Chapter 5

"Are you turning my school into a courtroom now?" Logan asked, stepping between my phone and Nicole.

"I am retrieving stolen property," I said. I tapped the red square on my screen, stopping the recording. "And establishing facts."

I held out my free hand, keeping my palm flat. "The scarf. Now."

Nicole smirked. Her eyes darted toward the administrative assistant watching from the front desk, gauging her audience. "I am conducting a family stability assessment. I have every right to be here."

"Then prove it," I told her. I slid a blank piece of printer paper and a blue pen across the laminate counter. "Write down your license number. The school requires it for your file."

"Gladly," Nicole replied. She grabbed the pen and scribbled her name, followed by the exact nine-digit string she had used on the emergency contact form.

I handed the paper to the assistant. "I need a copy of this for my records."

Logan hooked his fingers under the blue wool draped around Nicole's neck. He unwound it and threw it directly at my chest.

"You really only care about winning," my son muttered.

I caught the fabric before it hit the floor. A cloying, floral perfume clung to the threads, invading my senses. My forearms went completely numb. Nine years ago, I took my mother's oval sapphire ring out of its velvet box and sold it to pay Eric's clinic debts. I kept only this scarf as a memory. I pressed my lips together and shoved the wool into my tote bag. I offered Logan zero explanations.

The administrative assistant tapped the glass partition. "Ms. Vale, district policy requires verifiable credentials within forty-eight hours. If that number does not clear the state database, your consultant access is revoked permanently."

Nicole's smile vanished. She stepped closer to me, invading my personal space.

"I will make sure everyone sees exactly who the dangerous one is," she whispered.

By eight o'clock that evening, my phone began vibrating continuously against the hotel desk.

Dana called me. "Check the community parent forum. Right now."

I opened the browser. A video titled How a Dietitian Mother Uses Health to Control Her Family sat at the top of the page. The runtime read two minutes and seventeen seconds.

"They uploaded a heavily edited clip of the intervention," Dana said through the speaker.

I clicked play. The footage opened with me demanding to know why Logan missed curfew. It cut sharply to me refusing to sign the thirty-day agreement. Eric appeared at the very end, his voice digitally enhanced to sound gentle, pleading with me to accept help. They had entirely removed Nicole's face. They cut out the fake therapy setup and the forged documents.

"Look at the comments," Dana urged.

I scrolled down. Dozens of parents were already questioning my fitness to participate in the upcoming youth wellness seminars.

An email notification popped up over the video player. The community nutrition board.

"The project board just suspended my remaining monthly contracts," I said, reading the text aloud. "They are waiting for an ethical review."

"Post a public denial," Dana ordered. "Call out the selective editing."

"No," I replied. "If I argue on a public forum, I give Nicole the unhinged reaction she needs to justify her presence in my house."

"So we do nothing? They are destroying your professional reputation."

"I am sending the complete timeline and the forged signature file directly to the project board," I said. "I won't debate a spliced video on the internet."

"You lost the contract money," Dana pointed out.

"The lost revenue covers exactly one month of rent at this suite," I said. "It hurts, but it will not force me to crawl back to Eric for financial help."

I hung up the phone and dragged the video timeline back to zero. I muted the volume. I played the footage again, examining every inch of the screen.

At the forty-two-second mark, Logan looked down at his lap.

I paused the player. I leaned closer to the monitor. Behind Eric's shoulder, the dark window glass mirrored the room. A white rectangular blur sat near the bottom edge of the frame, resting right where Nicole had been sitting during the ambush.

I advanced the video three frames. The camera shifted slightly.

The white blur sharpened into a clear cue card. Thick black marker spelled out the words food control.

I took a screenshot.

I scrubbed forward to one minute and twelve seconds. Logan glanced down again. Another reflection appeared in the glass. Privacy violation.

I took a second screenshot.

At one minute and fifty seconds, he read the final card. Ask her to leave.

His dialogue matched the cards perfectly. Nicole had fed him every single accusation.

I watched the final segment again. Right before Logan delivered the line about me moving out, he bit his lower lip. A sharp, quick bite. Five years ago, he did the exact same thing right before the physical therapist bent his shattered leg.

My chest tightened. I turned the sound completely off. I refused to let that small physical tell absolve him of what he was doing.

I dialed Dana back.

"Look at the email I just sent you," I said the second she answered.

"I am opening it now," Dana replied. "What am I looking at?"

"Frame forty-two," I instructed. "Look at the window reflection behind Eric."

"Is that a cue card?"

"Yes. It says food control," I said. "Check frame one minute and twelve seconds."

"Privacy violation," Dana read aloud.

"Logan's dialogue matches the cards perfectly," I said. "Nicole fed him the lines."

"I am sending a preservation demand to the platform's legal department," Dana said, her keyboard clacking rapidly in the background. "They cannot delete the metadata now. We have proof of coaching."

A new alert pinged on the forum tab.

"Nicole just uploaded a second clip," I said.

I clicked play. Logan sat alone at the kitchen island, bathed in the harsh overhead lights.

"My mother punishes us with food and silence," Logan said, staring straight into the lens.

Behind him, propped against the espresso machine, sat a small whiteboard titled New House Rules.

"I am sometimes afraid of her," Logan added.

My fingers slipped off the trackpad. My entire hand hovered in the air, frozen above the keyboard. I did not cry. I reached out and tapped the brightness key, turning the screen up to its maximum setting. I forced my eyes to track every single pixel of the kitchen.

Logan finished his sentence and swallowed hard.

I paused the video.

Behind him, the black glass face of the microwave served as a perfect mirror.

Nicole's reflection stood clear in the appliance door. She held up a fresh white card. Her other hand was raised, her index finger circling in the air, signaling him to repeat the line.

My phone buzzed against the desk.

Dana's name flashed on the screen.

I answered it, keeping my eyes fixed on Nicole's reflection in the microwave.

"Eric just submitted this video as new evidence," Dana said. "Tomorrow at 9 AM, we have to decide how to dismantle it."
