Chapter 1

I woke before dawn, my eyes opening to darkness. Sleep had been fitful, dreams haunted by white dresses and promises. The Plaza Hotel suite felt too large, too empty, too silent. Today was supposed to be my wedding day.

My fingers found the small clay wedding dress on the vanity, its edges worn smooth from years of hopeful touches. Marcus had crafted it with his own hands for my fifteenth birthday, his blue eyes earnest as he'd placed it in my palm.

"This is my promise to you, Lily," he'd said. "One day, you'll wear a real one, and I'll be waiting at the altar."

I traced the delicate folds of the miniature gown, remembering how I'd believed him with every fiber of my being. How I'd held onto this promise through every betrayal, every indiscretion, every time he'd come home smelling of another woman's perfume.

The digital clock on the nightstand flipped to 5:30 AM. In twelve hours, I was supposed to become Mrs. Marcus Sterling.

I slid from the silk sheets, my bare feet silent against the plush carpet as I made my way to the walk-in closet. The door opened with a soft click, revealing my Vera Wang wedding gown suspended in solitary splendor. Its ivory fabric caught the faint light, thousands of hand-sewn crystals winking like stars. I reached out, my fingertips grazing the delicate lace bodice.

Eight months of fittings. Eight months of smiling through gossip about Marcus's latest indiscretions. Eight months of Mrs. Sterling's critical eyes measuring every inch of my body, every word from my mouth.

"You'll be perfect," she'd said yesterday at the rehearsal dinner, her voice cold with approval. "The Sterling name requires nothing less."

My phone buzzed on the nightstand, the screen illuminating the darkened room. My heart skipped—Marcus rarely texted this early. I hurried back, snatching up the device.

Five words glowed on the screen: "Not today. I can't. Sorry."

I read them again. And again. My fingers trembled as I tried to call him, but it went straight to voicemail. I dialed three more times before a new message appeared: "Please don't call. I'll explain later."

The room tilted. I sank onto the edge of the bed, clutching the phone like a lifeline. This couldn't be happening. Not after everything. Not after twelve years of loving him, of molding myself into the perfect Sterling bride.

The phone rang ten minutes later. I answered without speaking, my throat too tight for words.

"Lily." His voice was flat, emotionless. "I need to tell you something."

I pressed the phone harder against my ear, as if physical pressure could change the words I knew were coming.

"Victoria is pregnant. It happened at my bachelor party last month. I—I have to do the right thing."

Victoria Blackwood. His college girlfriend. The one he'd sworn meant nothing.

"The right thing," I repeated, my voice a whisper.

"I'm moving in with her today. I can't marry you, not now. Maybe someday, after the baby—"

I hung up. The phone slipped from my fingers, bouncing on the carpet.

Victoria was pregnant. Marcus was leaving. On our wedding day.

I stumbled to the suite's living area where boxes of wedding favors—crystal butterflies with the engraved date and our initials—were stacked neatly on the coffee table. Next to them lay torn ribbons, discarded by Marcus himself yesterday when he'd insisted on inspecting everything.

"Nothing can be less than perfect for my bride," he'd said, kissing my forehead before heading out to his bachelor party. His eighth.

A voicemail notification appeared on my phone. With numb fingers, I pressed play and set it on speaker.

"Lily, it's Marcus. I know this is difficult, but you have to understand. I need to take responsibility. Victoria needs me now. Mother agrees this is for the best. She'll be in touch about...arrangements. I'm sorry."

Arrangements. As if I were a business meeting to be rescheduled.

The morning light began to filter through the curtains, casting long shadows across the room. I sank onto the chaise longue, surrounded by the remnants of what should have been the happiest day of my life.

The clay wedding dress sat on the coffee table, its tiny form mocking me. Twelve years of devotion. Twelve years of believing in a promise made by a boy who never became the man I thought he would be.

I curled into myself as the first sob tore through my chest, the sound echoing in the empty suite that should have been filled with bridesmaids and champagne and laughter.

Instead, I was alone. Discarded. Replaced.

And somewhere across Manhattan, Victoria Blackwood was getting everything I had spent my life preparing for.
