Chapter 5

The rumors reached me in pieces.

First, a healer from the Ironridge Pack mentioned it during a consult. Her Alpha had pulled out of a trade agreement with Silvercrest. Something about uncertain futures. She said it carefully, watching my face for a reaction I did not give.

Then Mariana called. "They're saying the bloodline is cursed. Rhodes can't produce an heir. Giuliana's been to every healer between here and the northern territories, and she's still not pregnant."

I was in the lab, distilling wolfsbane extract for a sedative compound. I did not look up from the beaker.

"That's unfortunate," I said.

"Unfortunate?" Mariana's voice sharpened. "Taylor, they're falling apart. Edmund's holding emergency council sessions. Two allied Alphas have already backed out of their agreements. This is—"

"Not my concern."

She was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "You sound like you expected this."

I adjusted the burner flame. The liquid inside the beaker turned from pale green to clear. Precise. Controlled.

"I should go," I said. "I have patients waiting."

I hung up before she could argue.

But the whispers kept coming. A Beta visiting the Institute for a shoulder injury mentioned that Silvercrest's Alpha seemed "off" during the last pack run. His aura had flickered. Just for a moment. But wolves notice things like that.

A young healer from a neighboring pack asked if I had heard about the Lycan King's court sending formal inquiries to the major packs. Succession viability documentation. Required within sixty days.

"Silvercrest's scrambling," she said. "They've got one heir who's still a pup, and their Alpha can't seem to mark properly. The court's watching them."

I filed the information away and said nothing.

At night, after Lochlan fell asleep, I sat at my desk and opened the locked drawer. The leather folder sat exactly where I had left it. I did not take it out. I just looked at it.

Rhodes' diagnosis. The one I had buried three years ago. The one that said his wolf's reproductive and marking viability was deteriorating and would continue to deteriorate without intervention.

I had been that intervention. For three years, I had bled my own healing energy into him, session after session, stabilizing what should have collapsed long before Giuliana ever touched him.

Now there was no intervention. Just a dying wolf and a mate who could not conceive and a pack that was finally, slowly, beginning to understand what I had known all along.

I closed the drawer. I pressed two fingers to my wrist. Pulse. Steady. Mine.

I did not smile. But I did not need to.

***

The formal inquiry from the Lycan King's court arrived at Silvercrest on a Tuesday morning in late autumn.

I know because Edmund called me.

I was in my office reviewing a diagnostic report when my phone rang. I saw the Silvercrest prefix and almost declined. Then I thought about Lochlan and answered.

"Ms. Wright." Edmund's voice was clipped. Formal. He had never called me Taylor. Not even when I was his son's Luna. "I need to discuss a matter concerning Lochlan's heritage documentation."

"Lochlan's documentation is current and filed with the Lycan court," I said. "If you need copies, contact my attorney."

"That's not—" He stopped. I heard him take a breath. "The court has requested succession viability proof from Silvercrest. We need to demonstrate a clear line of inheritance. Lochlan is part of that line."

"Lochlan is documented as Rhodes' heir. That should be sufficient."

"It's not." His voice hardened. "The court wants proof that the Alpha bloodline can produce additional heirs. They want—"

"They want proof that Rhodes' wolf is viable," I said quietly. "And you can't give them that."

Silence.

I could hear him breathing on the other end of the line. I could picture him in his study, surrounded by leather and mahogany, the weight of a crumbling legacy pressing down on shoulders that had never had to carry doubt before.

"We need a formal assessment," he said finally. "From a neutral healer. Someone the court will accept."

"Then hire one."

"We tried. Rhodes refuses to let any Silvercrest healer document his condition. He says—" Edmund stopped again. "He says he'll handle it himself."

I said nothing. I waited.

"Ms. Wright." His voice dropped. Not softer. Just quieter. "If there's anything you know. Anything that could help us respond to the court. I'm asking."

I thought about the diagnosis locked in my desk. I thought about the three years I had spent holding Rhodes' wolf together while Edmund and his council looked down on my "common healer background" and celebrated Giuliana's arrival like a coronation.

I thought about the night Rhodes used his Alpha tone to silence an entire hall because his chosen mate had humiliated me and he wanted to make sure no one interrupted.

"I'm sorry," I said. "I can't help you."

I hung up.

I sat at my desk for a long time after that. I did not move. I just sat there and let the silence settle.

Then I opened my calendar and noted the sixty-day deadline the court had given Silvercrest.

I did not know what Rhodes would do. But I knew he was running out of time. And I knew, with absolute certainty, that eventually he would come to me.

I just had to wait.

***

He arrived on a Thursday afternoon, three weeks before Silvercrest's court deadline.

I was in my office reviewing a research proposal when my assistant knocked.

"Director Wright, there's someone here to see you. He says it's urgent. He wouldn't give his name."

I looked up. My assistant's scent carried tension. Whoever was in the waiting room had made her uncomfortable.

"Send him in," I said.

She hesitated. Then she nodded and stepped back.

The door opened.

Rhodes walked into my office.

He was alone. No Beta. No escort. He wore a dark coat and civilian clothes. No pack insignia. He looked like he had driven here directly, without stopping, without telling anyone where he was going.

He stopped three feet inside the door.

I did not stand. I did not speak. I just looked at him.

He looked back.

For three full seconds, neither of us moved.

Then his eyes shifted. He saw the credentials on the wall behind me. The Lycan King's council seal. The Director's certificate. The commendation for my published research on Aura Decay Syndrome.

His jaw tightened.

I folded my hands on top of my desk and waited.

"Taylor," he said finally. His voice was rough. Like he had not used it much on the drive here. "I need your help."

I did not blink.

"Close the door," I said.

He turned. He closed it. The lock clicked into place.

Then he turned back, and I saw it. The thing I had been waiting to see for two years.

His aura flickered. Just for a second. Just at the edges. But I saw it.

His wolf was failing. And he knew it.

"Sit down, Alpha Silvercrest," I said quietly. "Let's talk."
