Chapter 2

The pregnancy report arrived in a plain manila envelope, indistinguishable from any other piece of medical correspondence. Sophia had sourced it through a contact she declined to name, and the document itself was a masterpiece of clinical detail — gestational age, hCG levels, the attending physician's signature rendered in a precise, unhurried hand. I held it under the kitchen light for a long moment, studying the letterhead, the watermark, the faint texture of the paper stock.

Perfect.

I spent the afternoon preparing dinner. Not ordering in, not reheating — cooking, the way I used to on the rare evenings when the apartment felt like a home rather than a stage set. Braised short ribs, the kind that required three hours and genuine attention. The smell of red wine and rosemary filled every room. I set the table with the good china, lit the candles, and changed into the cream silk blouse Roger had always said made me look soft.

When he walked through the door at seven-fifteen, briefcase in hand, he stopped in the foyer and blinked.

"You cooked?"

"Sit down," I said, carrying the serving dish to the table. "I have something to tell you."

I waited until he had poured his wine. Until he had taken his first bite and settled into the chair with the particular looseness of a man who believes he is safe. Then I slid the envelope across the white linen.

He looked at me. He looked at the envelope. He pulled out the report.

I watched his face the way you watch a slow-motion film — frame by frame, nothing missed. The furrow of confusion as he scanned the header. The moment his eyes found the words *intrauterine pregnancy, approximately seven weeks gestational age*. The furrow dissolving. His mouth opening slightly. The color rising in his neck, his jaw, his eyes going glassy with something I had not seen in years.

"Naomi." His voice cracked on the second syllable. "Is this — are you —"

"Seven weeks," I said.

He was out of his chair before I finished the sentence. He came around the table and pulled me to my feet and held me with a desperation that would have broken my heart six days ago. His arms were shaking. Roger Davis, who had not cried at his own father's funeral, was crying at my kitchen table.

"A baby," he kept saying, his face pressed into my hair. "We're having a baby."

I let him hold me. I kept my eyes open.

---

The next morning, I came downstairs in my robe to find him already at the breakfast table, still wearing the expression of a man who had won something. He was on his second cup of coffee, scrolling his phone with the loose, unhurried energy of someone whose world had just rearranged itself into something better.

I set a plate of toast in front of him and sat down across from him with a folder.

"I spoke to our financial advisor last night," I said, opening it. "With the baby coming, we need to restructure the property assets. Standard estate planning — it protects the penthouse from any liability exposure before the birth."

He looked up from his phone. "Liability exposure?"

"If anything happened to either of us before the paperwork was in order, the estate goes to probate. It could take years." I slid the authorization form across the table. "This just formalizes the asset structure. Routine."

He picked it up. I watched his eyes move across the page — not reading, scanning, the way a man reads something he has already decided to sign. He was still inside last night's happiness. The candlelight was still in his eyes.

"Where do I sign?"

I pointed to the line.

He signed.

I folded the document back into the folder, stood up, and refilled his coffee.

---

Three days later, I met Kori at the kind of café she had always wanted to be seen in — exposed brick, a sixteen-dollar matcha, a clientele that looked like it belonged in a magazine. She arrived seven minutes late, which was her way of arriving on time, and she was wearing the camel coat I had complimented once, two winters ago. She remembered everything I had ever said to her. I had counted on that.

"I've been thinking about you," I said, once she had settled in and wrapped both hands around her cup. "I have an opportunity I want to offer you first."

Her eyes sharpened beneath the performance of casual interest.

"I'm forming a new LLC," I said. "A holding structure for some investment properties. I need a legal representative — someone I trust, someone sharp enough to handle the administrative side." I paused. "There's a fifty-thousand-dollar fee for taking on the role."

The number landed exactly as I knew it would. Something flickered across her face — hunger, quickly smoothed back into composure.

"What would I actually have to do?"

"Sign the formation documents. Attend one or two meetings a year. The company runs itself." I smiled at her across the table. "You'd be doing me a favor, honestly. I need someone I can rely on."

She believed every word. Of course she did. She had spent months convincing herself she was the smartest person in any room I occupied.

She signed the paperwork before her matcha was finished.

I walked her to the door, kissed her cheek, and told her I'd be in touch.

Outside, the November air was sharp and clean. I buttoned my coat, tucked the signed documents into my bag, and hailed a cab heading uptown.

The trap had three walls now.

I was already building the fourth.
