Chapter 1

Three years ago, I pulled off my earrings, gathered my wrinkled dress off a luxury hotel carpet, and slipped out before the sun cracked the skyline.

I never gave him my real name. I wiped my digital trail clean, blocked every burner number that texted me over the next forty-eight hours, and boarded a one-way flight across the world. One reckless, blistering night with a stranger was supposed to stay buried in another timezone.

Now, my heels touched domestic soil again, ready to restart my design career from scratch.

I helped a handsome man on the plane and he said he wanted to buy me dinner to thank me.

Two hours later, we sat across from each other in the secluded booth of an ultra-exclusive dining room downtown. Dark mahogany walls, muted amber lighting, and crystal glassware made the space feel entirely shielded from the street noise below.

Jasper was an easy conversationalist. He talked about his gap year in Europe, his family’s relentless pressure for him to take over their charitable trust, and his complete lack of interest in corporate politics.

"So your family runs everything?" I asked, cutting a piece of roasted duck.

"Pretty much," Jasper sighed, swirling his wine. "Well, my older brother runs everything. I just try to dodge his radar so he doesn't force me into a bespoke suit every Monday."

"Sounds exhausting."

"You have no idea. He treats life like a hostile takeover." Jasper checked his phone, a grin spreading across his mouth. "Speaking of the devil. He just texted. He’s downstairs with his date. Do you mind if they crash our table for drinks? If it’s weird, I can tell him to bug off."

I smiled, dabbing a cloth napkin against my lip. "Jasper, it’s your dinner. I don't mind at all."

"Great. You'll love Chloe, she's gorgeous and sweet. My brother... well, just ignore him if he acts like a stone wall." Jasper stood up and cracked the heavy wood-paneled door open. "Down here, Rook!"

My hand froze against the stem of my water glass.

*Rook?*

The door swung fully open.

A tall man stepped over the threshold, filling the frame instantly. Broad shoulders packed inside a charcoal Italian cut suit, crisp white collar open at the throat, pitch-black hair cut ruthlessly short.

Rook Thorne.

The air vanished from my lungs in an instant. The room shrank into a tunnel of blinding panic.

Clinging to his forearm was a stunning brunette in a backless emerald silk gown. She laughed at something he murmured, leaning her cheek against his shoulder with the polished ease of someone who owned that spot beside him.

"You're late," Jasper complained, stepping back to let them inside. "We’re already halfway through the entrees."

"Traffic on the bridge was backed up three miles," the woman—Chloe—replied in a melodic, honeyed voice. She kissed Jasper’s cheek before turning her attention to the rest of the room. "And who is this?"

Rook didn’t look at Jasper.

He didn’t look at Chloe.

His dark, slate-gray eyes cut straight across the table, pinning me where I sat.

My heart slammed against my ribs like a caged animal. My palms went slick. Every instinct I possessed screamed at me to jump up and run, but my limbs had turned to lead.

*Three years.*

Three years of running, of hiding across an ocean, of pretending that night never happened. And now here he was, standing six feet away, holding another woman against his side while his younger brother grinned like an eager puppy.

"Rook, Chloe, this is Wren," Jasper announced brightly, pulling out two chairs. "She saved my life on the flight from Tokyo today. Wren, this is my brother, Rook Thorne."

The name hung in the air, heavy and sharp.

Rook didn’t move. His jaw tightened by a fraction of an inch, the muscle leaping under taut skin. His stare was cold, measuring, stripping away every ounce of composure I was trying to fake.

"Wren," Rook repeated. The low gravel of his voice scraped down my spine, waking up ghosts I thought I’d buried three thousand miles away.

Chloe slid into the seat beside him, smoothing her gown. "It's so lovely to meet you, Wren. Jasper usually only complains about flight attendants, so you must have worked magic on him."

"Just some painkillers and water," I said. My voice sounded thin to my own ears, brittle as dried leaves. I forced my chin up, meeting Rook's gaze head-on. "Nothing extraordinary."

"You're being modest," Jasper laughed, flagging down a waiter. "Rook, what are you drinking? Scotch?"

"Scotch. Neat," Rook said, his voice dropping an octave.

His eyes never left my face. They drifted slowly down to the pulse jumping wildly at the base of my throat, then back up to my eyes. A tiny, almost imperceptible tilt appeared at the corner of his lips—mocking, lethal, and razor-sharp.

"Have we met before, Wren?" Rook asked smoothly.

The question hit the center of the table like an unpinned grenade.

Chloe blinked, looking between us with mild curiosity. Jasper paused with his hand raised toward the waiter.

I dug my fingernails deep into the meat of my palms beneath the linen tablecloth, fighting the tremor in my chest.

"No," I lied, keeping my tone as flat as stone. "I'm certain we haven't."

Rook leaned back against his chair, resting an arm on the table, totally unfazed.

"Strange," he murmured, his gaze darkening until it felt like a physical touch on my skin. "You look remarkably familiar."

My breath locked behind my teeth.

The reckless, chaotic fire I had spent three years fleeing from hadn't stayed in that hotel room.

It had just tracked me down and sat directly across from me.
