Chapter 2

Elena POV

The private room of the Syndicate-owned restaurant was dense with the smoke of expensive cigars and roasted garlic. I walked through the heavy oak doors, wearing the red dress Vincenzo had demanded.

My eyes immediately fell on the head of the table, where Vincenzo was already presiding.

Sitting directly to his right—in the seat traditionally reserved for the Underboss's wife—was Camilla. She was wearing Vincenzo's dark suit jacket draped over her bare shoulders. Pinned to the lapel was a gold crest—a Family associate pin.

The room was filled with Vincenzo's Capos and Soldiers. They were laughing and drinking, completely ignoring the blatant disrespect playing out before them.

Vincenzo's gaze flicked across the room to where a senior Capo sat watching—a man who had known my family for decades, a silent reminder that this insult would carry consequences beyond this room. He hesitated for half a second, then fixed his gaze on me, jaw set.

Vincenzo looked up and met my gaze. He didn't stand. He didn't offer his hand.

He simply pointed to an empty chair at the far end of the long table, near the swinging kitchen doors and the serving staff. "Sit there, Elena," he ordered, his tone flat and dismissive. "The head of the table is too close to the business talk. You'll be bored."

Camilla placed a manicured hand to her chest, her eyes wide with practiced innocence. "Oh, Vincenzo, I should move. It's not proper."

She made no physical attempt to stand.

Vincenzo put a heavy hand on her shoulder, keeping her firmly in place, before fixing me with a dark, warning glare. "Don't cause a scene in front of the men."

I didn't say a word. I walked the length of the table and sat down.

I placed my designer clutch on the linen next to my plate. Inside, the tiny red light of the recording device pulsed silently.

The dinner commenced, and the wine flowed freely.

A drunken Soldier across from me slammed his glass down, laughing loudly. "I'm telling you, Boss, you and Camilla are a lethal pair. The way you two handled that port authority issue last month? Flawless."

Vincenzo chuckled, a low, arrogant sound from his chest. "She knows how to handle the heat. Nothing improper, just good business."

Camilla blushed, leaning closer to him.

When the waiters brought out the main courses, Vincenzo personally took a silver serving fork and placed a prime cut of medium-rare steak onto Camilla's plate. He then poured her a glass of thousand-dollar vintage wine.

A waiter set a plate in front of me.

It was a steaming dish of shellfish stew.

I stared at the pink shrimp and mussels. I was deathly allergic to shellfish. One bite would send my throat into anaphylactic shock—a fact my husband of two years knew perfectly well. He had sat beside me in the emergency room two years ago when a cross-contaminated appetizer nearly killed me. I had reminded him of it again at a family dinner six months later, when I pushed away a seafood platter and told him explicitly that I could never touch shrimp, mussels, or anything from that family. The memory was in my medical file. It was in our kitchen protocol. It was inescapable. And yet, here it was, placed before me like a stranger's meal.

I looked down the table at my husband. He wasn't looking at me. He was wiping a drop of wine from Camilla's chin with his thumb.

Camilla caught my eye through the flickering candlelight. She raised her glass toward me, a venomous smile playing on her lips. "I'm so sorry, Elena," she called out, her voice carrying easily over the chatter. "I know I take up so much of his time. I only talk to him so much to help him manage the stress of the life. You know how heavy the crown is."

The Capos sitting near me nodded in somber agreement.

An older man leaned in, his breath thick with whiskey. "She's right, sweetheart. You gotta understand the burden of an Underboss. Don't break the peace over trivial jealousies. A good mafia wife keeps her mouth shut."

I slowly pushed the plate of shellfish away and picked up my water glass.

"Does thirty-one encrypted video calls in a single month constitute 'managing the stress of the life'?" I asked.

My voice wasn't loud, but it had a dead, flat quality that cut through the noisy room like a razor blade.

The laughter died instantly. The room fell silent.

Vincenzo's head snapped toward me. His expression darkened into a lethal, terrifying scowl. "Watch your mouth, Elena," he warned, his voice dropping to a dangerous octave. "You do not bring private grievances into a Syndicate gathering."

Camilla's eyes immediately welled up with tears, and her bottom lip trembled. "Vincenzo," she stammered, her voice breaking with practiced fragility. "The calls were strictly to verify secure routes. I was facing severe anxiety from the death threats. I was terrified."

"She was under threat," Vincenzo barked at me, his fists clenching on the table. "I am an Underboss. I protect our assets."

I reached into my clutch and pulled out my phone. I illuminated the screen and slid it hard across the table. It glided on the polished wood, coming to a halt right in front of Vincenzo's plate.

It was a clear screenshot. A decrypted log from an offshore secure line. The details glowed in the dim room: Time stamp: 2:14 AM. Duration: Forty-five minutes. Audio transcript attached: Vincenzo singing 'Happy Birthday' to Camilla while on an active, high-risk smuggling route.

Vincenzo stared at the screen. The color drained from his face.

The hum of the overhead fan suddenly seemed deafening. I heard the clink of ice in a distant water glass, but it sounded like a small, dead bird falling against the bars of its cage.

I stood up and walked toward the powder room without looking back. As I passed the senior Capo's seat, I caught the slight incline of his head—a silent acknowledgment. The room knew now. The room was choosing sides.

I stood in front of the marble sink, washing my hands in cold water to slow my pulse.

The restroom door clicked open, and Camilla walked in.

The tears were instantly gone from her face. She pulled a tube of red lipstick from her purse and began applying it in the mirror, watching my reflection with cold eyes. Her gaze flicked briefly to my clutch on the counter. She reached over and turned on the faucet at the empty sink beside me, letting the water run—a casual move, but I recognized it for what it was: a precaution against anyone listening. She thought running water would muddy any recording. She didn't know the device in my clutch was designed to filter ambient noise.

"Are you wearing a wire, sweetie?" she asked, a smug, mocking tone in her voice.

"I don't need one," I replied, my voice flat. "Your face tells me everything I need to know."

She laughed, capping her lipstick with a snap. "You're embarrassing yourself. You think a screenshot of a birthday song matters? His first call upon hitting land is always to me. Every single time. He's a married Underboss, and he still runs to me like a dog."

She pulled out her own phone and shoved the screen in my face.

It was a text from Vincenzo, sent yesterday. It read: 'She finally stopped texting me. Peace at last.'

I stared at the words. They didn't even register anymore. There was nothing left inside me to wound.

Camilla leaned in close, her perfume sickly sweet. "The thing a powerful man fears most isn't a wife who screams. It's a useless one who refuses to bow out gracefully."

I looked at her, my expression unchanged. I didn't blink.

"You can repeat that exact phrase at the Don's judgment table," I said, my voice devoid of inflection.

Camilla paled. She took a step back, her mouth falling open. For the first time, I saw something break through her smug mask—not guilt, but a flicker of genuine fear. She had miscalculated. She had assumed I would absorb every blow in silence, that my dignity would keep me docile forever. But the word "Don" had changed the equation. She knew what that meant. She knew what evidence could do.

I moved past her and exited the restroom.

Vincenzo was waiting in the dark corridor. His massive frame blocked my path. He grabbed my arm, his grip tight enough to bruise.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" he hissed, his eyes burning with fury. "Disrespecting my authority in front of the Family? You are making me look weak."

"I am returning to my family's estate tomorrow," I said, my voice empty.

His jaw locked. "When is this rebellion of yours going to end?"

I yanked my arm out of his grip and walked past him toward the exit.

And all the while, inside my clutch, the red light continued to blink silently, recording every word.

I stepped out into the cold night air, the weight of two years of silence finally lifting from my chest. He thought this was a tantrum, a fit of jealous rage. He had no idea I had already laid the groundwork. He had no idea the war was already over before he knew it had begun. And he had no idea that the woman he had just threatened in the corridor had spent the past month preparing a case that would strip him of everything he had ever taken for granted.
