They Fed Me Scraps, I Built Millions Novel Cover

They Fed Me Scraps, I Built Millions

Exhausted from a grueling summer job, the protagonist returns daily to cold, meatless leftovers, sleeping on an empty stomach. When they ask to stop saving food, their mother ignores the plea. The painful truth emerges during a family meal: they are blocked from eating fresh food, which is reserved for their sister, while the rest of the family defends the unfair treatment. Instead of starting a fight, they find solace in their silent escape plan—a college in San Francisco, far away from home.

Chapter 4

From that day on, my family and I ran like two separate rivers. Everyone acted as if I wasn't there.

If anything, it made things easier for me. When I came home, there was no stack of dishes waiting to be washed. All I had to do was take care of myself.

Without me holding it together, the house wasn't as smooth as it used to be.

My mother sprained her wrist once, and out of habit she left the dishes sitting on the table.

That was how it had always gone. Someone who couldn't stand the sight of it would eventually clear it away, and that someone had always been me.

I used to feel sorry for my mother. I kept thinking that every extra thing I did was one less thing she had to.

But later, little by little, she started treating certain chores as simply mine to do.

So this time I did what they did. I acted as if I hadn't seen a thing.

That batch of dishes sat in the sink from that evening straight through to noon the next day.

Michael finally couldn't stand it. He turned to our mother and said, "Mom, can't you wash those already? The whole kitchen stinks."

She pressed a hand to the wrist wrapped in a medicated patch, hesitated, then said nothing.

In the end she went, embarrassed, and washed every dish.

And my father finally came to me on the first day after my summer job ended.

At home he had always been the stern head of the household. This was the first time he had ever backed down to break the ice with one of his children.

Something in me that had already hardened started to loosen, just a little.

My tone wasn't as cold either. I only asked, mildly, "Is there something you need?"

He pinched the bridge of his nose. "You made ten thousand working these two months of summer, didn't you? Times are hard right now, and the things your sister and brother want are pretty expensive. Put that money up first. Consider it your dad borrowing from you."

In that instant it was as if I'd dropped into a pit of ice.

Then, suddenly, I laughed. So the budget for back-to-school gifts was ten thousand.

Not because Mom and Dad had set aside ten thousand. Because I had earned ten thousand.

When I spoke again my voice came out rough. "Didn't you tell me I'd have to figure out my own living expenses in college?"

His eyes went blank for a moment, as if he'd only just remembered. "Oh, didn't you apply to the college near home? You can just commute, so you won't need any living expenses. From now on the family will remember to save food for you."

Save food. Those two words drove straight into the sore place, and my eyes went frighteningly hot. The next moment the tears fell.

His face darkened at once. "Fine. I don't need your money. When their parents actually need something, they really can't count on you."

With that he turned and walked out.

He didn't ask whether standing twelve hours a day left me worn out.

He didn't ask why I hadn't eaten at home these past days.

Ignoring me the way he always had, and still expecting me to give to this family.

That night I left no note for anyone, said nothing to anyone.

I just picked up a very light suitcase and walked out the door, off to a life that belonged to me.

There I would never have to eat anyone's leftovers again, and never have to clear up after a single table.

This wasn't a fit of temper, a storming off. After eighteen years of being overlooked, I had finally found my way back to myself.

The first day after I left, the house was as calm as ever.

Only sometimes my mother would sit there, staring, holding the wrist that still hadn't healed.

The second day after I left, Maya noticed something was off and brought me up at the table on her own.

"Sis, how come I haven't seen her around lately?"

Before my mother could answer, my father spoke first. "Just eat. She can do whatever she wants."

My mother started to say something several times, then in the end lowered her head and picked at the rice in her bowl.

And when the day of my freshman enrollment finally arrived, my mother seemed to find her excuse to break the ice.

For once she lowered herself and opened my door, meaning to come and mend things between us.

"You've thrown your little tantrum long enough by now, haven't you?"

She pushed the door open, and the moment she took in the room, the color drained from her face. She screamed.
