Chapter 5

The night before their flight, Ernesto’s tone shifted—softer, almost as if he was trying to justify himself.

“There were only five seats available for this trip,” he began, his voice low, carefully measured. “Someone needed to stay behind and take care of the house. That’s why you’re not coming along. Don’t take it the wrong way, alright? There’ll be more chances in the future. We have plenty of time.”

It sounded like comfort, but underneath his calm words lingered the same familiar superiority—as though explaining anything to me was an act of charity.

Without waiting for a response, he turned his back, closed his eyes, and ended the conversation.

I stared at the back of his head, blankly. The ache in my chest had long gone. There was no sadness left, no anger—just emptiness.

I was done believing in “next time.”

Once again, I couldn’t sleep.

By dawn, the house was buzzing with excitement. Everyone moved quickly, chattering, double-checking their luggage and documents. Their laughter filled the air—light, careless, expectant. I stood in the background, silently watching as they prepared for their long-awaited trip abroad.

I’d been up early, cooking their favorite breakfast dishes, hoping—foolishly—that someone might at least take a bite.

But no one even looked at the food.

Hans, my grandson, darted past me, eyes sparkling with thrill. “Grandma! We’re flying overseas! Who’d want your old sour bread anyway? You’re so old-fashioned!”

He laughed as if he’d said something clever. I forced a small smile, not trusting myself to reply.

They had too many bags for one car, so I offered to drive them to the airport.

When we arrived, I spotted Lydia immediately—impeccable as always. Her hair perfectly styled, her clothes tailored, her presence glowing. The moment my family saw her, their faces lit up like lights switched on.

Hans ran straight into her open arms, shrieking, “Auntie Lydia! I missed you so much!”

Ernesto’s grin stretched wide, his wrinkles deepening with every smile line. My son and daughter-in-law could barely hide their excitement.

And just like that, I realized there were two sides standing at that terminal—them, glowing and joyful, and me, the outsider who didn’t belong.

Lydia greeted everyone warmly, her voice sweet but commanding. “Let’s make sure everyone has their documents, alright? You all know how paranoid I get about losing things. Check your passports and IDs again, please!”

Even though they’d already checked everything multiple times that morning, everyone obediently rummaged through their bags again—because Lydia’s words carried weight, while mine never did.

It should have gone smoothly. Everything should have been perfect. But fate had other plans.

Hans’s passport was missing.

The instant panic struck, every head turned toward me at once—like I had suddenly materialized from the shadows.

“Mom, you packed Hans’s things, didn’t you? You said you put the passport in! Where is it now?” my son demanded.

I froze. I had packed it myself. I could still picture exactly where I’d placed it.

Before I could open my mouth, Ernesto stormed toward me, face red with fury. His hand came down hard across my cheek.

The slap rang in my ears, echoing through the terminal. Heat spread through my face, sharp and stinging.

Strangers turned to stare—eyes full of judgment and pity.

“I knew it!” Ernesto roared. “You’ve been acting so obedient lately—and now I get it! You wanted this! You wanted to ruin our trip!”

“I didn’t!” I cried out, my voice breaking. But the words fell dead in the air, crushed by his rage.

Before I could gather myself, Lydia stepped between us, her tone urgent and calm. “Now’s not the time to argue. Let’s focus. Maybe someone can go back home and find it—we still have time if we hurry.”

Then my daughter-in-law came rushing forward, guilt written all over her face. “Wait—it’s my fault! I was trying to bring breakfast, but my bag was too full, so I took some things out. I must’ve taken the passport out by mistake!”

I turned toward Ernesto, glaring, but his face remained cold—unapologetic.

“This is your fault!” I shouted, trembling. “You just had to look thoughtful and demand breakfast! None of this would’ve happened if you hadn’t pretended to care!”

Rage flooded my chest, and before I could steady myself, the world spun. My vision blurred, my knees gave way, and I crashed to the ground. The pain shot through my skull, and everything went dark.

No one came. No one even called my name.

They were already running toward the gates, leaving me there.

It was a stranger—a kind, nameless soul—who helped me up and took me to the hospital.

When I opened my eyes again, it was nearly evening. My phone buzzed with a message from my daughter-in-law.

[Mom, we couldn’t find you at the airport. We got the passports and we’re boarding now. Please don’t be angry at Dad—he was just stressed. I know it was my mistake. When we come back, I’ll bring you a present. Take care, okay?]

Tears streamed silently down my cheeks. Thirty years of sacrifice—and this was the reward.

I couldn’t keep living this way.

That night, I returned home alone. And for the first time in a long while, I slept peacefully. The ache was gone. The hope had died, but so had the pain. Once I let go, everything felt lighter.

---

The next morning, I gathered every bit of savings I’d accumulated through the years, along with the deed to the house. My name was the only one written on it.

For decades, I had worked relentlessly—running a small store, taking whatever jobs I could—while Ernesto devoted himself entirely to his “art.”

That house had been built from my sweat and sacrifices. Paid for by me.

I drove to the real estate office without hesitation and told the agent plainly, “Put it on the market. Sell it fast.”

He nodded eagerly when I agreed to a three-percent discount.

After signing the paperwork, I went home, opened my laptop, and booked a ticket. A flight that would leave in three days.

Destination: the Elontrian Countries.

It would be the first stop of my journey around the world.

For once, I wasn’t waiting for permission or approval. My new life would begin—not someday, but now.
