Chapter 3

The Williams family estate loomed before me, its windows glowing amber against the gray Seattle sky. I clutched my purse containing the forged marriage documents, my heart hammering against my ribs. Three days had passed since I'd seen Ryan and Victoria at the hospital, and the betrayal still felt like an open wound.

I hesitated at the front door, my finger hovering over the doorbell. For twenty-six years, I'd walked into this house feeling like an outsider. Today, I finally understood why.

The housekeeper answered, her eyes widening slightly at my unannounced arrival. 'Miss Sarah! We weren't expecting you for Thanksgiving until tomorrow.'

'Change of plans,' I said, stepping past her into the marble foyer where family portraits lined the walls. My eyes caught on one from my sixteenth birthday—me standing awkwardly apart while Victoria beamed in the center, Mrs. Williams' arm draped possessively around her shoulder.

Voices drifted from the dining room—the distinctive timbre of Mrs. Williams giving instructions about tomorrow's dinner, Victoria's melodic laugh in response. I moved toward them, each step fueled by three days of rage and revelation.

They fell silent when I appeared in the doorway. Victoria's hand flew instinctively to her stomach—that small protective gesture igniting fresh fury within me.

'Sarah!' Mrs. Williams recovered first, her smile not reaching her eyes. 'What a surprise. We weren't expecting you until—'

'Until you'd had time to rehearse your lies?' I interrupted, my voice steadier than I felt.

Victoria shifted uncomfortably, exchanging a glance with her mother. The dining room suddenly felt suffocating—crystal chandelier, polished silver, and generations of Williams family portraits watching our confrontation unfold.

'I don't know what you're talking about,' Victoria said, but her fingers twisted nervously in her cashmere sweater.

I pulled out the chair across from her, the scrape against hardwood floor cutting through the tension. 'How long, Victoria?' I asked, laying my purse on the table. 'How long have you been sleeping with my husband?'

Her face paled, then flushed. 'Ryan and I—'

'Ryan and you,' I echoed, leaning forward. 'My husband and my sister. How could you betray me like this?'

Victoria's chin lifted defiantly. 'He was never meant to be yours.'

'What is that supposed to mean?'

'It means,' Mrs. Williams interjected coldly, 'that you've taken enough from this family.'

I turned to her, this woman who had raised me with such calculated distance. 'Taken? What exactly have I taken?'

'Everything!' Mrs. Williams' voice echoed off the wood-paneled walls. 'Everything that should have been Victoria's!'

Mr. Williams appeared in the doorway, his expression guarded. 'Eleanor, perhaps this isn't the time—'

'No, Richard. She needs to hear this.' Mrs. Williams' eyes burned with decades of hatred I'd always sensed but never understood. 'You've been nothing but a burden, a constant reminder of what was stolen from us.'

I gripped the edge of the table. 'I never stole anything from you. You adopted me, remember?'

A terrible smile twisted Mrs. Williams' face. 'Adopted. Is that what you think happened?'

The room seemed to tilt beneath me. 'What are you talking about?'

Mrs. Williams moved toward me with predatory grace. 'You were never meant to be part of this family. You were a mistake we've been paying for your entire worthless life.'

'Mother,' Victoria whispered, but there was no stopping the venom now.

'Ryan was supposed to marry Victoria. That was always the plan, until you seduced him with your pathetic neediness.'

I stood so quickly my chair toppled backward. 'You're lying. Ryan loved me.'

'Ryan pitied you,' Mrs. Williams spat. 'Just like we all did.'

Something inside me snapped. 'Is that why you forged my signature on my marriage certificate? Out of pity?'

Shock flashed across her face—the first genuine reaction I'd seen.

'That's right,' I continued, pulling the documents from my purse. 'I found these. My entire marriage was a fraud designed to protect Ryan and leave me with nothing.'

Mrs. Williams recovered quickly, her lips curving into a cruel smile. 'You were never worthy of the Sterling name.'

'And I was never worthy of being a Williams either, was I?' I demanded, my voice rising. 'Why? What did I ever do to make you hate me so much?'

The slap came without warning—a sharp crack across my face that sent me staggering backward. Mrs. Williams stood over me, hand still raised, decades of hatred distorting her features.

'You steal what's rightfully ours,' she hissed. 'You always have.'

The dining room fell silent, family members frozen in tableau around us. My cheek burned where her ring had cut my skin. In that moment, looking into her eyes, I finally saw the truth: I had never been a daughter to this woman. I had been a prisoner.
