Chapter 4

Dominic's Point Of View

From the moment I pulled up to the cracked pavement outside Elora Grayson’s residence, I knew this wasn’t going to be easy. The dilapidated apartment complex looked like it was held together by duct tape and good intentions. Rust streaked the railings, and a flickering porch light cast a pathetic glow on the entrance.

“This is what she calls home?” I muttered under my breath, tapping my fingers impatiently against the steering wheel of my black Aston Martin. My arrival felt like a statement of superiority, which, to be fair, it was. This wasn’t just about collecting her and my unborn child, it was about sending a message.

I honked once, sharp and loud, and leaned back in my seat. She appeared a moment later, clutching a small suitcase and walking with hesitant steps. The bag was old, its fabric faded and seams fraying. Her shoulders were stiff, as if bracing for whatever storm I was about to unleash.

When she slid into the passenger seat, I didn’t bother to hide my disdain. “Do you live here by choice or because no one else would take you in?”

Her head snapped toward me, her eyes narrowing. “Nice to see you too, Mr. Hale,” she said, her voice laced with sarcasm.

I smirked, though there was no humor in it. “Charming. You should save the attitude, it won’t help you.”

She didn’t respond, her gaze fixed out the window as I pulled away from the curb. The silence stretched, tense and uncomfortable.

When we arrived at my estate, the contrast was almost laughable. The sprawling mansion loomed ahead, its grand façade illuminated by soft landscape lighting. The pristine driveway, lined with perfectly manicured hedges, led to a home that exuded power and wealth.

Elora stepped out of the car slowly, her eyes widening as she took in the sheer scale of it all.

“Impressed?” I asked, my tone bordering on mockery.

She glanced at me, her lips pressed into a thin line. “It’s… excessive.”

“Excessive?” I repeated, arching a brow. “That’s rich coming from someone who lived in a place that should be condemned.”

She flinched, and for a moment, I almost regretted the jab. Almost.

“I don’t have to justify my life to you,” she said quietly, her voice trembling just enough to betray her nerves.

“No, you don’t,” I said, brushing past her and heading toward the door. “But while you’re under my roof, you’ll follow my rules. Let’s go.”

Once inside, I led her through the grand foyer, the polished marble floors gleaming under the chandelier’s light. She trailed behind me, her footsteps hesitant as she took in the opulence around her.

“This is your room,” I said, pushing open a door on the second floor. The room was large, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a bed that looked like it belonged in a five-star hotel.

She stepped inside, clutching her suitcase tightly. “It’s beautiful,” she admitted, though her voice lacked warmth.

“You’ll find everything you need here,” I said briskly. “But let me be clear: you’re not here as a guest. This isn’t some charity case.”

She turned to face me, her eyes flashing with defiance. “I never asked for charity, Mr. Hale.”

“No, you didn’t,” I said, taking a step closer. “But you’re carrying my child, which makes you my responsibility. And I take my responsibilities very seriously.”

Her jaw tightened, and for a moment, she looked like she wanted to argue. But then she glanced around the room again, her shoulders slumping slightly.

“Fine,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Good,” I said, my tone cold. “Now, let’s talk about the rules.”

She sighed, crossing her arms. “Rules? Of course there are rules.”

“You’ll eat what’s provided,” I said, ignoring her sarcasm. “You’ll follow the schedule I set for doctor’s appointments. And you’ll stay out of my way. I’m not interested in playing house, Miss Grayson. And finally No Dating”

She bristled, her eyes narrowing. “And what about me? Do I get a say in anything?”

“No,” I said flatly.

She let out a bitter laugh, shaking her head. “This is ridiculous. How do you expect to raise a child in an environment like this? Cold, sterile, and full of rules. Children need love, warmth.. ”

“Spare me the lecture,” I interrupted. “You think your rundown apartment was the picture of a loving environment? If anything, I’ve done this child a favor by bringing you here.”

Her cheeks flushed with anger, but she said nothing. I could see the conflict in her eyes, fear warring with fury.

“Look,” she said finally, her voice trembling. “I didn’t ask for this. I didn’t ask to be part of your world or your plans. But this child… it’s mine too. And I won’t let you treat me like some disposable vessel.”

Her words hung in the air, surprising me. There was fire in her voice, a spark of defiance that I hadn’t expected.

“You don’t get to dictate how this goes,” I said, my voice low and dangerous. “Not while you’re under my roof.”

She stared at me, her chest rising and falling as she struggled to control her breathing. For a moment, I thought she might snap, might scream or lash out. But then she turned away, her fingers tightening around the strap of her suitcase.

“Whatever you say, Mr. Hale,” she said, her tone bitter.

I watched her for a moment longer, then stepped back toward the door. “Good. You’re learning.”

As I left the room and headed to my own, I couldn’t shake the image of her standing there, trembling but defiant. She was infuriating, no doubt about it. But there was something else, something I couldn’t quite put my finger on.

Intriguing.

I shook the thought away as I entered my room, shutting the door behind me. Whatever this was, it wasn’t about her. It was about the child she was carrying, the heir I needed. Nothing more.

At least, that’s what I told myself.
