Chapter 3

A streak of raw egg yolk dripped down the dirty hallway window of my old pre-war apartment building.

Someone had smeared red spray paint across my front door: *CHILD ABUSER.*

I hauled my solitary suitcase into the musty living room and kicked the warped floorboards until the deadbolt snapped shut. The place smelled of stale radiator grease and damp carpet.

My phone vibrated against my hip. Then it buzzed again. And again.

*Die, you miserable bitch.*

*We know where you sleep.*

They had leaked my address three hours after I walked away from Graham’s house. I sat down on the edge of the bare mattress, elbows on my knees, staring at the gray wallpaper.

By noon, I was at the school district IT annex downtown.

"The footage is gone, Mrs. Morris," the technician said, barely glancing up from his dual monitors. He clicked his plastic pen incessantly. "Third-floor corridor server got wiped during routine maintenance last night."

"Routine maintenance doesn't scrub twenty-four hours of security logs," I argued, leaning over the low counter. "Someone manually overwrote that block."

"Look, lady, talk to Principal Vance. I just pull the drive tickets."

"He won't answer my calls."

A dark shadow fell over the counter. A tall silhouette stepped up beside me, dropping a black leather portfolio onto the desk with a firm clap.

"Pull the off-site cloud mirrors," Adrian Locke said.

The technician froze, squinting up at Adrian’s tailored navy suit before his jaw dropped. "Mr. Locke? I don't have authorization—"

"You do now. I hold three municipal infrastructure bonds tied to your district's hardware budget. Unlock the remote backup log."

The clerk swallowed hard, fingers flying across his keyboard without another syllable.

"Come outside," Adrian murmured to me, gently gripping my elbow. "Let him dig. You haven't eaten."

We sat in the leather interior of his sedan parked near the district curb. Raindrops beat against the tinted glass. He handed me a paper cup of black coffee from a nearby roaster, the steam warming my cold fingers.

"Drink," he ordered softly.

I wrapped both hands around the cup. "I don't think they'll find anything on those drives."

"They won't," Adrian agreed, opening his tablet. "Because the video didn't come from the school's security array."

I glanced at him. "What?"

"Look at the angle," he said, turning the bright screen toward me. "The surveillance cameras at Oakridge Elementary are mounted eight feet above the floor and angled downward. This viral clip? It was shot from roughly five feet off the floor. Handheld. Tucked behind the science display case."

The video looped silently on the glass.

My breath stopped as I watched the grain. "Harper..."

"Tell me what actually happened in that hallway, Nora."

"Harper was cornering a boy from the subsidized lunch program," I said, my voice tightening. "Leo Miller. She took his winter gloves and dropped them into a mop bucket. She was laughing in his face, telling him his mother dug through dumpsters for his clothes."

"And you stepped in?"

"I told her that behavior had zero tolerance in my hallway. I reached out to take Leo’s damp jacket so he could dry off in the nurse's station. Harper threw a tantrum. She stomped backward, kicked over a metal study chair, and lost her balance."

Adrian zoomed in on the bottom edge of the frame. "Here. Your fingers caught her sleeve."

"I caught her before she smashed her temple against the radiator corner," I whispered, the absurdity of it threatening to snap my composure. "Sienna cropped out Leo completely. She cropped out the fallen chair. She clipped it right at the moment my hand gripped Harper's arm, making it look like I shoved her down."

"It came directly from Sienna’s personal email account," Adrian said, swiping to a forensic metadata report. "Sent to three local tabloids at four in the morning."

I lowered the coffee cup, my chest heavy. "Why? Why go this far?"

"Because your husband needs an airtight moral defense," Adrian said bluntly. "He's angling for sole custody and an uncontested clean break."

My phone rang. The screen flashed my father's contact photo.

I hit accept. Before I could utter a greeting, the harsh sound of Graham's voice echoed through the speaker. He was on a live television broadcast playing on my parents' television set.

*“—deeply troubled by Nora’s erratic behavior,”* Graham was telling an evening anchor, his voice trembling with rehearsed grief. *“She harbored an unhealthy, obsessive resentment toward my sister-in-law for years. We tried to get her help. But yesterday, her anger turned dangerous.”*

"Dad?" I said into the receiver. "Dad, turn that off. Listen to me—"

"I don't need to listen to you, Nora," Dad's gravelly tone cut like rusted wire. "Your mother hasn't stopped sobbing since lunch. Harper is having nightmares."

"It's a manufactured lie! Sienna staged it!"

The line went dead.

I didn't think. I thrust the car door open.

"Nora, wait," Adrian called out.

"I have to look them in the eye," I said, the words tearing raw from my throat. "I have to know."

He didn't argue. He slid the car into drive and navigated the rainy avenues to my parents' suburban driveway in silence.

I stormed up the flagstone walk, pushing the front door open without knocking. The chime jingled cheerfully.

Inside the familiar, suffocating warmth of the house, my mother sat on the floral sofa clutching a damp washcloth. My father stood by the mantle, arms folded like a judge.

"Look at the file!" I yelled, throwing Adrian's printouts onto the glass coffee table. "Look at the timestamps! Sienna was standing ten feet away filming her own daughter, waiting for an excuse to tear my career apart! She and Graham are sleeping together!"

My mother flinched, but she didn't look down at the papers. She didn't even glance at the proof.

Instead, fresh tears pooled in her wrinkled eyes.

"Sienna has always been more fragile than you, Nora," Mom sobbed, pressing the cloth against her nose. "She was born sickly. She struggled through her marriage. She said some bitter things out of hurt pride, but why can't you just let it go? Why can't you ever yield to your sister?"

The words hung in the air, cold and deadly.

My father looked away, scowling at the rug. "You always had to be the tough one, Nora. You're making a spectacle out of our family over a school squabble."

A bitter, dry sound left my throat. A laugh.

"You know," I said, the realization settling into my bones like lead. "You already knew. Both of you."

"Don't talk to your parents like that," Dad grunted.

"You knew she made it up," I continued, backing toward the foyer. "You knew Graham was sleeping with her. And you still threw me away because you'd rather destroy my life than admit your precious Sienna is a liar."

I turned my back on them and walked out the door, ignoring my mother's weak wails behind me.

Rain pelted my cheeks as I reached Adrian’s waiting car. I climbed into the passenger seat, my breathing ragged, my hands curled into fists against my denim knees.

Adrian handed me a fresh paper napkin. He started the engine, pulling away from the curb. As the car rolled through the dark streets, he kept talking—about district legal precedents, about licensing arbitration dates, about the mechanics of subpoenaing server logs. Anything to keep the silence from dragging me under.

"Why are you doing this, Adrian?" I interrupted, staring at his strong profile in the glow of the dashboard. "I'm a suspended public school teacher with a ruined name. Graham told me he'd sue you for alienation of affection if you spoke to me. Why risk your capital firm for this?"

Adrian kept his eyes on the wet asphalt ahead, his hands steady on the steering wheel.

"Because three years ago, Graham pitched me the architecture for his company's core data platform," Adrian said, his voice deep and deliberate. "He claimed he engineered it from scratch."

I frowned, confused. "He told me you loved the prototype."

"I reviewed the code revisions and the operational white paper," Adrian said, turning his head to look directly into my eyes as the car stopped at a red light. "Graham couldn't answer a single technical inquiry about the algorithmic framework. Because he didn't write it. At least half of that foundational plan was drafted in your handwriting, Nora. He built his empire on your labor. I don't partner with thieves."

The light flicked green. The car surged forward into the dark night.

Across the city, high above the river in the penthouse suite of the Grand Metropolitan, Malcolm entered through the double mahogany doors.

His personal assistant stepped forward immediately, taking his drenched trench coat and handing him a thick, bound dossier.

"Everything has been compiled, sir," the assistant reported briskly. "Just as you instructed during your flight."

Malcolm sat behind the wide desk and flipped open the heavy folder.

Inside were full-color printouts:

Timestamped surveillance stills of Graham and Sienna entering The Starlight Inn.

Encrypted chat transcripts recovered from private cloud accounts.

Bank ledgers showing seven hundred thousand dollars of marital funds diverted directly to Graham’s corporate seed accounts.

And the email chains proving Graham had coordinated with publicists to circulate the edited school clip.

Malcolm’s jaw tightened as his eyes scanned the final page.

He closed the folder with a sharp, heavy snap.

"Have the entire evidentiary package duplicated," Malcolm said, his voice lethal and low. "I want every single one of them."
