Chapter 1

The auditorium buzzed with excitement as proud parents clutched bouquets and cameras, ready to capture their children's elementary school graduation. I sat in the front row, smoothing the invisible wrinkles from my cream-colored dress, a smile fixed on my face as I watched Emma on stage. My daughter stood tall among her classmates, her eyes scanning the crowd until they found mine. The smile that bloomed across her face made my heart swell.

"She looks beautiful up there," I whispered, turning to Brandon beside me.

My husband of eight years nodded absently, his attention already drifting to his phone. I placed my hand over his, a gesture that had become routine—my silent plea for connection that he tolerated rather than welcomed.

"The Henderson account looks promising," he murmured, his thumb scrolling through emails. "Three million could be just the beginning."

"Brandon," I said softly. "It's Emma's graduation."

He slipped his phone away with a practiced smile that never quite reached his eyes. "Of course, Sarah. I'm here."

But he wasn't. Not really. Not for eight years. I'd become an expert at ignoring the hollow space where love should have been, focusing instead on creating the perfect home, the perfect family image that Brandon craved. I'd buried the girl I once was—scarred and scorned—beneath layers of composure and compliance.

The principal was midway through his speech when the auditorium doors opened. Even before I turned, I felt Brandon tense beside me. Some primal instinct made my stomach clench as I followed his gaze.

Victoria Sterling stood in the doorway, elegant in a designer suit that probably cost more than most parents' monthly salaries. Beside her stood a girl about Emma's age, with Victoria's perfect features and cold, appraising eyes. I hadn't seen Victoria in person since college, but I would recognize her anywhere—the woman who had orchestrated my humiliation, who had called me "freak" to my scarred face, who had taken Brandon from me once before.

The principal paused, acknowledging the late arrival with a nod toward the empty VIP seats in the center section. Victoria's lips curved into a smile that was both apology and triumph.

I felt Brandon's hand slip from mine.

"I should say hello," he said, already rising. "Business courtesy."

"Brandon," I whispered urgently. "Emma is about to receive her award. She's been practicing her speech for weeks."

He hesitated for just a moment, his eyes darting to the stage where our daughter now watched us with confusion clouding her face. Then he looked back at Victoria, who raised a perfectly manicured hand in subtle beckoning.

"I'll just be a minute," he promised.

But I knew. In that moment, I knew with crushing certainty that I had lost him—or rather, that I had never truly had him. I watched as he made his way across the auditorium, sliding into the seat beside Victoria. I watched as he leaned close to her, their heads tilted together in intimate conversation. I watched as he took the hand of Victoria's daughter, giving her the proud smile that should have been reserved for Emma.

On stage, Emma's small shoulders slumped. When her name was called, she walked forward with her eyes downcast, her moment of triumph tainted by her father's empty chair.

I applauded until my palms stung, blinking back tears, my smile stretched so wide it felt like my face might crack.

Three hours later, I stood in Emma's bedroom, the graduation dress she had been so proud of clutched in my hands. Brandon had driven Victoria and her daughter home. Emma had cried herself to sleep. And something inside me had finally, irreparably broken.

With trembling hands, I tore at the delicate fabric, ripping apart the costume Emma had worn for her dance performance. Each tear felt like release, each rip a scream I couldn't voice. The scissors from Emma's craft table glinted in the soft lamplight. I grabbed them, cutting faster, more violently, until—

Pain sliced across my cheek. I gasped, dropping the scissors as warm blood trickled down my face.

The bedroom door opened. Brandon stood there, his expression shifting from irritation to revulsion as his eyes fixed on my bleeding face.

"You're still..." he whispered, taking an involuntary step back. "You're still different."

In that single word—"different"—eight years of pretense crumbled. I saw the truth in his eyes: he had never seen past my scars. The surgery, the name change, the years of playing the perfect wife—none of it had mattered. To him, I would always be the disfigured girl, the "freak" he had settled for.

I touched my bleeding cheek, feeling the warm wetness on my fingertips. And for the first time in eight years, I looked at my husband—really looked at him—and saw nothing worth saving.
