Chapter 3

Avery pushed open the heavy walnut door to the master bedroom and closed it behind her, the latch clicking shut with a sound of finality. The noise of the party instantly muted to a dull, distant thrum. In here, it was silent.

The silence of a tomb.

Outside, she could hear Eleanor's voice, smoothly placating the guests, spinning a tale of Avery's emotional instability. She was always the outsider, the problem to be managed.

She walked to the ornate vanity table, a monstrosity of gold leaf that Eleanor had insisted upon. She stared at her reflection in the mirror. The face looking back was hers, but younger. The fine lines of stress around her eyes were gone. The perpetual tension in her jaw had vanished. This was the face of a woman who still had hope.

A bitter laugh escaped her lips, small and humorless.

Her eyes fell to the top drawer of the vanity. Her hand, steady and deliberate, pulled it open. Beneath a velvet tray of earrings lay a stiff, cream-colored envelope. The marriage certificate. And tucked inside it, a folded copy of the document that had defined her existence for the last five years.

The prenuptial agreement.

She remembered the day she signed it, in a sterile conference room at Bennett's lawyer's office. He had held her hand, telling her it was just a formality, a way to protect the family business for Leo's future. She, a 25-year-old woman in love, had believed him. She hadn't cared about the clauses that stripped her of any claim to his fortune, that stipulated her voting rights in Glenn Industries would be held in trust by him, that offered a severance package so insulting it was barely enough to rent a studio apartment in Queens.

She had been a fool. A willing lamb to the slaughter.

The bedroom door flew open, slamming against the wall. Bennett stood there, his face a thundercloud. He had left the party. Left his son. To come and discipline her.

"What was that out there?" he demanded, his voice low and menacing. "You scared Leo. You humiliated Celine."

Avery turned slowly on the vanity stool to face him. She looked at him, really looked at him. The perfectly tailored Tom Ford suit, the Patek Philippe watch, the handsome face twisted into a mask of self-righteous anger. He was a beautiful, hollow man.

"I scared Leo?" she repeated, her voice dangerously soft. "Or I interrupted your public foreplay with your mistress?"

A flash of fury crossed his face. He wasn't used to being challenged. "Celine is a friend of the family. You will treat her with respect. Now, you are going to go out there and apologize."

He wasn't asking. He was commanding. The CEO of Carlisle Group, managing an underperforming asset.

Something inside Avery, the last thread of her old self, finally snapped.

She stood up, grabbed the marriage certificate, and slammed it down on the marble top of the vanity. The sound echoed in the silent room.

Bennett flinched, surprised by the violence of the action.

"No," Avery said. Her voice was calm. Frighteningly calm. Even as she heard a faint commotion from the living room-a child's cry, a woman's shriek-she felt nothing. No panic. No maternal pull. Just a vast, cold emptiness.

She lifted her chin, her eyes locking onto his.

"I want a divorce."

Bennett stared at her for a second, his brain processing the words. Then he let out a short, sharp laugh. A bark of disbelief.

"A divorce?" he scoffed, tugging at the knot of his silk tie, a familiar gesture of his when he felt a situation slipping from his control. "Don't be pathetic, Avery. If this is about your allowance, we can discuss a modest increase. But this little tantrum is over."

He saw this as a negotiation. A hostile takeover bid for a better lifestyle package. The thought was so insulting, so utterly Bennett, that she didn't even feel anger anymore. Just a profound, weary sadness for the woman she used to be.

"Bennett? Is everything okay?" Celine's voice, dripping with fake concern, drifted down the hallway. The sound made Avery's skin crawl.

The memory of the crash, the feeling of her lungs filling with blood, returned with a vengeance. The air in this room felt toxic, thick with lies and betrayal. She had to get out. Now.

She turned from Bennett and walked into the enormous walk-in closet, a space larger than her first apartment. It was lined with racks of designer clothes and shelves of handbags, all paid for by him. Cages within a cage.

She grabbed a simple leather duffel bag from a top shelf, a bag she'd owned since college. It was hers.

Bennett followed her, his expression hardening as he saw she was serious. "Where do you think you're going? Back to your parents? They can't afford to keep you in the style you've become accustomed to. You'll be back in a week, begging." His confidence was absolute, unshakeable. He truly believed she was nothing without him.

Avery didn't answer. She pulled open a drawer and took out a pair of jeans, a cashmere sweater, and a few sets of underwear. She stuffed them into the bag. Her eyes swept over the velvet-lined trays of jewelry-diamonds, sapphires, pearls. Gifts from him. Shackles. She didn't touch a single one.

She knew the cake was a ticking time bomb out there. But if she stayed, she would be the one blamed. The hysterical wife who "caused" the incident. No. Let them handle their own mess. Self-preservation. It was a lesson she'd learned the hard way, in a mangled car on a frozen highway.

She zipped the duffel bag shut. The sound was crisp, decisive.

She turned and walked past him, her shoulder brushing his expensive suit. She didn't look at him. She didn't say another word.

She was already gone.
