Chapter 1

Three days before my wedding, I was standing knee-deep in mud outside Seattle, hauling sandbags like my life depended on it.

The mudslide had taken out half a hillside neighborhood. Houses folded in on themselves. Cars buried under rivers of earth. The kind of disaster that made the news for a week and then got forgotten. I'd signed up to volunteer the second I saw the call go out. Brycen thought it was excessive—"You're getting married in seventy-two hours, Lila"—but I needed the work. The physical kind. The kind that shut my brain off.

I wore my oldest jeans and a rain jacket that had seen better days. My hands were raw inside my work gloves. Around me, volunteers shouted coordinates and dragged debris. The rain came down in sheets, cold and relentless. I liked it. It felt clean.

That's when I saw him.

Brycen. Standing near the restricted rescue zone, about fifty yards away. His arm was around someone. A woman. Small frame, dark hair plastered to her face by the rain. Kaiya Mendoza. His junior colleague. The one he always said was "struggling to keep up" at the firm.

They weren't struggling right now.

His hand rested on her lower back, fingers spread in a way that wasn't professional. She leaned into him, her face tilted up toward his. He said something I couldn't hear. She laughed. He kissed the top of her head.

I stood there holding a sandbag, water streaming down my face, and watched my fiancé comfort another woman like she was the only person in the world.

He'd told me he was in Portland. Client meeting. Back tomorrow.

I set the sandbag down carefully. My hands didn't shake. My chest didn't tighten. I just stood there, absorbing it, the way you absorb the first crack in a foundation—quiet, structural, irreversible.

No one noticed me watching. The rain was too loud. The chaos too complete.

I turned and walked back to the volunteer station. I signed out. I got in my car. I drove home in silence, wipers beating a rhythm I didn't hear.

---

That evening, I sat at my kitchen table reviewing dashcam footage.

It was part of my volunteer documentation—logging vehicle movements through the rescue zone for the coordination team. Routine work. I wasn't looking for anything.

But there it was.

Timestamp 14:37. Brycen's car, parked near the edge of the site. The camera angle caught the interior through the windshield. Brycen in the driver's seat. Kaiya beside him. Talking, leaning close, her hand on his arm.

Then kissing.

Not a peck. Not ambiguous. A kiss that meant exactly what it looked like.

I turned up the audio. The dashcam had picked up their voices through the cracked window.

"...can't keep doing this," Kaiya said. Her voice was soft, uncertain. The tone she used in meetings when she wanted someone to rescue her.

"I know." Brycen's voice. Warm, reassuring. The same voice he used with me when I was anxious about a project. "Just a little longer. The wedding changes nothing between us. You know that."

"You promise?"

"I promise."

I watched it again. Then a third time. The kiss. The promise. The tenderness in his voice—so familiar it made my stomach turn.

I closed the laptop.

I sat there for a long time. The apartment was silent except for the hum of the refrigerator and the distant sound of traffic. My hands rested flat on the table. My breathing was even.

Seven years. Seven years of drafting his blueprints, refining his presentations, believing we were building something together. Seven years of being told I was the center of his world.

The wedding changes nothing between us.

I stood up. Walked to the closet. Pulled out the garment bag.

My Vera Wang gown. Custom-fitted. Ivory silk with hand-embroidered lace. I'd spent four months on the design, working with the seamstress to get every detail right. It was supposed to be perfect.

I laid it across the dining table. Smoothed the fabric once. Then I went to my drafting desk and got my fabric scissors.

I cut through the bodice first. Clean, precise lines. Then the skirt, panel by panel. The lace separated easily. The silk made a soft tearing sound that filled the quiet apartment.

I worked methodically. No hesitation. No tears. Just the steady rhythm of destruction, the same way I'd dismantle a failed design and start over.

When I finished, the dress lay in pieces across the table like a blueprint I'd decided not to build.

I put the scissors down. Washed my hands. Made tea.

Then I called the Vasquez family.

Brycen's mother answered on the third ring. "Lila! Sweetheart, we were just talking about the seating chart—"

"The wedding is canceled," I said. My voice was calm. Even. "I'm sorry for the inconvenience."

Silence.

"What? Lila, what are you—"

"The wedding is canceled. I'll handle notifying the vendors. Thank you for everything."

I hung up before she could respond.

My phone started ringing immediately. Brycen's mother. Then his father. Then Brycen himself, three calls in a row. I turned the phone face-down and let it buzz against the table.

I was halfway through my tea when it rang again. Different number. I almost didn't answer.

But something made me pick up.

"Lila." The voice was quiet, steady. Male. "It's Conrad Burns."

I blinked. Conrad Burns. Brycen's rival since high school. The billionaire CEO who showed up at industry events and made Brycen tense just by existing. I'd met him maybe three times. We'd never exchanged more than polite small talk.

"How did you get this number?" I asked.

"That's not important." A pause. "Whatever you need. Whenever you're ready. I'm here."

I stared at the pieces of my wedding dress scattered across the table.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because you deserve better than what he gave you," Conrad said simply. "And because I've been waiting seven years to tell you that."

The line stayed open. Neither of us spoke. Outside, the rain started again, tapping against the windows.

"I don't need anything," I said finally.

"I know," Conrad said. "But when you do, call me."

He hung up.

I sat there holding the phone, staring at the dark screen, feeling something shift inside me that I couldn't name yet.

It felt like the first breath after being underwater too long.
