Uncovering the Stepmother: Is She Really a Murderer? Chapter 1
My brother walked out of my life two years ago, the day I caused the death of his best friend.
Now he’s back, but he’s not the same Liam I once knew.. he’s distant, cold, and filled with secrets.
When I stumble upon a journal that reveals our stepmom’s dark past and the truth behind the tragedy that tore us apart, everything changes.
We’re forced to work together, uncovering lies buried deep in our family.
But can two broken siblings take down the woman who raised us, or will the truth destroy us all?
*********
It’s been two years since Liam walked out of this house, and now he’s back like a ghost from a nightmare. I stand in the doorway, clutching the hem of my sweater as if it’ll somehow stop the knot in my stomach from tightening. He doesn’t look at me. Not even a glance.
“Liam,” I say, my voice sounding smaller than I intended. He barely pauses, heading straight to his old room with a heavy duffel bag slung over his shoulder. The thud of his footsteps echoes down the hallway, a reminder of how different things have become.
I swallow the lump in my throat and force myself to follow him. I want to say something, anything to break the ice, but the words choke me. What do you say to the brother who once adored you, but now can’t even stand to be in the same room as you?
Two years ago, everything changed. One reckless decision, one moment of thoughtlessness, and Alex was gone. Liam’s best friend, his brother in every way but blood, dead because of me.
The weight of that memory presses down on me every single day, but it’s the look in Liam’s eyes.. when he does look at me.. that cuts the deepest. The coldness, the accusation, the loss.
I knock on his door, hesitant. There’s a long pause before he swings it open. His eyes are like ice, hard and unforgiving.
“What do you want, Maya?” His voice is flat, almost bored, but the edge is unmistakable.
“I just… I wanted to see how you’re doing. It’s been a while.”
“Two years isn’t just a while, Maya.” He doesn’t wait for a response, turning away and leaving the door wide open as if daring me to step inside. But I don’t. I’m frozen in place, wishing I could go back in time and undo everything that happened.
I watch as he starts unpacking, his movements sharp, as if each item he sets down is an outlet for the anger he won’t express. The silence between us is suffocating, filled with all the words left unsaid. I’ve rehearsed apologies a thousand times in my head, but now that he’s here, they feel empty, useless.
“You’re not even going to ask why I’m back?” Liam’s voice cuts through my thoughts.
I blink, thrown off by his sudden question. “Why are you back?”
He meets my eyes for the first time since he arrived. “I have unfinished business.” There’s a flicker of something in his expression.. determination, maybe even revenge.. but it’s gone before I can make sense of it.
“Unfinished business?” I echo, confused.
“Don’t worry about it,” he says, his tone dismissive. “It’s nothing you can fix.”
And just like that, he shuts me out again. I stand there for a moment longer, hoping he’ll say something else, but he’s already turned his back on me, lost in whatever mission brought him back here. I force myself to leave, retreating to my own room where memories of happier times haunt me.
Liam and I used to be inseparable. He was the one who taught me how to ride a bike, how to stand up for myself, how to be brave. Now, he can’t even bear to be near me. And I don’t blame him.
But as I sit on the edge of my bed, staring at the chipped paint on the wall, I know one thing for sure.. I can’t keep living like this. I have to find a way to bridge the space between us, no matter how impossible it seems.
Because if I don’t, I might lose him forever. And that’s a thought I can’t bear.
