Chapter 1

I smoothed my hands over the crimson silk gown I'd chosen for our fifth anniversary celebration. The fabric caught the light as I turned before the mirror, examining my reflection with practiced scrutiny. Five years of marriage to Dominic Walker had taught me to be meticulous about my appearance. Five years of trying to be perfect. Five years of being someone else.

The woman who stared back at me wasn't the person I'd been born as. Her face—my face—had been sculpted by the finest plastic surgeons money could buy. I'd endured the pain willingly, transforming myself into the image of the woman Dominic had loved first. I'd even taken her name—Kyra—leaving my own identity behind like a snake shedding unwanted skin.

"Mrs. Walker, the car is waiting." Our housekeeper's voice pulled me from my thoughts.

"Thank you, I'll be right down."

The ballroom at Dominic's company headquarters glittered with crystal chandeliers and success. Hundreds of guests in formal attire mingled, champagne flutes catching the light. I felt a flutter of pride seeing my husband command the room. Tall and imposing in his tailored tuxedo, Dominic moved with the confidence of a man who owned not just the building, but the very air everyone breathed.

His eyes met mine across the room, and I felt that familiar ache—the desperate hope that tonight, finally, I might see genuine love reflected there. Tonight was special. Five years together, and the whispers I'd overheard from his assistant suggested he had planned something extraordinary.

Dominic tapped his glass, the crystalline ring silencing the crowd.

"Thank you all for joining us on this special evening." His voice carried effortlessly through the space. "Walker Industries wouldn't be where it is today without each of you."

Polite applause rippled through the gathering.

"But tonight isn't just about business success." Dominic's smile widened. "Today marks five years since I made the best decision of my life."

My heart quickened. I straightened my shoulders, preparing to join him when called.

"And to celebrate, I have something special." He reached into his pocket and withdrew a small velvet box. The crowd murmured appreciatively.

"This ring," he continued, opening the box to reveal a stunning diamond that caught the light like a captured star, "is dedicated to my true love. The person who has always held my heart, through everything."

I took a half-step forward, a smile forming on my lips.

But Dominic wasn't looking at me. His eyes scanned the crowd, searching. The smile on my face froze as confusion washed over me. The guests applauded, glasses raised in celebration, while I stood motionless, a statue in crimson silk.

Who was he looking for?

The rest of the evening passed in a blur. I maintained my composure through sheer force of will, accepting congratulations from people who assumed the ring was meant for me. Dominic remained by my side physically, but his attention was elsewhere, his eyes repeatedly drifting to the entrance as if expecting someone.

Someone who never arrived.

Later that night, while Dominic showered, a strange restlessness drove me to his study. I'd never invaded his privacy before—another unspoken rule in our carefully constructed marriage. But something had shifted inside me, a hairline fracture in the foundation of my belief.

His desk was immaculate, as always. The bottom drawer, however, was locked. I found the key taped beneath the drawer above it—an amateur hiding place for a man who trusted his wife's compliance.

Inside lay a folder labeled simply "G.M."

Gabriella Montgomery.

My hands trembled as I opened it. Bank statements showed regular payments to an account in her name. Photos spilled out—recent ones—of Dominic with a beautiful woman. The woman whose face I now wore. And between them, a small boy with Dominic's eyes.

The bathroom door opened down the hall. I quickly returned everything to its place, locking the drawer and replacing the key.

I didn't sleep that night. Instead, I lay beside my husband, studying the ceiling and wondering how I could have been so blind. Five years of surgeries, of changing my name, of erasing myself—all to become a placeholder for the woman he truly loved.

The next morning, I followed him. I told myself I needed confirmation, though the evidence had been clear enough. I parked across from his office building and waited.

At 9:15, a sleek black car pulled into the parking garage. Dominic emerged from the building to meet it. The woman who stepped out was everything I'd tried to become—but authentic, not a carefully constructed imitation.

Gabriella.

She moved into Dominic's arms with practiced ease, their kiss passionate and familiar. Then the back door opened, and a small boy tumbled out, racing toward them with unbridled joy.

"Daddy!"

Dominic's face transformed with genuine delight as he scooped up the child—a four-year-old with his eyes and smile. The perfect family tableau unfolded before me like a knife to the heart.

I watched them, these three people bound by blood and genuine love, and finally understood. The ring had never been meant for me. Nothing had ever been meant for me.
