Chapter 3

I was terrified after that kiss.

Yet, a part of my brain shouts to me, claiming that I actually want more.

The next morning, my fingers trembled as I applied my makeup, carefully covering the evidence of a sleepless night. In the mirror, my eyes looked brighter somehow, fever-bright with a secret I couldn't afford to keep.

The Bell Street Café sat tucked between a hardware store and a dry cleaner's, its faded awning and chipped paint making it invisible to the country club crowd. Perfect for someone trying to avoid familiar faces. I chose a corner booth, ordering plain black coffee I didn't want just to have something to do with my hands.

I nearly spilled my coffee when Grayson slid into the booth across from me, uninvited and completely at ease.

"If you're trying to hide, you picked the wrong lipstick." He wore a simple gray t-shirt that clung to his shoulders, making him look younger and more dangerous than the day before.

"I'm not hiding," I lied, unconsciously touching my lips, suddenly aware I'd chosen a shade brighter than my usual neutral pink.

"Aren't you?" His smile was infuriating, confident. "Most people don't white-knuckle their coffee cups while staring at the door like they're expecting the firing squad."

He signaled the waitress, ordering coffee for himself and a refill for me without asking. The casual presumption should have annoyed me. Instead, something warm unfurled in my chest at being seen, really seen, for the first time in years.

"About last night—" I began.

"Was something I've been wanting to do since I saw you chasing apples across the grocery store floor." His eyes held mine, unapologetic. "And something I'd very much like to do again."

The directness of it stole my breath. Charles had never spoken to me like this—raw and honest, without calculation.

"I'm married," I whispered.

"I noticed." His gaze flicked to my ring finger. "Does he make you happy, Sylvia?"

No one had asked me that question in years. Not my friends, not my sister. Certainly not Charles.

"Happiness isn't always the point," I said finally.

"Then what is?"

"Stability. Security." I swallowed hard. "My sister is very ill. She needs—"

"I didn't ask what your sister needs." His voice softened, but his eyes remained intent. "I asked what makes *you* happy."

The question hung between us, dangerous and enticing. For a moment, I couldn't remember what happiness felt like.

"I should go." I reached for my purse.

His hand covered mine, warm and steady. "You don't have to run, Sylvia. Not from me."

Something in his tone made me look up. There was no mockery in his expression now, only an intensity that made my heart stumble. He wasn't just playing a game. He wanted me—plain, faded Sylvia Trent with her sensible shoes and carefully contained life.

"I need time," I said finally.

He nodded, releasing my hand. "I've got all the time in the world. And so do you, if you'd just allow yourself to take it."

I left the café with my pulse racing, feeling both lighter and heavier than when I'd arrived.

The sound of shattering glass greeted me as I pushed open our front door. My heart leapt into my throat as I rushed toward the kitchen, all thoughts of Grayson vanishing instantly.

"Marianne!"

She lay crumpled on the tile floor, a broken water glass scattered around her like diamonds. Her face was chalk-white, eyes closed, one arm twisted beneath her at an unnatural angle.

"Mari! Oh God—" I dropped to my knees beside her, ignoring the glass cutting into my skin. My trembling fingers found her pulse—weak but present. "Marianne, can you hear me?"

Her eyelids fluttered. "Syl?" Her voice was a thread, barely audible.

"I'm here. I'm right here." I cradled her head in my lap, reaching for my phone. "I'm calling an ambulance."

"No," she whispered, clutching weakly at my wrist. "Too expensive. Just... help me up."

The reality of our situation crashed down on me like ice water. Even in this moment of crisis, the specter of Charles's financial control loomed large.

"You need a doctor."

"I need my medication," she insisted. "Just... fainted. Happens sometimes."

With infinite care, I helped her to the couch, my heart pounding with fear and guilt. What if I'd been gone longer? What if she'd hit her head on the counter instead of collapsing to the floor?

What if I'd lost her while I was flirting with the neighbor?

The thought sliced through me like a blade. I'd almost forgotten what was truly at stake in my life—not my happiness, but Marianne's survival.

Hours later, with Marianne finally resting upstairs, I escaped to the garden, desperate for air that didn't smell of antiseptic and fear. The afternoon sun felt obscene after the morning's terror, too bright and cheerful for the hollowness inside me.

"Rough day?"

I turned to find Grayson leaning against the fence, watching me with those too-perceptive eyes. Today, they held genuine concern.

"You could say that." My voice sounded distant, foreign.

Without invitation, he stepped into my garden, closing the distance between us. "Want to talk about it?"

"Not really." But even as I said it, I felt the hot press of tears behind my eyes.

He reached out, his thumb catching a tear I hadn't realized had fallen. "Hey, it's okay."

And suddenly it wasn't okay—nothing was okay. The tears came in a flood, months of fear and pressure breaking through the dam of my careful composure. To my horror, I found myself sobbing against his chest, his arms wrapped around me like a shield.

"My sister collapsed today," I managed between gasps. "She could have died while I was out drinking coffee and... and..."

"And sitting across from me," he finished softly. "But she didn't die. She's okay."

"This time." I pulled back slightly, wiping furiously at my eyes. "God, I don't know why I'm telling you this."

"Maybe because I'm not part of your carefully constructed life." His smile held no mockery now. "Sometimes strangers are safer than the people we're supposed to trust."

Something about his words hit too close to home. "Do you have family?" I asked, desperate to shift the focus.

“No.” His face darkened just a little, but his tone was almost teasing. “Just a few scandals.”

I tensed in his arms. “Scandals?”

He gave a slow, careless shrug and stepped back, eyes gleaming with mischief. “Yeah, you could say that. Guess my reputation likes to precede me.”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“Oh, not a big deal.” He smirked, voice low and playful. “Lost my medical license. Ethics violation. That’s why they sent me to this charming little hellhole instead of letting me run a fancy practice downtown.”

The word 'medical' triggered something cold in my chest. I took an involuntary step back.

"You were a doctor?"

"Was being the operative word." His eyes studied my face. "Does that change things?"

It shouldn't have. But all I could think about was Marianne, vulnerable and ill, and how close I'd come to betraying her by indulging in...whatever this was.

"I need to check on my sister," I said stiffly, already backing toward the house.

"Sylvia—" he started.

"Thank you for your concern," I cut him off, my voice formal, distant. "But I really need to go."

I turned and walked away, feeling his eyes on my back, refusing to look back even when he called my name again softly. The fantasy was over. Reality—my reality of illness and control and responsibility—had reasserted itself with brutal clarity.

But as I closed the garden door behind me, one treacherous thought remained: Why did walking away from him feel like losing something precious I'd only just found?
