Chapter 1

The text came at 9:47 p.m.

Mount Sinai Hospital. Emergency contact notification for Rhys Thompson. Room 4-C. Please come immediately.

I read it three times standing in the kitchen, still in my apron. I'd been reheating soup. I turned off the stove, grabbed my coat, and ran.

The whole cab ride uptown I told myself it was a car accident. Maybe something at the office. Rhys worked late on Tuesdays. My hands were in my lap, fingers pressed together, and I kept thinking about the last thing I'd said to him that morning — something about dry cleaning — and how stupid it would be if that was the last thing.

I loved him. That's the part that's hardest to explain now. I genuinely, completely loved him.

Mount Sinai's fourth floor smelled like antiseptic and recycled air. A nurse pointed me toward Room 4-C without looking up from her screen. I pushed through the door.

Rhys was fine.

He was sitting in a chair beside the hospital bed, jacket off, sleeves rolled to the elbow. He looked healthy. He looked calm. He was holding the hand of a young woman I had never seen before.

She was maybe twenty-four. Dark hair loose around her shoulders. A white bandage wrapped her left wrist. She had been crying — her face still carried it, that particular rawness — but she was looking up at Rhys the way you look at someone who is your entire world.

Rhys heard the door. He turned.

And there it was.

Not guilt. Not panic. Not even the decency of surprise. Just a cold, brief calculation behind his eyes — the look of a man running numbers, deciding how to handle a variable that had arrived ahead of schedule.

Five years. Five years of a sexless marriage I had accepted because he told me, with such careful regret, that he had a condition. A severe reaction. Physical intimacy with women triggered something neurological, something the doctors couldn't fully explain. I had researched it. I had found forums. I had told myself that love was bigger than that, that what we had was rare and worth protecting.

I stood in the doorway of Room 4-C and understood, in the span of three seconds, that I had been an absolute fool.

The woman on the bed — Harlow Gibson, I would learn her name later, would learn everything later — looked between us. Her expression shifted. Something moved across her face that wasn't quite guilt either. It was closer to satisfaction.

I turned and walked back into the hallway.

Rhys followed. Of course he did.

"Clare." His voice was quiet. That particular quiet he used when he wanted me to understand that volume was beneath him.

I turned around. "Who is she."

He didn't hesitate. "Her name is Harlow. She's been in my life for three years."

Three years. I counted backward automatically. Three years ago I had planned our anniversary dinner for two weeks. He'd come home late and said he was sorry and I had said it was fine.

"I want a divorce," I said.

Something almost like amusement moved across his face. "That's not going to happen."

"Rhys —"

"Russell and Associates." He said it the way you'd cite a clause in a contract. "I hold controlling interest. Your father's firm. Your mother's name on the door." He paused. "Martha's access to Kessler runs through a Thompson Foundation grant. The one I personally authorized last year."

Dr. Kessler. My mother's cardiologist. The one who had kept her stable for four years.

I felt the floor shift.

"If you file," Rhys said, "I make two phone calls. The firm goes into receivership within the week. The grant gets pulled by Friday." He straightened his cuffs. "This doesn't have to be complicated, Clare. Go home. We'll talk in the morning."

He went back into the room. The door swung shut behind him.

I stood in the fluorescent hallway of Mount Sinai for a long moment. My coat was still buttoned. I had left the house so fast I'd forgotten my good bag.

Then I walked out.

Two blocks from the hospital I found a pay phone. I didn't think about it. My hands just knew.

Layne Marshall picked up on the first ring.

"It's Clare," I said. "I need your help."

"Come to the office," he said. "Right now. I'll be there."

His conference room was all glass and low light. He made coffee without asking and set it in front of me and sat down and looked at me and waited. He didn't say I'm sorry. He didn't say I can't believe it. He just waited, with the patience of someone who understood that what I needed first was to be heard without interruption.

So I told him everything.

By the time I finished, the coffee was cold and Layne had filled half a legal pad.

"You can't file yet," he said. "Not until we build something he can't dismantle in seventy-two hours." He met my eyes. "You have to go back."

I looked at the legal pad. At his careful handwriting. At the Manhattan skyline going dark behind the glass.

"How long," I said.

"Weeks. Maybe more."

I nodded.

I took a cab to the Upper East Side. Let myself into the penthouse. Rhys was in the bedroom, the door closed.

I stood in the kitchen and looked at the centerpiece I had arranged for Thanksgiving. Alone. While he was with her.

I didn't cry.

I got my sketchbook from my bag and sat down at the kitchen table and started drawing the floor plan of the apartment. Every room. Every exit. Every corner that had ever felt like mine.

I noted them all.

I had work to do.
