Chapter 6

Lina closed the folder slowly.

The sound felt too loud in the quiet office.

For a moment, she couldn't look at Adrian Hale. Her gaze stayed on the polished surface of his desk, on the sharp edges of the glass paperweight near his elbow, on anything that wasn't the proof of her own signature staring back at her from memory.

"This isn't real," she said finally.

Adrian didn't sit down.

"It is," he replied. His voice was even, controlled, but there was something tight beneath it. "Every page has been verified."

Lina lifted her head. "You're saying I agreed to be a surrogate."

"Yes."

"I didn't," she said sharply. "I went in for a scholarship screening. I asked questions. I was rushed. I was scared. I was nineteen and poor and trying to escape a house where I wasn't wanted."

Adrian's jaw flexed once.

"That doesn't change what happened."

"No," Lina said, standing. "But it changes what it means."

She took a step back from the desk, the office suddenly feeling too small, too controlled. The glass walls made her feel exposed.

"You don't get to rewrite my life because of a paperwork error," she continued, her voice shaking despite her effort to steady it. "You don't get to show me files and signatures and pretend that explains three years of my life."

Adrian studied her carefully, as if she were a problem he hadn't solved yet.

"I'm not pretending," he said. "I'm acknowledging a mistake."

"A mistake?" Lina laughed bitterly. "I was thrown out of my home. I lived in shelters. I lost my scholarship. I carried three children alone. That's not a mistake. That's a disaster."

Silence stretched between them.

Adrian gestured to the chair across from him. "Sit."

"No."

"Ms. Moore-"

"Lina," she snapped. "My name is Lina."

His eyes flickered, then he nodded once. "Lina. Sit. Please."

Against her better judgment, she did.

Adrian sat as well, folding his hands on the desk. "I won't insult you by denying the damage this caused. I won't claim it was fair. But those children-"

"Are mine," Lina said immediately.

"They are biologically mine," Adrian countered calmly.

Her hands curled into fists. "You didn't carry them. You didn't wake up sick every morning. You didn't choose between rent and groceries. You didn't hold three newborns in your arms wondering how you'd keep them alive."

Adrian's expression didn't change, but something darkened behind his eyes.

"You're right," he said. "I didn't. And I won't pretend I did."

"Then why am I here?" Lina demanded.

He exhaled slowly. "Because pretending they don't exist isn't an option anymore."

Adrian stood and walked toward the window, looking out at the city. "I built my life on control. Precision. Agreements that functioned exactly as intended. This was supposed to be clean."

He turned back to her. "It wasn't."

Lina swallowed hard. "What do you want?"

The question tasted like fear.

"I want to be part of their lives," Adrian said.

Her chest tightened painfully. "You don't get to decide that."

"I do," he replied quietly. "Legally, I have rights."

The word legally hit like a blow.

"You're threatening me," Lina said.

"I'm stating facts."

"Those facts don't include what's best for them," Lina shot back. "You don't know them. You don't know that Ethan hates loud noises. Or that Noah refuses to sleep without a nightlight. Or that Elena needs to hold someone's hand when she's scared."

Adrian's gaze didn't waver. "Then I'll learn."

"No," Lina said fiercely. "You don't get to come into their lives like a scheduled meeting."

"I'm not asking to," he said. "I'm proposing terms."

The word sent a chill through her.

"What terms?" she asked cautiously.

Adrian returned to his desk and opened another folder.

"This," he said, sliding it toward her, "is a private agreement. No courts. No publicity. No disruption to their current routine."

Lina hesitated, then opened it.

Housing support. Educational trust funds. Medical coverage. Security.

Her breath caught.

"This is-" She stopped herself. "This is buying them."

"It's protecting them," Adrian said. "From instability. From scrutiny. From a system that won't be kind if this becomes public."

Lina's eyes burned. "So that's it? You give money and suddenly you're a father?"

"No," he said quietly. "I become responsible."

"You already were," she whispered. "You just didn't know it."

Silence fell again.

"I'm not asking to take them," Adrian said at last. "Not now."

Lina looked up sharply. "Not now?"

"I want visitation," he continued. "Supervised at first. Gradual. On your terms-within reason."

Her heart hammered. "And if I say no?"

Adrian met her gaze. "Then this becomes a legal matter. One that will be far more intrusive than either of us wants."

The threat was calm. Controlled. Terrifying.

Lina closed the folder, her hands trembling.

"You'd drag us through court," she said. "Expose them."

"I'd prefer not to," Adrian replied. "That's why I'm here."

Tears pricked her eyes, hot and unwelcome. "You don't get to make this sound reasonable."

"I'm not trying to," he said. "I'm trying to make it survivable."

That evening, Lina picked up her children in silence.

At home, she moved through the routine automatically-dinner, baths, bedtime stories. Ethan fell asleep first, his small hand curled around the edge of his blanket. Noah fought sleep until the last possible second. Elena pressed her forehead against Lina's shoulder, breathing her in.

"Mommy," Elena whispered. "Are you sad?"

Lina swallowed. "A little."

"Don't be," Elena said seriously. "We're here."

Lina held her tighter.

Later, alone on the couch, Lina stared at the agreement Adrian had given her. The pages felt heavy, like they carried more than words.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

Adrian Hale: I meant what I said. I won't force this if we can find a way forward together.

Lina closed her eyes.

Together.

She typed back with shaking fingers.

Lina Moore: You don't get to hurt them. Ever. If you do, I walk-and I won't stop.

The reply came quickly.

Adrian Hale: Understood.

She set the phone down and leaned back, staring at the ceiling.

The lines had been crossed.

There was no going back.
