Chapter 3

I found the cardigan on a Tuesday night.

Rhys was in the shower. I'd gone into his office to return a book I'd borrowed from his shelf months ago — back when I still did things like that, back when the marriage had props. The cardigan was draped over the back of his chair like it belonged there. Cream cashmere. A small embroidered H on the inside collar, the kind of monogram you have done at a boutique that knows your name.

I stood there for a moment. Just stood there.

Then I went to the kitchen, opened my laptop, and found the anonymous submission portal for Page Six's blind item column. I'd had the tab bookmarked for two weeks. I'd been waiting for the right moment, or maybe just waiting for the anger to get loud enough to drown out the fear.

I typed fast. I didn't let myself reread it.

I hit submit.

The item ran forty-eight hours later. *Which Manhattan CEO has been quietly funding a Columbia fellowship for a certain dark-haired graduate student — and funding considerably more than her research?* Three sentences. Clean. Enough.

Rhys read it at breakfast. I watched him go still over his phone the way water goes still before it freezes. The silence in the kitchen stretched out and out.

Then he looked up at me.

I had seen Rhys angry before. I had seen him cold, dismissive, contemptuous. I had never seen this. This was something underneath all of those things. Something that had been waiting.

"We're going upstate this weekend," he said. "To talk."

His voice was completely level.

"Okay," I said.

---

The Catskills property was three hours north. I'd never been. Rhys drove the whole way without music, one hand on the wheel, and I watched the city dissolve into highway and then into trees and didn't say a word.

The house was old stone and dark wood, set back from a gravel road with nothing visible in any direction. No neighbors. No lights from other properties. Just trees and the particular silence of a place that hadn't been used in a long time.

He carried my bag inside. He poured two fingers of Scotch.

"I have a call," he said. "Business. I'll be back by dinner."

He picked up his keys.

I looked at him. "Rhys —"

The door closed.

I heard the car start. I heard it go down the gravel drive. I heard it get quiet.

I checked my phone. No signal. Not one bar.

I found the landline in the kitchen. I picked it up. Nothing. Disconnected.

I sat down at the kitchen table and put both hands flat on the surface and breathed.

Dinner came and went. The sky went dark fast the way it does in October when there's no ambient light to slow it down. I found candles and lit them and went through every room, checking windows, checking locks. The main bedroom had a bolt. I slid it.

Around ten I heard them. Voices outside, low and unhurried, coming from the direction of the outbuilding. The crunch of gravel. A flashlight beam swinging past the window.

I didn't sleep.

I sat with my back against the bolted door and my knees pulled up and I thought about Rhys's face at the breakfast table. The calculation in it. The complete absence of remorse.

At first light I unlocked the bedroom, went to the kitchen, found my sneakers, and walked out the front door.

Three miles on an empty road. My breath fogging in the cold. My forearms bruised from where I'd shoved the outbuilding door shut against the weight of someone pushing from the other side.

The gas station attendant let me use the phone without asking questions. Maybe he saw my face.

Layne answered on the second ring.

"I'm in the Catskills," I said. "I need a car."

A pause. "Are you hurt?"

"Bruises. Nothing else."

Another pause, shorter. "I'm sending someone now. Go inside. Stay visible."

---

Layne photographed my forearms in his conference room. Both arms, multiple angles, timestamp visible. He filed it without asking my permission, which was the right call.

"You should go to a hotel," he said.

"No."

He looked at me over the legal pad.

"If I leave the penthouse now," I said, "before we're ready, he pulls every lever he has. My mother's doctor. The firm. All of it." I met his eyes. "I'm not leaving until I have something he can't walk back from."

Layne was quiet for a moment. Then he nodded once and wrote something down.

Rhys was already home when I got back. Jacket on. Glass of water on the counter. He looked up when I came in and said nothing. Not a word about the weekend. Not a word about the three miles or the gas station or the men outside the outbuilding in the dark.

He acted like it hadn't happened.

I set my bag down. I went to the kitchen. I started making dinner.

My hands were completely steady.

I was getting very good at this.
