Chapter 2

Daniel's hand hung suspended in the air, a stiff, awkward gesture aimed at empty space.

"Alaric?" Daniel forced a loud chuckle, stepping sideways to block the butler's path. "The head of the table is over here. We prepared the 1998 Bordeaux for you."

Alaric did not blink. The elderly man sidestepped my husband with the grace of a phantom, leaving Daniel talking to the polished mahogany wainscoting.

The dining room fell dead silent. The clinking of silver on porcelain ceased.

My thumb rubbed the smooth silver casing of the pocket watch hidden in my lap. The engraved E.W. felt warm against my skin.

Alaric stopped beside my chair. He ignored Daniel. He did not acknowledge Chanel, who sat frozen with a spoonful of crème brûlée halfway to her mouth.

The butler planted his feet, folded his hands over his stomach, and bent at the waist. A deep, rigid ninety-degree bow. His stark white hair gleamed under the crystal chandelier.

"Miss," Alaric said, his voice carrying the resonant authority of the estate he served. "Madam asks if you have had enough of your wandering."

A sharp gasp escaped a woman down the table.

Daniel's wine glass stopped inches from his lips, the dark red liquid tilting dangerously close to the rim.

"Miss?" Daniel echoed, his voice cracking. He marched toward us, his polished shoes scuffing the floor. "Alaric, there's been a massive misunderstanding. That's my wife. Eleanor. She isn't part of the Club. She doesn't even know what the Club is."

Alaric remained bowed. He waited for my answer.

I didn't rush to speak. My gaze drifted across the table to Chanel. Three years ago, she paraded into our home, declaring herself Daniel's true soulmate. That same week, she gifted Theo a bright orange box. A five-thousand-dollar Hermès backpack. She played the wealthy, generous aunt flawlessly. I knew the truth. Daniel had quietly drained our household emergency fund to finance that gift. I saw the bank statements. I kept quiet then to maintain peace for my son.

Peace was over.

"Stand up, Eleanor," Daniel hissed, his face flushing a deep, mottled red. "You're confusing him. Apologize to Mr. Alaric immediately."

"Apologize?" I asked, keeping my voice perfectly level.

"Yes! Get up!" Daniel slammed his free hand on the table. The silverware rattled against the plates. "You're ruining the most important night of my career! I told you to stay in the kitchen!"

I ignored his outburst. I looked down at the top of Alaric's white head.

"You can stand straight, Alaric," I said.

The butler rose smoothly, his posture rigid once more. He offered a faint, respectful nod.

"How is Grandmother?" I asked.

Four words. They landed on the Thanksgiving table heavier than a lead vault.

Daniel lowered his glass. The wine sloshed over the edge, staining his pristine white cuff, but he didn't notice. His eyes darted from my face to Alaric, then down to the ruined gray scarf sitting by my plate.

"Grandmother?" Daniel whispered. The color drained from his cheeks, leaving him a sickly, ashen gray. "Eleanor, your grandmother died in a state facility five years ago."

"No, Daniel," I replied. "The woman you visited exactly once in fifteen years was my childhood nanny. I paid for her care."

Daniel stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish. He had spent the last three months obsessing over the Club's founding registry. He studied the lineage, the holdings, the untouchable wealth of the family that controlled the city's real estate. He knew the matriarch was notoriously ruthless. He knew the sole heir was listed only by initials.

"E.W.," Daniel muttered, his jaw slackening. He stumbled back a step. "Eleanor... Whitmore."

"You didn't know?" an older investor whispered from the far end of the table. "I thought you married her for the connections."

"Shut up!" Daniel snapped, though his voice lacked any real bite. He leaned heavily against the back of his chair, gripping the wood like a lifeline. "Eleanor, what kind of sick joke is this?"

"Do I look like I'm joking, Daniel?" I pulled my hand from beneath the tablecloth and placed the silver pocket watch next to my plate. The heavy metal clunked against the wood.

Chanel's manicured fingers trembled violently. The silver dessert fork slipped from her grasp.

Clang.

The sharp sound of metal striking porcelain echoed through the quiet room. She stared at the watch, her carefully constructed smile vanishing entirely.

"She's lying, Daniel," Chanel said, her voice high and thin. She pointed a shaking acrylic nail at me. "Look at her clothes. Look at her raw hands. Whitmore heirs don't knit cheap wool scarves. This is a pathetic stunt!"

"True wealth doesn't need to wear Hermès to prove it exists, Chanel," I said. "And true wealth certainly doesn't embezzle household funds to buy a backpack for a teenager."

Chanel flinched as if I had slapped her.

Theo gripped the edges of his orange box, his eyes wide as he looked at me. "Mom? You really know this guy?"

"Mr. Alaric manages my family's estate, Theo," I told him gently.

Daniel wiped a bead of sweat from his temple. "Your family... Eleanor, you told me your family cut you off. You said you had nothing."

"I said I left with nothing," I corrected, shifting my gaze back to my husband. "There is a massive difference."

"But the mortgage," Daniel stammered, pointing a shaking finger at me. "The 1.2 million for my startup. You got that from selling a rundown property."

"I got that from mortgaging a single guest house on the Whitmore compound," I said. "A property Grandmother put in my name when I was ten years old."

Daniel grabbed the edge of the table. His knuckles turned stark white. The man who had spent the entire evening preening and boasting now looked physically ill.

"You let me beg," Daniel said, his voice rising in panic. "I spent months trying to get a meeting with the Whitmore trust! I bought horses! I took equestrian classes! I humiliated myself trying to impress them!"

"And you paraded your mistress in my home," I added, gesturing to Chanel. "You belittled the scarf I made for our son. You told me my presence embarrassed you."

A venture capitalist at the far end of the table abruptly pushed his chair back. He tossed his linen napkin onto his half-eaten turkey.

"Excuse me," the investor muttered. "I think my wife and I should leave."

"No, sit down, Tom," Daniel pleaded, rushing toward the man. He reached out, trying to press a hand on the investor's shoulder. "This is just a misunderstanding. My wife loves playing games. We will sort this out."

"Take your hand off me, Daniel," Tom said, violently shrugging away. "If she is E.W., you just insulted the biggest equity holder in the state. I am not losing my firm's backing because you can't treat your wife with respect."

Daniel froze, his arm suspended in the air once again. He looked around the table. The polite, restrained smiles from earlier were gone. The old-money guests he had spent six months courting were staring at him with open disgust.

Chanel stood up, the wooden legs of her chair scraping harshly against the floor. "Daniel, do something! She's making us look like fools."

"Quiet!" Daniel barked at her. He turned back to Alaric, forcing a desperate, sickeningly sweet smile. "Alaric. Sir. Please tell Madam Whitmore that Eleanor and I are incredibly happy. This is just a domestic spat. We are a strong, united family. I am honored to be part of the Whitmore legacy."

Alaric adjusted his cuffs. He did not spare Daniel a single glance.

The butler turned his attention to the rest of the dining room. He looked at the wealthy investors, the silent socialites, and finally, Chanel.

Alaric straightened his spine, scanning the pale faces surrounding the feast.

"Furthermore," Alaric said slowly, his voice cutting through the stale air, "Madam asked me to pass a message to this household."
