Chapter 3

"Leave the laptop exactly as it is," Dana instructed through the phone speaker.

I stared at the glowing PDF on my screen. "I didn't sign this. Look at the date."

"Start a screen recording right now," Dana said, her tone clipped. "Show the email headers. Show the download timestamp. Then zoom in on that ink break. Do not edit the file. Do not add a red circle. Tomorrow morning, you hand the entire device to our forensic guy."

I clicked the record button on my keyboard. I opened the scanned refinance documents from three years ago alongside the fake reset agreement. The microscopic gap in the loop of the J matched perfectly.

"The original signature is on the property confirmation," I said, keeping my voice flat. "Inside my blue folder."

"Which means someone went through your physical files," Dana replied. "Nicole needed a fake consent form to justify her presence in your house to the authorities."

My phone vibrated on the desk. An audio message from Eric.

I held the phone up to the computer microphone and hit play.

"Julia, stop overreacting," Eric's voice filled the sterile hotel room. "Nicole just filled in the missing paperwork for you. Don't criminalize a family issue."

Dana scoffed over the line. "Save that audio."

I typed my response to Eric. Are you admitting she used my old signature?

The typing bubble appeared on his end. It lingered for ten seconds, then vanished. He didn't reply.

Another text popped up, this one from Logan. Dad said you want to destroy us.

I stared at my son's name. I didn't try to explain the forgery. I didn't beg for his understanding like I would have yesterday. I tapped the screen twice.

I am stopping someone from signing for me.

I pulled the blue folder from my tote bag and spread the contents across the laminate dining table.

Twelve years ago, my mother placed the Mercer house into the Harbor Family Trust. Three years ago, during our refinance, Eric signed a notary confirmation right here on page four, legally acknowledging the house remained my separate trust property.

"The trust document stops him from claiming the house as a marital asset," Dana said. "But it doesn't automatically solve a temporary occupancy dispute in family court. Keep this card hidden. Let's see exactly how far he plans to push this."

I flipped to the back of the folder. A gap showed where my home insurance copy used to sit. Caught in the metal binding rings was a tiny, torn corner of thick cardstock.

I pinched the scrap between my fingers. It bore a teal V and part of an a. Nicole Vale's business card.

"She went through the trust files," I said, snapping a photo of the torn paper. "She left a piece of her card in the binding."

"Secure the originals," Dana ordered. "Immediately."

Forty minutes later, I stood inside the vault of First National Bank.

"Will you need to access this box frequently, Ms. Mercer?" the bank manager asked, handing me a brass key.

"No," I said, sliding the blue folder into the metal container. "I just need to ensure no one else can."

I turned the lock and slipped the key into my pocket. I only kept the certified copies for Dana. No one could destroy my ownership now, even if they broke into my hotel room.

Back at the hotel, my phone buzzed again. The three-person family chat flashed on my screen.

Nicole had sent a photo. She stood at my kitchen island, wearing my yellow striped apron, chopping bell peppers. The caption read: Day One of Peace.

A heart emoji appeared beneath it from Eric.

Logan replied ten seconds later. Finally no hospital food.

I stared at the screen. I took a screenshot, capturing the timestamp in the upper corner. She had moved in before any formal agreement existed. This wasn't a neutral intervention. It was an occupation.

An email notification chimed over the text alerts.

It came from the community nutrition board.

I clicked the subject line. Urgent: Program Suspension.

Julia, we received an anonymous complaint regarding your fitness to serve teenagers. The sender cited extreme dietary control issues within your own family. We must suspend your upcoming public lectures pending an internal review.

Two paid events this week, gone.

I opened a new spreadsheet. I titled it Damages. I logged the lost income, pasted the cancellation email, and added the anonymous complaint wording. I didn't call the board to argue. I didn't cry over the lost money. I documented the exact cost of my absence.

At six o'clock, a heavy knock rattled my hotel door.

I opened it to find a man in a gray windbreaker holding a thick manila envelope.

"Julia Mercer?" he asked, thrusting a clipboard toward me.

"Yes."

"Sign here," he said.

I signed the receipt. He shoved the envelope into my hands and walked away down the hall.

I tore the flap open. It was a temporary family court application. Eric was petitioning for thirty-day exclusive use of the residence.

I scanned the second page. Eric claimed my move to the hotel constituted voluntary abandonment of the family residence. He painted my departure as a hostile act.

Attached to the back was a document titled Family Function Assessment, authored by Nicole Vale. She declared I refused treatment and exhibited controlling behavior. No license number appeared anywhere on the page. No consent form was attached.

I dialed Dana.

"They filed for temporary exclusive use," I said the second she answered.

"I just saw it in the electronic system," Dana replied, her tone sharp. "He’s trying to establish the status quo before we can strike. The court set a temporary hearing for seventy-two hours from now."

"He used her fake assessment as evidence," I said, flipping the pages. "He attached it as Exhibit A."

"We hit them with everything at that hearing," Dana instructed. "The housing, Logan's contact schedule, and the forgery. Be ready."

She hung up.

I set the papers on the desk and opened my laptop calendar. I typed in the hearing date. A digital countdown timer sprang to life on my screen.

71:59:48.

My phone screen lit up on the nightstand. A new text from Eric.

Sign the thirty-day agreement, and I'll drop the application tonight.
