Chapter 2

I waited three days before touching Mitchell's phone again. Three days of smiling at him across the breakfast table, of asking about his day, of tucking Emma into bed while he worked late—or so he claimed. Three days of planning.

"Working late again?" I asked, my voice steady as I folded laundry on our bed. "That's the third time this week."

Mitchell glanced up from his laptop, guilt flashing across his face before settling into a practiced expression of exhaustion. "Project deadline. Anderson needs these numbers by morning."

I nodded, the perfect understanding wife. "Take care of yourself. I'll save you some dinner."

As soon as he left, I slipped into our home office and turned on the computer. My hands trembled slightly as I navigated to his cloud storage—he'd given me access years ago, trusting me to organize family photos and tax documents.

Now I was looking for something else entirely.

The text messages were backed up automatically. I took screenshots, careful to capture the timestamps and full conversation threads. My stomach churned as I read through them again, each word a fresh cut.

"I can't wait until you leave her," Brooklyn had written.

"Soon," Mitchell had replied. "Just need to figure out the finances."

Finances. Our finances. The money we'd saved for Emma's future.

I created a new folder, password-protected, and labeled it "Tax Documents 2023." Inside, I stored the screenshots, renaming files with innocuous titles like "Charitable Contributions" and "Medical Receipts."

Next, I found Brooklyn's social media accounts. It wasn't hard—her username was right there in Mitchell's contacts. Brooklyn Jordan, 23, with a profile picture that showed off flawless makeup and a designer bag I recognized from Mitchell's credit card statement.

I scrolled through her feed, each post a knife to my heart.

"New bag alert! #blessed #newfavorite" with a photo of a Prada tote I'd never seen before.

"Dinner at Le Bernardin with my favorite person. #romance #nycbest" with a photo of champagne glasses and a man's hand—Mitchell's hand, with the distinctive silver cufflink I'd given him for our fifth anniversary.

"Moving day! New apartment, new beginnings. #cityliving #upgrade" with a photo of a sleek living room in a high-rise building.

I took screenshots of everything, documenting dates and tags. Then I checked our bank statements.

$2,500 for a security deposit on an apartment.

$3,200 at Tiffany & Co.

$1,800 at Le Bernardin.

$4,500 at Prada.

All within the past eight months.

I created a spreadsheet, my CPA training kicking in automatically. Category, date, amount, description. Methodical. Organized. Clinical.

When Mitchell came home that night, I hugged him like nothing had changed.

---

"Business dinner with Anderson tonight," Mitchell announced a week later, adjusting his tie in the hallway mirror. "Could run late."

I smiled, kissed him goodbye, and waited thirty minutes after he left before grabbing my keys.

"Mommy?" Emma called from her room. "Are you going out?"

"Just for a little while, sweetheart. I need to pick up your medicine from the pharmacy."

I drove to the restaurant district, parking two blocks from Le Bernardin. If Mitchell was meeting Anderson, it would be at their usual steakhouse downtown. Not here.

Through the restaurant window, I spotted them immediately. Mitchell sat across from a young woman—Brooklyn—her head tilted back in laughter at something he'd said. His hand rested on hers on the table.

I raised my phone, hands steadier now, and took photos through the glass. Mitchell leaning in to whisper something. Brooklyn feeding him a bite of dessert from her fork. His arm around her waist as they left, his lips pressing against her neck in the shadow of the restaurant's awning.

Click. Click. Click.

Evidence.

Back home, I downloaded the photos to my secret folder and added them to my growing collection.

---

"Your turn," I said to Mitchell the following evening, sliding our joint credit card statement across the kitchen counter.

"What's this?" he asked, barely glancing at it.

"I thought we should review our finances," I said lightly. "Emma's school fundraiser is coming up, and I wanted to make sure we can afford to sponsor a table."

Mitchell frowned, scanning the statement. "What's this charge at Tiffany's?"

"Oh, that," I said, my heart pounding but my voice calm. "I bought a gift for your mother's birthday. Didn't I tell you?"

He nodded slowly, though I hadn't. "Right. Of course."

I watched him carefully as he flipped through the pages, marking each moment his finger paused on a charge he couldn't explain.

Later that night, I added the new figures to my spreadsheet. The total now exceeded $50,000.

Fifty thousand dollars of our savings. Fifty thousand dollars that should have gone to Emma's education, our retirement, our future.

Instead, it had bought Brooklyn Jordan designer handbags and a luxury apartment while she waited for my husband to leave his wife.

I stared at the spreadsheet, at the damning numbers that told the story of my marriage's destruction.

And for the first time since seeing that text message, I smiled.
