Chapter 1

The gate clanged shut behind me with a finality that echoed through my bones. Three years, two months, and seventeen days of my life had been stolen from me, and now I stood on the cracked sidewalk outside Federal Women's Correctional Institution, clutching a clear plastic bag that contained everything I had left from my old life.

A black Bentley glided past me like a sleek predator, its tinted windows catching the harsh afternoon sun. I wouldn't have paid it any attention—luxury cars weren't exactly foreign to me—but something made me look closer. The rear window rolled down just enough to reveal a small face pressed against the glass.

Rosalie.

My three-year-old daughter, her golden curls catching the light, pointed directly at me with the innocent curiosity that only children possessed. Her voice carried through the gap in the window, sweet and clear as a bell.

"Mommy, who is that lady?"

The words hit me like a physical blow. I watched as Nicolette Blake—my former best friend, my daughter's current guardian—turned in the front passenger seat. Her perfectly manicured hand reached back to gently lower Rosalie's pointing finger, and she offered my daughter that same warm smile she used to give me when we shared secrets over wine.

"Just someone we used to know, sweetheart," Nicolette said, her voice carrying just far enough for me to hear. "Look, there's a pretty bird over there."

The window slid up with mechanical precision, sealing away the only thing in this world that mattered to me. The Bentley accelerated smoothly, leaving me standing there like a ghost from their past—which, I supposed, was exactly what I had become.

My fingernails dug into my palms until I felt the sharp bite of pain. But I didn't cry. Three years in federal prison had taught me that tears were a luxury I couldn't afford, a weakness that would be exploited by anyone watching. And there were always people watching.

The sound of another car door closing drew my attention. A black SUV had pulled up on the opposite side of the prison entrance, its engine purring with expensive restraint. A driver in a crisp uniform stepped out and opened the rear door, his movements precise and professional.

"Ms. Thornton?"

I turned toward the voice and found myself looking at a man who commanded attention without trying. He sat in the back seat of the SUV, his charcoal three-piece suit tailored to perfection, his dark hair swept back in a style that spoke of board rooms and billion-dollar deals. Everything about him radiated controlled power—from the way he held his shoulders to the calculating intelligence in his steel-gray eyes.

"I'm Caspian Vance," he said, his voice carrying the kind of authority that made people listen. "We need to talk."

I'd heard the name whispered in the financial circles I used to move in. Vance Capital. The man who could make or break fortunes with a single phone call, who operated in the shadows of Manhattan's elite. They called him the Dark Emperor of Wall Street, though never to his face.

"I'm not interested in whatever you're selling," I said, adjusting my grip on the plastic bag.

"I'm not selling anything." He gestured to the empty seat beside him. "I'm offering you the chance to take back what was stolen from you."

Something in his tone made me pause. This wasn't a random encounter—he'd been waiting for me. Against my better judgment, I approached the SUV.

The interior smelled like expensive leather and subtle cologne. Caspian didn't waste time with pleasantries. The moment I settled into the seat, he handed me a thick manila folder.

"Ashford Group transferred one hundred and twenty million dollars through three shell companies last year," he said, his voice matter-of-fact. "Forty-seven million of it ended up in offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. Your ex-husband thought he was very clever."

I opened the folder with trembling fingers. Financial documents, bank statements, transaction records—all bearing the Ashford Group letterhead. But it was the name on one of the shell companies that made my blood run cold: Thornton Holdings LLC.

"This is the account they used to frame me," I whispered, recognizing the numbers that had been burned into my memory during the trial.

"Sterling Ashford needed a scapegoat for his embezzlement scheme," Caspian said. "His wife was too valuable to sacrifice, and his business partners too dangerous to cross. But you—his expendable ex-wife—were perfect."

I stared at the documents, my hands shaking with a rage I'd kept buried for three years. "How did you get these?"

"I've been tracking Ashford's money for two years," he replied. "But financial records only tell part of the story. I need someone who was inside the family, someone who saw what they didn't want anyone else to see."

The implication was clear. He wanted me to be his witness, his inside source. But I'd learned not to trust anyone who offered help without a price.

"What's in it for you?" I asked.

"Sterling Ashford cost me a very lucrative deal when he pulled his dirty money out at the last second. I don't forgive business losses." His smile was sharp as a blade. "But more importantly, he made the mistake of thinking he could outmaneuver me."

I closed the folder and looked out the window toward the direction the Bentley had disappeared. "What about my daughter? Can you help me get custody back?"

Caspian reached into his jacket and produced an elegant business card. Morrison & Kessler—I recognized the name of Manhattan's most elite family law firm, the kind that charged a thousand dollars an hour just to answer the phone.

"They're already reviewing your case," he said. "But I need your cooperation first."

I took the card, feeling its expensive weight between my fingers. "I'm not just going to be your witness, Mr. Vance. I want to destroy them. All of them."

For the first time since I'd gotten into the car, something shifted in his expression. The cold calculation remained, but underneath it, I caught a glimpse of something that might have been respect.

"Then we understand each other," he said. "We start tonight."

"Tonight?"

Caspian's smile turned predatory. "The Ashford family's annual charity gala is this evening. Black tie, Manhattan's elite, all the usual suspects. And your name is still on the guest list."

I looked down at my prison-issued clothes, then back at him. "I'll need something to wear."

"That," he said, "can be arranged."
