Chapter 2

The Silvercrest Elder Council Chamber smelled like old wood and older wolves. Seven days since the rejection. Seven days since I walked out of that ceremonial hall with my son in my arms and nothing else.

I sat at the respondent's table with my hands folded on top of a single leather folder. No Beta. No pack lawyers. Just me and the truth I had buried for three years, waiting in my veins like a blade I hadn't needed yet.

Across the aisle, Rhodes had brought an army.

His Beta, Marcus, sat to his right in formal council blacks. Two pack lawyers flanked his left, their briefcases open, documents stacked in neat piles that were meant to look like preparation but smelled like intimidation. Rhodes himself sat with his shoulders back, his jaw set, his Alpha aura filling the room the way it always did — the way I had made sure it always could.

The seven Elders sat in their high-backed chairs at the head of the chamber. Cassius Thorne, the senior Elder, watched me with the careful neutrality of a man who had spent sixty years learning when to speak and when to let silence do the work. Edmund Silvercrest, Rhodes' father, sat three seats down with his mouth pressed into a thin, hard line.

Cassius cleared his throat. "We convene to mediate the custody arrangement of Lochlan Silvercrest, sole heir of the Silvercrest Alpha line, following the formal rejection and severance of the mate bond between Alpha Rhodes Silvercrest and former Luna Taylor Wright."

Former Luna. The words landed like a stone in still water.

"The respondent has claimed full custody," Cassius continued. "The petitioner contests."

One of the pack lawyers stood. His name was something forgettable. His voice was not.

"Honored Elders, the issue before this council is not complicated. Lochlan Silvercrest is the sole Alpha heir of this pack. Under succession law, the heir belongs to the pack — not to a rejected, title-stripped she-wolf with no remaining pack standing." He smiled thinly at me. "Ms. Wright's... emotional attachment to the child is understandable. But pack law is clear. The Alpha heir remains with the Alpha."

I did not move. I did not speak. I let him finish.

The second lawyer stood. She was sharper. "Furthermore, we have documented concerns regarding Ms. Wright's conduct during her tenure as Luna. Specifically, allegations of medical ethics violations during her management of the pack infirmary."

She slid a folder across the table toward the Elders. Cassius opened it. His expression did not change, but I saw the faint shift in his posture — the tightening that meant he was reading something uglier than he had expected.

"These allegations," the lawyer continued, "suggest Ms. Wright manipulated medical records, administered unauthorized treatments, and violated Lycan Healer protocols on multiple occasions. We have testimony from three pack members willing to corroborate."

Fabricated. Every word of it. I knew it. They knew I knew it. The Elders knew it too, but pack law did not care about truth if the lie was witnessed loudly enough.

Cassius looked at me. "Ms. Wright, do you wish to respond?"

I opened my mouth.

Rhodes leaned forward. When he spoke, he spoke in the Alpha tone. Not the conversational version. The command version. The one that made wolves' spines lock without permission.

"Elder Thorne, with respect, the respondent's conduct is not relevant to this mediation. What is relevant is the law. And the law states that the Alpha heir remains with the Alpha bloodline. My son stays with me."

Cassius' mouth closed. Not because he chose to stop speaking. Because his wolf would not let him continue.

I watched it happen. I watched a sixty-year-old Elder, a wolf who had served this pack for longer than I had been alive, forced into silence by the tone of a man whose wolf I had been holding together with my own blood for three years.

My hand went to my wrist. Pulse. Steady. Mine.

The first lawyer smiled. "Unless the respondent has grounds to contest the succession law framework itself, this mediation is concluded."

Edmund Silvercrest nodded. Two other Elders shifted in their seats. I could feel the room closing.

I pulled my phone from my pocket. I typed two words and a location. I hit send.

Then I folded my hands on top of the leather folder and waited.

Mariana arrived at the next session three days later.

She did not sit in the gallery. She did not sit at my table. She walked directly to the center of the council floor and set a single document on the desk in front of Cassius Thorne.

It bore the Ironridge Pack's official seal. Midnight blue wax. Unbroken.

Cassius lifted it carefully. He read in silence. His face did not move, but his scent shifted — surprise, then something sharper. Concern.

Rhodes leaned toward Marcus. "What is that?"

Mariana turned to face him. She did not smile. "A formal inter-pack declaration. Any continued legal or professional assault on Chief Healer Taylor Wright's credentials will be treated by the Ironridge Pack as a direct provocation against our alliance standing."

The room went very still.

"You're bluffing," the first lawyer said.

Mariana looked at him the way Gammas look at subordinates who have spoken out of turn. "Try me."

Cassius set the document down. He looked at Edmund. He looked at the other Elders. Then he looked at Rhodes.

"The misconduct allegations are withdrawn," he said quietly.

The second lawyer opened her mouth. Cassius raised one hand.

"Withdrawn," he repeated. "Permanently."

Rhodes' jaw tightened. His scent spiked — fury, barely leashed. But he did not argue. Even an Alpha does not pick a fight with an allied pack over a custody dispute. Not unless he wants war.

Cassius turned to me. "Ms. Wright, do you maintain your claim for full custody of Lochlan Silvercrest?"

"I do."

"And you understand that this claim, if granted, severs all parental rights held by Alpha Silvercrest under pack law?"

"I understand."

Cassius nodded slowly. He looked at Rhodes. "Do you accept this arrangement?"

Rhodes did not answer immediately. His hands were flat on the table. His breathing was controlled, but I could see the muscle working in his jaw.

"Yes," he said finally. The word came out rough.

"Then this council recognizes the transfer of full custody to Taylor Wright, formalized by blood oath and witnessed by this body." Cassius gestured to the ceremonial blade on the table between us. "Approach."

I stood. I walked to the center of the floor. I took the blade and drew it across my palm — one clean line, no hesitation. The blood welled dark and fast.

I spoke the words of the oath. Every syllable clear. Every syllable binding.

When I finished, Cassius pressed his thumb to the blood on my palm and then to the parchment that would be filed with the Lycan King's court.

"It is done," he said.

I turned and walked back to my table. Mariana was already standing. We left the council chamber together, and neither of us said a word until we were outside in the cold air.

Then Mariana looked at me. "You okay?"

I pressed two fingers to my wrist. Pulse. Still mine.

"I'm okay," I said.

She nodded. She did not ask me to celebrate. She knew better.

We walked to my car in silence, and I thought about my son asleep in the temporary quarters I had rented two miles outside Silvercrest's borders. I thought about the folder still sitting on the council table, unopened.

I thought about the diagnosis inside it that Rhodes still did not know I had.
