Chapter 1

Rain soaked straight through my coat, plastering the wet wool to my skin. I tucked the white bakery box against my chest to shield it, my other hand wrestling the front door key into the lock. White chalk dust from fifth-period math still stained my cuffs.

I turned the knob, breathless.

"Ethan! Happy birthday, sweet—"

A hand cracked across my cheek.

The blow threw my head sideways. My teeth caught the inside of my lip, the metallic taste of blood bursting across my tongue. The bakery box flew from my grip. It slammed into the hardwood floor, splitting open as layers of rich chocolate fudge and buttercream smashed into a brown, ruined heap.

My ears rang. I pressed a shaking hand to my stinging cheek and looked up.

Graham stood over me, his chest heaving under his pressed dress shirt.

"How long are you going to keep humiliating Sienna?" he demanded, his voice trembling with fury.

"What?" I gasped, steadying myself against the entryway console. "Graham, what are you talking about?"

"Ask yourself, Nora."

From behind the living room sofa, eight-year-old Ethan peeked out. He didn’t run to me. His eyes were cold, narrowed in disgust.

"Ethan," I whispered, reaching toward him. "Baby, look, I brought your favorite chocolate—"

"Mom, you’re a liar," Ethan spat. "You made Aunt Sienna cry."

The words hit harder than Graham’s palm.

"Ethan, stop," I pleaded, stepping forward. "I didn't do anything to your aunt. I came straight from the school parent conferences—"

"Shut up, Nora!" Graham stepped directly onto the cake, his leather sole grinding the chocolate sponge and Ethan's sugar-lettered name into the floorboards. "Just shut your mouth! The whole city knows what you did!"

"Knows what?!" I shouted, tears stinging my eyes. "What did I do?!"

"Your principal called an hour ago," Graham snarled. "You're suspended. Indefinitely. Pending a board inquiry."

My stomach plummeted. "Suspended? For what?!"

"Check the internet, you psycho," Graham said, his lip curling. "Look at what you did to Harper."

My fingers fumbled into my wet coat pocket, pulling out my phone. Before I could unlock the screen, Graham lunged forward and snatched it from my hands.

"Hey! Give that back!"

"No," Graham snapped, shoving my phone into his back pocket. "You don't get to delete anything."

"Graham, let me see it!"

His phone buzzed loudly on the kitchen island. He tapped the icon without looking.

"Graham?" My mother’s frantic voice filled the foyer. "Is she there? Did Nora come home?"

"She's right here, Evelyn," Graham answered, glaring at me.

"Mom?" I called out, my voice cracking. "Mom, please tell me what’s happening."

"How could you, Nora?!" my mother wept through the speaker. "Harper is nine years old! She's your sister's only child! Sienna has been sobbing in my living room for two hours!"

"What did I do to Harper?!" I cried. "I was on hall duty! Harper was running toward the boiler room stairs, shoving another kid toward the metal radiator! I grabbed her arm to keep her from cracking her skull!"

"That's not what the video shows," my father’s gruff voice cut in.

"What video?!"

"Someone filmed you from the classroom doorway," Dad said coldly. "You cornered Harper. You screamed in her face until she dropped her backpack, and then you shoved her into the lockers. It’s on every local news feed. They’re calling you a monster. Parents are demanding your teaching license."

"It's edited!" Panic clawed at my throat. "Dad, listen to me! Harper tripped over her own shoelace when I caught her sleeve! Why would I shove my own niece?!"

"Sienna has had it hard enough with all the trouble in her marriage," my mother cried, her voice sharpening with venom. "She’s fragile, Nora! She sacrificed everything, and you’ve always been jealous of her! Why couldn't you just yield to her for once? Why do you always have to destroy whatever peace she finds?"

"Jealous of her?" A hysterical laugh ripped out of me. "I paid her rent last month! I bought Harper's school supplies!"

"Don't yell at your mother," Graham barked.

"Evelyn," Graham said into the phone, his tone instantly softening into something tender and protective. "Don't upset yourself. I'm taking Ethan out for dinner. We won't stay in this house tonight."

"Take care of my grandson, Graham," my mother sniffled. "Thank God he has you."

The call ended.

Graham grabbed his coat from the rack. "Come on, Ethan. Grab your jacket."

"Graham, wait!" I stepped in front of the door, desperate. "It's Ethan's birthday cake! I stood in line in the rain for forty minutes at the bakery he likes—"

"I don't want your cake," Ethan muttered. He walked past me without brushing against my wet coat, staring at the floor like I was a stranger who smelled bad. "Aunt Sienna already bought me cake. Real ones."

"Ethan..."

Graham shoved my shoulder aside with his forearm, opening the front door. "Don't call me. Don't call your sister. Just stay here and think about what you’ve ruined."

The heavy oak door slammed shut. The latch clicked into place.

Silence dropped over the house, suffocating and thick.

My knees gave out. I hit the hardwood floor, landing right in the middle of the crushed chocolate frosting. Brown smudges smeared over my trousers and soaked into my palms.

For two hours, I didn't move. I sat there in the puddle of ruined cake, listening to the rain beat against the front window.

Eventually, the chill in the air stiffened my joints.

"Get up," I whispered to the empty room. "Clean it up."

I dragged myself to the kitchen, grabbed a bucket, a sponge, and a roll of paper towels. On my hands and knees, I wiped Ethan's ruined birthday off the floorboards. Every swipe of the sponge lifted chunks of sweet chocolate that now smelled like vinegar and ash in my nose.

As I tossed a handful of soiled paper towels toward the kitchen trash, a blue glow caught my eye.

Graham’s personal phone sat on the edge of the granite island, plugged into the charger. He had taken my phone, but in his rush to comfort Ethan and Sienna, he’d forgotten his own.

A notification banner popped up on the screen.

*Sienna: If you had dumped Nora earlier, we’d be married by now.*

My breath stopped.

I pushed off the floor, my wet, frosting-stained hands trembling as I reached for the glass screen.

The device was unlocked.

I tapped the banner. The message thread opened instantly.

Right above Sienna's text was Graham’s reply, sent barely fifteen minutes ago from his car:

*Graham: I never stopped loving you. Tonight, usual place. Leave the children with their grandmother.*

Underneath his reply was an attached pin: *The Starlight Inn, Room 312.*

My vision blurred. A loud roaring rushed through my ears, drowning out the drumming rain.

My husband of eleven years.

My sister.

While the whole town burned my reputation to the ground, while my son called me a liar, while my parents cursed my existence to protect poor, fragile Sienna—

Graham was going to meet her in a motel.

I dropped the sponge into the bucket with a heavy splash. I didn't wash the frosting from my clothes.

Two hours later, I picked up Graham’s car keys from the bowl by the door, walked out into the pouring rain, and drove.

The Starlight Inn was a faded two-story motel tucked behind a highway exit. Neon blue light buzzed through the sheets of rain outside.

I walked up the exterior concrete stairs, my soaked sneakers squelching against the gritty surface. Room 312 sat at the end of the walkway, the yellow porch bulb humming faintly.

I raised my fist to pound on the wood.

Then I heard it.

A high, breathless giggle drifted through the thin gap beneath the weatherstripping.

"Graham... stop, your hands are freezing," Sienna’s voice purred, melodic and light, entirely free of tears. "Did she really think anyone would believe her over me?"

"Nobody cares what she says," Graham’s voice answered from inside, low and thick with a sound I hadn't heard from him in years. "Ethan hates her now. It’s over for her, Sienna. Come here."
