Chapter 2

I left the apartment exactly as it was. The anniversary dinner cooling on the Wedgwood china, the vintage cufflinks waiting in their velvet box, and the laptop sitting precisely where Ryker had left it. I walked out with nothing but my purse. By midnight, I was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the presidential suite at the Grand Herrera Hotel. The Los Angeles skyline stretched out below me, a glittering grid of power, consequence, and secrets.

Room service had delivered exactly what I asked for. I took a sip of my coffee—black, bitter, scalding. The heat burned down my throat, a sharp, grounding sensation that chased away the lingering ghost of the devoted wife I had been just hours ago.

I sat at the suite’s mahogany desk, opening my encrypted tablet. My knuckles didn't whiten. My hands didn't shake. The woman who had erased herself for three years was gone, replaced by the Herrera heiress. With methodical precision, my fingers flew across the glass screen.

*Revoke access. Terminate transfer. Close account.*

I systematically dismantled the invisible financial scaffolding that held the Crawford family together. Ryker’s twenty-thousand-dollar monthly “bonus”? Gone. Wade’s covert debt-relief pipeline? Severed. Brinley’s supplemental black card? Canceled. I watched the balances drop to zero, one by one. I didn't shed a single tear. The only sound in the cavernous suite was the soft, rhythmic tapping of my nails against the screen, each click a severed artery in the Crawfords' parasitic lifeline.

The fallout began at 10:14 the next morning.

I was reviewing legal documents when my phone screen lit up with a sequence of automated fraud alerts from my private bank. *Attempted transaction: $82,500. EuroCar Luxury Motors. Status: Declined.*

I pictured Brinley sitting in the plush leather chair of a Beverly Hills dealership, her entitlement curdling into public outrage as the finance manager handed the plastic back to her with a sympathetic frown. A minute later, my filtered call log began to populate. Ryker. Once, twice, five times in rapid succession. Panic was setting in. He was frantically trying to reach the docile, naive woman who always smoothed over the rough edges of his life. But that number was dead, and so was she.

At noon, the receptionist at the modest downtown subsidiary where I pretended to be a mid-level corporate analyst sent an urgent security message: *Ms. Herrera, there’s a disturbance in the lobby. Two people demanding to see you.*

I picked up the thick, leather-bound folder I had requested from my wealth manager that morning. It was heavy. Three years of willful blindness weighed more than I had anticipated.

When I stepped out of the elevator into the sunlit atrium, the shouting echoed off the marble floors.

"She works here! Tell her to get down here right now!" Brinley was shrieking, her designer handbag clutched like a weapon. Beside her, Wade paced, his chest puffed with the blustering authority of a patriarch whose gambling debts I had secretly erased for years.

"Brinley. Wade," I said.

My voice wasn't loud, but the absolute zero in my tone cut through the cavernous room. They spun around.

"Adaline!" Brinley marched toward me, her face flushed, her jaw tight with indignant rage. "What is wrong with your bank? I was literally signing the papers for the Range Rover, and the card declined! Do you have any idea how humiliating that was? Ryker isn't answering, and you—"

I didn't look at her. I looked at Wade. His eyes were narrowed, ready to deliver one of his lectures on family loyalty and financial responsibility—a rich irony I had stomached for far too long.

"Adaline, this is unacceptable," Wade barked, stepping into my personal space, trying to use his height to cast a shadow over me. "You fix whatever glitch this is, immediately. Family doesn't leave family hanging at a dealership."

I held his gaze. The heat in my chest didn't rise to my face; it concentrated into a diamond-hard point behind my ribs. I lifted the heavy, bound ledger and pressed it flat against Wade's chest. Reflexively, his hands came up to grasp it.

"What is this?" he muttered, glancing down at the embossed cover.

"That," I said, my voice dropping to a smooth, lethal cadence, "is an itemized record of your existence for the past thirty-six months. Every roulette debt, every missed mortgage payment, every luxury car lease."

Wade’s face lost its color, the mottled red of his cheeks draining into a sickly gray. He flipped open the first page. His eyes darted over the highlighted bank transfers, his breathing turning shallow.

"Ryker's allowance is terminated," I continued, the words falling like the strike of a gavel. "The supplemental cards are deactivated. The Crawford family charity is officially closed."

"You can't do this!" Brinley snapped, her voice pitching into a shrill whine. "That's our money! Ryker said—"

"Ryker owns nothing," I interrupted, shifting my gaze to her. The silence in the lobby thickened. Security guards and onlookers had stopped pretending not to listen. "And neither do you."

Wade's hands began to tremble, the ledger suddenly looking too heavy for him to hold. A bead of sweat formed at his temple. "Adaline... be reasonable. We're your family."

"We were never family, Wade. I was just your ATM." I stepped back, adjusting the cuff of my blazer. The air around me felt lighter, cleaner. "Do not come to my workplace again. The next time you see me, it will be through my lawyers."

I turned on my heel and walked back to the elevator. Behind me, the heavy thud of the ledger hitting the marble floor echoed through the atrium, followed by the jagged, desperate sound of Wade calling my name. I didn't look back. The steel doors slid shut, sealing them in the ruin of their own making.
