Chapter 2

Isabella's POV

The Grant estate had been designed to make vulnerability invisible.

Glass walls disguised as strength. Marble floors that never remembered footsteps. Even the silence here felt curated — not the natural hush of a place at rest, but the manufactured stillness of people who had learned how to keep their fear quiet.

I had been here twice before in my life. Once for a charity gala. Once for a hostile acquisition meeting that ended with my father publicly humiliating one of Julian Grant’s cousins. Both times, the house had felt like a performance space.

This time, it was a waiting room for grief.

Julian’s ICU wing was sealed behind biometric doors that opened only after Clara’s retina scan. Ethan stayed just outside, close enough to intervene, far enough to be irrelevant.

“You don’t have to go in yet,” he said softly.

I glanced back at him. “Do you think it would make a difference if I waited?”

He didn’t answer.

The door slid open with a muted sigh.

The room smelled faintly of antiseptic and ozone. Screens flickered with vitals that meant nothing to me. Julian lay in the center, surrounded by equipment that whispered around his stillness like a jury deliberating his right to exist.

He was younger than I remembered.

Not the mythic heir who once made the business pages look like fashion spreads, but a man stripped of momentum. His lashes were dark against his skin. His lips were slightly parted, as if he had been about to speak when the world took that privilege away.

“This is where he’s been for the last six months,” Clara said quietly. “The board hasn’t visited in weeks.”

“Because he’s inconvenient,” I replied.

“Because he isn’t profitable.”

We stood there in silence. I didn’t reach for him. I didn’t speak his name.

“Julian prepared for this,” Clara said eventually.

“For being unconscious?”

“For not being able to protect his interests.”

She stepped closer to the bed and brushed invisible lint from his blanket with a tenderness that felt strangely practiced.

“He signed a medical trust. If he becomes incapacitated, his assets are placed in provisional management until a legal spouse or blood heir steps in.”

“And now that spouse is me.”

Her gaze flicked to me. “For now.”

That phrase again.

“You think I won’t last,” I said.

“I think most people mistake contracts for control.”

I almost smiled.

---

On the drive back, rain streaked down the windows like something trying to escape.

“You didn’t touch him,” Ethan said.

“That disappoints you?”

“No,” he replied quickly. “I just expected—”

“Emotion?”

“Yes.”

I turned my face toward the glass. “That would be dishonest.”

“You’re marrying him.”

“I’m stabilizing a failing empire,” I corrected. “Marriage is the packaging.”

He hesitated. “You’re not afraid?”

“I don’t trust fear. It clouds negotiation.”

His knuckles tightened on the steering wheel.

“There’s something else you should know,” he said.

I waited.

“The Grant family has been reassigning internal security. They’re auditing external loyalties.”

“Meaning?”

“Meaning they’re watching everyone around you now. Including me.”

I looked at him. “Are you nervous?”

“No,” he said too quickly.

---

The east wing bedroom had already been rearranged by the time I returned to the estate.

My luggage sat neatly unpacked. My books shelved. Even my scarves had been hung in color order.

Someone had curated my existence.

I stood in the doorway, unsettled by the absence of chaos.

“Do you like it?” Clara asked from behind me.

“It’s efficient.”

“Efficiency is kindness here,” she replied. “We remove obstacles.”

I turned to face her. “Including people?”

She smiled thinly. “Sometimes.”

That night, I wandered the corridors unable to sleep. The house didn’t creak. It didn’t sigh. It absorbed sound like it was ashamed of it.

I found myself outside the west wing without remembering how I got there.

The door was ajar.

Lydia’s voice drifted out — low, warm, familiar.

“You shouldn’t keep hovering like that.”

Ethan answered her.

“I’m not hovering. I’m ensuring consistency.”

“You don’t sound convinced.”

There was a pause. The kind that reveals a person more than words ever could.

“She isn’t who you think she is,” he said.

My fingers curled slowly at my side.

“You mean Isabella?” Lydia asked.

“Yes.”

“Because she negotiated her own value?”

“Because she wants power,” he replied. “That makes her dangerous.”

I stepped forward.

“Funny,” I said softly. “I always thought it was the people who pretend not to want power who did the most damage.”

They both turned.

Ethan’s face lost color. Lydia’s eyes widened a fraction before smoothing back into composure.

“How long were you standing there?” Ethan asked.

“Long enough.”

Lydia took a step back. “I should go.”

“No,” I said. “Stay.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“You were discussing me,” I continued calmly. “Without me. That feels like a habit.”

“You’re misinterpreting—”

“No,” I said. “I’m identifying.”

He exhaled sharply. “Isabella, you are stepping into a family that doesn’t forgive mistakes. You think you’re controlling this, but you’re walking into a system that already has contingencies for you.”

“And you’re one of them?”

“I’m trying to prevent damage.”

“To whom?” I asked quietly. “Me? Or them?”

He didn’t answer.

---

Later, alone in the east wing, I removed my earrings and placed them in their velvet case.

I stared at my reflection — composed, immaculate, untouched.

Somewhere in the house, Julian Grant lay dreaming of nothing.

And somewhere else, the man who had always stood behind me had just admitted he was watching me like a liability.

This marriage wasn’t dangerous because Julian couldn’t speak.

It was dangerous because everyone else already was.
