Chapter 9

Lina didn't go straight to Adrian.

She told herself it was because the children were waiting, because they needed dinner and baths and bedtime stories. But deep down, she knew the truth-she needed time. Time to think. Time to breathe. Time to decide how much damage the envelope could really do.

The apartment felt smaller than usual when she stepped inside. The walls seemed closer, the silence heavier. The children were in the living room with the babysitter Adrian had arranged, their voices overlapping in excited chatter, completely unaware of the storm circling their lives.

"Mommy!" Noah shouted, jumping up first, as always.

"Did you bring snacks?" Elena asked immediately, practical and serious, her dark eyes sharp with expectation.

Lina smiled as Ethan rose more slowly, watching her carefully, already too perceptive for his age.

She knelt and pulled all three of them into her arms. Their warmth grounded her. For a moment, the fear loosened its grip.

"I missed you," she whispered.

Later, after dinner and baths and a long argument about bedtime, Lina tucked them in one by one. She lingered longer than usual-brushing Elena's hair, straightening Noah's blanket, smoothing the crease between Ethan's brows when he frowned in his sleep.

She memorized their faces like she might need the memory to survive something.

When the apartment finally went quiet, Lina sat alone at the kitchen table and pulled out the envelope.

She spread the documents slowly, carefully. Hospital timestamps. Internal memos. A consent form bearing a signature that looked like hers-but wasn't. Notes about subject compliance and donor alignment.

Her stomach twisted.

This wasn't just a mistake.

This was negligence layered with silence... and money.

Her phone buzzed.

Adrian Hale: Where are you?

Lina closed her eyes.

Adrian's office was still lit when she arrived. Floor-to-ceiling glass revealed the city stretched out below, glittering and indifferent. He stood the moment she entered, his expression tight, controlled-but the tension in his shoulders betrayed him.

"You took too long," he said quietly.

"I needed to think," Lina replied.

She didn't sit. Neither did he.

"Did she threaten you?" Adrian asked.

"Yes," Lina said. "No."

His jaw clenched. "Which one is it?"

"She didn't raise her voice. She didn't make demands." Lina placed the envelope on his desk. "She gave me this."

Adrian stared at it for a long moment before opening it.

The more he read, the darker his expression became.

"This is internal," he said finally. "Some of this was never meant to leave the hospital."

"I know."

"She's trying to control the narrative," he said. "If you use this wrong-"

"I could lose everything," Lina finished. "She made that very clear."

Adrian exhaled sharply and dropped into his chair. "This is blackmail."

"No," Lina corrected softly. "This is leverage."

He looked up at her, searching her face. "You shouldn't have met her alone."

"She wanted me alone."

"That's exactly why-"

"I'm not a child," Lina snapped, then softened immediately. "I'm sorry. I just... I needed to see her. To understand what kind of person she is."

"And now?"

Lina met his eyes. "Now I know she's patient. And dangerous."

Adrian leaned back, rubbing a hand over his face. "We'll bury her."

"No," Lina said quickly. "You won't."

He froze.

"What?"

"If you go after her openly, she'll turn this into a public war," Lina said. "And Ethan, Noah, and Elena will be caught in the middle."

"So what are you saying?" His voice was low now. Careful.

"I'm saying we move quietly," Lina replied. "We protect the kids. We document everything. And we don't underestimate her."

Adrian studied her, something like reluctant admiration flickering in his gaze. "She's changing you."

Lina gave a hollow smile. "She already has."

A knock interrupted them.

Adrian's assistant stepped in, pale. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but... there's been a development."

Adrian straightened. "What kind?"

"The child welfare board expedited the review," she said. "They want a home visit. Tomorrow morning."

Lina's heart dropped.

"Tomorrow?" Adrian repeated sharply. "That's impossible. We weren't notified-"

"They cited 'new information,'" the assistant said quietly.

Lina felt the room tilt.

New information.

Maris.

"She already moved," Lina whispered.

Adrian's eyes hardened. "I won't let them intimidate you."

"They don't have to," Lina said. "The system does that on its own."

That night, Lina barely slept.

Every creak of the apartment made her sit up. Every shadow looked like judgment. She woke before dawn and cleaned obsessively-scrubbing counters that were already spotless, rearranging toys, checking Ethan's school notes, Noah's reading log, Elena's vaccination card again and again.

By the time the knock came, her nerves were shredded.

Two women stood outside. Polite. Professional. Clipboards in hand.

"Ms. Moore," one of them said with a practiced smile. "We're here for the scheduled assessment."

The children clung to Lina's legs as the women stepped inside.

They asked questions. Too many questions.

About routines. About discipline. About finances. About emotional stability.

Lina answered calmly, carefully. She smiled when appropriate. She breathed when she wanted to scream.

Then one of the women glanced at the wall where the children's drawings were taped.

"Do they know their father well?" she asked.

Lina hesitated-just for half a second.

"Yes," she said. "He's involved."

"And the other... parental figure?" the woman asked. "Ms. Moore?"

Lina's throat tightened. "She's... recently become involved."

The woman scribbled something down.

That tiny motion felt louder than thunder.

Across the city, Maris Moore stood at her penthouse window, phone pressed to her ear.

"They're inside now," a voice reported.

"Good," Maris said calmly. "Let me know when they leave."

She disconnected and stared down at the city.

Lina Moore was strong.

But strength without power was still fragile.

And Maris had built her life on understanding fragility.

When the social workers finally left, Lina shut the door and leaned against it, her knees giving out. She slid to the floor, pressing a hand to her chest, struggling to breathe.

Her phone buzzed.

A new email notification.

Subject: Immediate Review Findings

Lina stared at the screen.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

She hadn't even finished reading the first line when her heart sank.

Because someone had already decided she wasn't enough.
