Chapter 1

For three years, I saved $320 a month so my son could have his first car.

I skipped lunches, worked late, and built him an insurance plan because I wanted his freedom to be safe.

At the dealership, the salesman slid the title across the desk.

My husband's coworker Vanessa was listed as co-owner instead of me.

My son Cody would not meet my eyes.

He had known for a week.

When I refused to write the check, he shoved my gray insurance binder back at me.

“Vanessa understands cars and she's willing to teach me.”

My husband opened our emergency account on his phone and paid $10,900 without asking me.

Then Cody handed Vanessa the passenger-side key.

They drove away together and left me beside the dealership's empty flagpoles, twelve miles from home.

I took the bus back.

By the time they returned, half of what remained in our joint account was gone, my documents were packed, and my wedding ring sat on the kitchen table.

“Where is she?” Cody asked.

“She'll come back,” Richard said.

Vanessa looked at the empty driveway.

“What if she doesn't?”

"I just need your signature right here on the check, Mrs. Carter," the salesman, Marcus, said. He tapped a silver pen against the $10,900 cashier's check resting on the glass desk.

I reached for the pen. As my hand moved across the desk, my knuckles brushed the official vehicle registration form lying beneath the purchase agreement.

The paper shifted.

My eyes caught the bold text printed under the co-owner line.

VANESSA PAGE.

I stopped. My fingers pressed hard against the crisp document, pinning it flat against the glass.

"Excuse me," I said, my voice dropping. "What's this?"

Marcus blinked, his professional smile faltering. "That's the title registration, ma'am."

"I can see that." I traced the printed letters of the name. "Why is this name on my son's car?"

Next to me, Richard sighed heavily. He sank deeper into the plush leather chair, crossing his arms.

"Just sign the check, Beth," Richard said. "We're holding up the line."

I ignored my estranged husband, keeping my eyes fixed on the salesman. "I'm the one funding this purchase. My name goes on the title. Or my son's name. Who authorized Vanessa Page?"

"I did."

Richard leaned forward. He didn't look guilty. He looked annoyed.

I turned to him. We had been separated for two years, but the audacity of his tone still managed to strike a nerve.

"You put your girlfriend on the title of the car I'm buying?"

"It's just paperwork, Beth," Richard muttered, adjusting his expensive watch. "Don't turn this into one of your episodes."

I slid the title completely out from under Marcus's hand. The salesman wisely took three steps back, retreating toward the coffee station.

"Episodes?" I stood up. The leather chair squeaked in protest. "For thirty-six months, I stuffed three hundred and twenty dollars into a blue envelope. I wrote CODY—CAR on the front in permanent marker."

I pulled that exact blue envelope from my purse and tossed it onto the glass desk. It landed with a soft thud next to the towering stack of dealership forms.

"Every single month," I continued, my voice steady but loud enough to turn a few heads in the showroom. "I gave up my lunch breaks. I took on extra tutoring shifts at the high school. I saved eleven thousand, five hundred and twenty dollars in that envelope, enough to bring in this check and keep a repair cushion ready."

I tapped the cashier's check. "Ten thousand nine hundred dollars for the car itself. And you secretly register it to Vanessa?"

Cody sat on the other side of Richard, staring at his sneakers. He was eighteen, a grown man by legal definition, but in that moment he shrank into the oversized collar of his gray hoodie.

"Mom, please," Cody mumbled. He didn't look up. "Don't make a scene in front of everyone."

A dry laugh escaped my throat. I wasn't crying. I was furious.

"You think I'm making a scene? I'm trying to understand why I'm paying for a vehicle that legally belongs to your father's mistress."

"She's not his mistress anymore, Mom," Cody shot back, his jaw tightening. "They live together."

The defense of the woman who wrecked our family felt like a physical slap.

"Vanessa knows cars," Richard interjected, his voice rising to regain control of the conversation. "She spent the entire weekend negotiating the trim package with the dealer. She got them to throw in the all-weather floor mats. You don't know the first thing about engine specs or drivetrain warranties."

"So she gets the legal ownership rights, and I get the bill?"

"You're his mother!" Richard slammed his hand on the armrest. "You're supposed to provide for him. Vanessa stepped up to handle the complicated logistics. You just need to handle the payment."

I looked down at the desk. Next to the blue envelope sat the thick gray binder I had spent the last three nights organizing.

I grabbed the cover and flipped it open. The metal rings snapped loudly.

"Logistics," I repeated.

I flipped to the first tab. "Page one. Twelve months of insurance quotes, cross-referenced for the best student discount. I spent four hours on the phone with three different agents."

I turned to the second tab. "Page two. A bank slip showing a twelve-hundred-dollar maintenance reserve. I set that cash aside specifically for your oil changes, tire rotations, and emergency repairs."

I flipped to the final section, my finger jabbing at the printed calendar. "Page three. A schedule blocking out twenty weekends for me to ride shotgun and help you practice highway merging before you leave for college."

I slid the open binder across the glass. It bumped into Cody's knuckles.

"Did Vanessa handle this too?" I asked.

Cody finally lifted his head. His eyes darted to Richard, seeking help, before settling on the floor again.

"I didn't ask you to make that stupid binder," Cody said.

The words hung in the air. The dealership noise—the ringing phones, the hum of the coffee machine, the chatter of other customers—faded into a dull roar.

"When did you know?" I asked.

Silence.

"Cody," I prompted, my tone hardening. "When did you find out she was going on the title?"

He rubbed the back of his neck, a nervous habit he inherited from his father. "A week ago."

A week.

Seven days.

For seven days, I had sat across from him at the dinner table, talking about insurance rates. For seven days, I had excitedly showed him the blue envelope, counting down the days until we could finally pick up his dream car.

And for seven days, he had known he and his father had already arranged to cut me out entirely.

I looked at Richard. He offered no apology, no hint of regret. He just stared back with a stern glare, demanding my compliance.

I looked at my son. The boy I had sacrificed my time, my energy, and my savings for, stood firmly on his father's side.

I reached across the glass desk.

My fingers closed over the cashier's check.

"Wait, what are you doing?" Richard demanded, sitting up straight.

I folded the heavy paper in half. The crease was sharp and exact. Then I folded it in quarters.

"Beth, stop playing games," Richard barked. "The dealer is waiting. The car is detailed and sitting in the delivery bay."

I unzipped my leather purse and dropped the folded check inside. The zipper teeth locked together with a sharp, final sound.

"I'm not signing it."

Richard stood up. His chair scraped violently against the ceramic tile. "Are you insane? We've been here for two hours!"

"Then Vanessa can pay for it," I said, my voice even.

"She doesn't have that kind of cash lying around! She just put down a deposit on our vacation!"

"That's a shame." I picked up the blue envelope and shoved it into my purse as well. "She knows so much about engine specs and floor mats. I'm sure she can figure out a financing plan."

I slung my purse strap over my shoulder and turned toward the exit.

"Mom, you can't do this!" Cody stepped directly into my path, his face flushed an angry, blotchy red.

"I just did."

"But it's my car!"

"It's Vanessa's car," I corrected. I stared directly into my son's eyes, stripping away the maternal warmth I had carried for him for eighteen years. "You two made sure of that."

Cody's hands balled into tight fists. He spun around, grabbed the gray binder off the glass desk, and gripped it so hard the plastic cover bent under his fingers.

He shoved the binder back across the desk, pushing it right into my chest.

"The only thing you're good for is paying. Why do you have to ruin even that?"
