Chapter 6

Elena’s POV

At security I had to remove the sling and hold my arm carefully while the agent checked the medical note Lucas had printed. People stared.

But I stared at the floor. On the other side Lucas helped me put the sling back on without making a big production of it. His hands were careful. He still looked like he wanted to go find Damian and finish what the orderlies had stopped.

We reached the gate with twenty minutes to spare. Lucas bought water and protein bars. Samantha offered me half of a chocolate croissant she didn’t really want. I took a few bites because she watched me until I did. The gate agent called first-class and priority boarding. Lucas stepped forward with the three tickets and the medical documentation. That was when the mix-up started.

While he was explaining the arm injury and asking if we could board early, Samantha was helping me zip my jacket without catching the fabric on the bandage. One of the boarding passes slipped.

Another got folded the wrong way. Lucas shuffled them, checked the names, checked them again. By the time the agent scanned them and waved us through, none of us noticed that the seat numbers no longer matched the plan.

We walked down the jet bridge in a loose line. The plane smelled like industrial cleaner and stale air. People were already shoving bags into overhead bins. Lucas stopped at row fourteen and frowned at the tickets in his hand.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Samantha leaned over his shoulder. “What?”

“Two of us are here. Elena’s in nine.”

I took the ticket he held out.

9C.

Window.

Alone.

“It’s fine,” I said. The words came out flatter than I meant. “I’m not going to fall apart because we’re not in the same row.”

Lucas’s jaw flexed. “Ellie…”

“I mean it. Go sit. Text me if the plane crashes.”

Samantha gave me the look that said she didn’t buy the joke, but she didn’t argue. They moved toward the back. I walked forward, scanning the numbers above the seats, carrying my bag carefully so it wouldn’t bump the injured arm.

Row nine was already occupied.

A man sat in the window seat like it had been reserved for him since the plane was built. Tall. Broad through the shoulders under a charcoal suit that fit too well to be off the rack. Black hair cut short. Sharp jaw. The kind of face that made people look twice and then pretend they hadn’t. He was reading something on a tablet, one ankle resting over the opposite knee. An expensive watch caught the overhead light when he turned a digital page. Everything about him was controlled and quiet. The air around him felt like it had decided to lower its volume out of respect or caution.

I stopped in the aisle.

“Excuse me.”

He didn’t look up right away. When he did, his eyes were dark and unreadable. He took in my face, the sling, the boarding pass in my right hand.

I held it out. “I think you’re in my seat.”

He glanced at the ticket, then at his own phone. A second boarding pass glowed on the screen.

Same row.

Same letter.

“That’s unfortunate,” he said. His voice was low, calm, almost bored.

I waited for him to stand.

But he didn’t.

“Your ticket says 9C. Mine says 9C. One of us is wrong.”

“Apparently.”

“So you’re going to move?”

He looked at me again, longer this time. Not rude. Just measuring. Like he was deciding whether the inconvenience was worth the effort of standing.

“I’m afraid that won't be possible.”

“Why?”

He glanced at the boarding pass in my hand.

“Because according to mine, this is my seat too.”

Heat crawled up the back of my neck. I was exhausted. My arm hurt. I had spent the last day watching the man I was supposed to marry choose someone else in every possible way, and now this stranger was sitting in my assigned seat like the rules of commercial aviation were optional for him.

“You’re not serious.”

“I am.”

I could have called the flight attendant. I could have made a scene. Part of me wanted to. The bigger part of me just wanted to sit down before my legs gave out and someone noticed I was shaking.

I dropped into the aisle seat beside him hard enough that the cushion sighed. My bag landed at my feet. I stared straight ahead at the seatback in front of me and refused to look at him again.

A few rows back I heard Samantha’s soft laugh and Lucas’s muttered “Jesus Christ.” I ignored them.

The doors closed. Safety demonstration. The plane pushed back. I kept my eyes on the window even though the view was nothing but gray tarmac and distant terminals. The stranger beside me didn’t speak. He went back to his tablet like I didn’t exist.

That suited me fine.

We climbed.

The city fell away under the wing. I pressed my forehead lightly against the cool plastic of the window and tried not to think about the last time I had flown out of New York with Damian. He had held my hand during takeoff because I hated the feeling of leaving the ground. This time no one held my hand. The stitches pulled every time the plane banked.

Somewhere over Pennsylvania the stranger received a call. He answered on the first ring, voice dropping even lower.

“Talk.”

I didn’t mean to listen. The cabin was quiet and the seats were close. Numbers floated past, eight figures, timelines, something about a merger that needed to close before the quarter ended. Whoever was on the other end sounded nervous. The man beside me never raised his voice. He didn’t need to. Every sentence was short and final. People clearly did what he said.

When he hung up, he set the phone face-down on his knee and went still again.

I shifted, trying to find a position that didn’t put pressure on my arm. The hard plastic of the armrest dug into the bandage. I bit the inside of my cheek and stared harder at the clouds.

A flight attendant appeared a minute later with an extra pillow. She held it out toward me.

“For your arm, miss. Compliments of the gentleman beside you.”
