Chapter 4

I shoved the front door open and stepped into the biting night air. The heavy oak door slammed shut behind me, cutting off the muffled sound of Theo's television. My fingers clamped tight around the metal ring of my car keys, the jagged edges pressing into my palm.

I made it exactly three steps down the concrete porch before a shadow detached itself from the edge of the driveway.

"You are going the wrong way, Maren."

I stopped cold. I slid my thumb through the keyring, positioning the longest brass house key between my knuckles. A makeshift weapon.

"Step out of the dark," I demanded, keeping my distance. "Now."

The man moved into the yellow pool of the streetlamp. He wore a heavy canvas jacket and worn steel-toed work boots. He did not look like HOA security, and he definitely did not belong to Garrett's country club crowd.

"My name is Kael," he said, keeping his hands visible at his sides. "I am the new city surveyor assigned to Oak Creek."

"Surveyors do not work at midnight," I said.

"They do when the ground starts screaming," he replied.

He raised a thick, black device in his right hand. It looked like a standard laser transit, but the digital interface glowed with a harsh, pulsing green light. The screen did not show elevation grades or property line distances. It displayed a rapidly fluctuating graph of lunar phase frequencies.

The exact wavelength metrics Grandma Odette used to track the boundary wards.

My stomach dropped. I took a sharp step backward, putting the hood of my SUV between us.

"Get off my property," I said. "Before I call the police."

"You won't call the police," Kael said. "And you won't call Reggie, either. The patrolman is terrified. He won't come back to this side of the neighborhood tonight."

"How do you know about Reggie?" I asked, my grip tightening on the keys.

"I know he gave you a photograph twenty minutes ago," Kael said. He lowered the scanner, letting the green light fade against his jacket. "Blood binds the dirt. Iron holds the teeth."

The air in my lungs stalled. The old alliance phrase. The exact words Eleanor Hollis wrote on the back of the original deed a century ago.

Kael pushed up the left sleeve of his canvas jacket. He turned his wrist toward the streetlamp. A dark, jagged mark scarred the pale skin of his inner forearm. A crescent moon flanked by three sharp, intersecting lines.

The exact same crest stamped into the heavy silver seal locked in my study.

"You know what this is," Kael said, tapping the scarred tissue. "You know I am not here to plant maple trees."

I stared at his arm. For ten years, Garrett told me I was insane. For ten years, the entire neighborhood treated me like a toxic, controlling tyrant. I fought them over every inch of soil, every fence post, every dropped seed, entirely alone. I endured the rolling eyes, the whispered insults, and my own son's mockery just to keep the boundary intact.

A strange, sharp crack of relief fractured the tight wall around my chest. The isolation broke, just a fraction. Someone else saw the truth. Someone else knew the dirt was not just dirt.

But I did not drop my keys.

"Anyone can walk into a parlor and ask for a moon tattoo," I said, my voice hardening. "If you know the ward, you know the history. Who co-signed the blood pact with Eleanor?"

Kael did not hesitate. "Odette."

I searched his face. His jaw remained set, his eyes locked on mine.

"Odette Hollis," he continued, taking a slow step forward. "Your grandmother. She anchored the final stone before the sickness took her. She trusted you to hold the line."

I lowered my hand, letting the keys drop against my thigh.

"They rented a backhoe," I said, gesturing toward the end of the street. The harsh white beams of Lola's headlamps still sliced through the darkness. The distant, rhythmic thud of a pickaxe striking earth echoed across the asphalt. "Garrett approved an eight-foot excavation depth. He forged the foundation permits today."

"Lola is just the muscle," Kael said, his tone turning urgent. "She isn't acting alone, Maren. You think a random neighbor bypasses three empty lake houses to buy a crumbling corner lot and immediately starts digging exactly on the seventh coordinate? She was sent here."

"Sent by who?"

"The silver wolf matriarchy," Kael answered. "The same bloodline that broke the treaty a century ago."

"Odette said they were exiled to the northern ridges," I countered.

"They came back," Kael said. "They bought the corner lot under a shell corporation. They want the keystone destroyed. If they pull that rock out of the earth, the boundary collapses. Every shadow locked beneath Oak Creek walks free."

"Garrett is down in the hole with her right now," I said. "He is helping her tear it apart."

"He is a useful idiot to them," Kael said, shaking his head. "They need a resident's signature to bypass the municipal digging restrictions. Your husband handed them the keys to the front door."

"He filed a petition to remove me from the neighborhood council," I said, the pieces rapidly falling into place. "The vote takes effect in thirty-six hours. They are trying to strip my legal authority over the boundary lines before the moon peaks."

"They don't need thirty-six hours," Kael said. "If they have heavy machinery, they will break the anchor stone tonight."

"I told Garrett to stop," I said, my voice dropping. "I warned him."

"Ignorance does not change the outcome," Kael said. "I need the original elevation charts. I need to know exactly how deep Odette buried the iron box. If I can recalibrate the ward frequencies, I can force them out of the pit."

"I have the charts," I said.

"Then go inside and get them," Kael urged, pointing toward my front door. "We are running out of time."

I reached into my coat pocket. My fingers brushed the glossy surface of the photograph Reggie had given me. I pulled it out and held it up, keeping it just out of Kael's reach.

"We don't need the charts," I said.

Kael leaned in, his eyes darting to the grainy image. The blue-black edge of the anchor stone sat exposed at the bottom of the pit, the rusted metal lockbox wedged beneath it.

I watched Kael's expression shift. The calm, composed surveyor vanished, replaced by stark, undisguised alarm. He reached for the photo, but I snatched it back and shoved it deep into my pocket.

"You don't get the intel until I know exactly how we stop them," I said.

"You don't understand," Kael said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. He stared directly at the pocket where I hid the photo. "The keystone is exposed. The seal has one layer of dirt left—and your husband's surname, Voss, originally belonged to..."
