Chapter 2

"Sign the behavior agreement, Mrs. Gray," Principal Elaine Patrice said, sliding a one-page form across the conference table. "If you refuse to acknowledge Toby's aggression, refusal to share, and repeated disruption of other students, Arbor Crest may terminate his enrollment today."

I did not touch the pen.

Instead, I opened a small envelope and placed nine red stickers in a neat row between us. I had peeled them from Toby's shirt after his bath, one by one, while he explained what he thought he had done to earn each one.

"Explain these."

Lacey shifted beside the principal. "Behavior reminders. For growling, refusing to surrender shared items, arguing about seating, and making classmates uncomfortable with his odor."

Toby sat beside me with both hands wrapped around the straps of his backpack.

"I thought red meant I was adapting fast," he said. "You smiled every time you put one on me, Miss Lacey."

The teacher looked away.

"What items did he refuse to surrender?" I asked.

"Hudson wanted to examine his lunchbox, the stuffed wolf, and that braided bracelet. Toby became possessive."

Toby frowned. "I am learning sharing, Mommy. Yesterday Hudson shared my whole lunch with himself."

Silence stretched across the room.

My fingers curled under the table.

"How many times was his food taken?"

Lacey hesitated. "Three, perhaps."

"His shoes?"

"There were a few incidents."

"Four," Toby supplied. "But I got faster at treasure hunts."

I looked at Patrice. "And the seating complaints?"

Lacey answered before the principal could. "I moved him to a separate desk because the other children needed space."

"My special wolf seat," Toby said proudly. "It faces the wall, so nobody gets distracted by me."

The pride in his voice hurt more than tears would have.

"And the odor?"

"Several children covered their noses," Lacey said. "I asked him to wash his hands after recess. That's basic hygiene."

Last night, Toby had scrubbed his knuckles until they were raw because he thought soap could make people like him.

"How long did you make him wash?"

Lacey's mouth tightened. "I did not time him."

"I counted to two hundred," Toby said. "Then Hudson said I still smelled like a dog, so I did it again."

Patrice tapped her pen against the unsigned agreement. "Mrs. Gray, ordinary social friction can become a major problem when a child's home environment does not reinforce appropriate behavior. Our records indicate that you are unemployed. Is that correct?"

Toby sat straighter, eager to help.

"Mommy stays home with me. She also makes grown men fall down, but Daddy says that is training, not a job."

I bit the inside of my cheek.

Five years earlier, before Toby was born, I had dropped Blackridge's future Alpha onto the training mat so many times Dorian finally stopped assuming his mate would stay behind him in a fight.

Patrice wrote unemployed mother on her notepad.

"And your husband? He has never attended pickup."

"Daddy works at night sometimes," Toby said. "Sometimes there is blood on his shirt, but he says not to touch it until Mommy says it is clean."

Bianca, who had insisted on attending as Hudson's parent representative, made a horrified sound.

"Blood? Violence?" she said. "This is exactly what I told you, Elaine. That child's aggression comes from home."

I wanted to let my Luna aura fill the room until Bianca understood exactly what helpless felt like.

I did not.

The wolf scent at yesterday's curb had changed everything. If a Red Hollow scout was watching Arbor Crest, exposing our identities in a room full of cameras could turn Toby into a target before our guards found the watcher.

"I want the cloud backups of the playground cameras," I said. "And the visitor log from yesterday afternoon."

Patrice shut the folder. "School privacy policy does not permit parents unrestricted access to security footage."

"I did not ask for unrestricted access. I asked you to preserve evidence involving my child."

"And I am telling you the school will follow its procedures."

I took out my phone beneath the table.

Gideon Vale was Blackridge's general counsel, and the Vale Foundation had funded Arbor Crest's new security wing two years ago. More importantly, he knew every shell company and donor agreement connected to the school.

Tomorrow morning. Arbor Crest. Come alone. Do not use my title unless I tell you.

I sent the message.

Then I stood.

"This meeting is over for now."

Patrice pushed the behavior agreement toward me again. "Toby must complete a half-day classroom observation before we can close the incident review. If there is another violent episode, he will be removed."

Every instinct in me said to take my son and never cross the threshold again.

But if I pulled him out before Gideon secured the servers, Patrice could erase the very evidence Toby needed to understand that none of this had been his fault. I would stay in the building. I would be less than a minute away.

I crouched in front of Toby and straightened his collar.

"I will be in reception. You do not have to give anyone your things. If you are scared or someone tells you to keep a secret from me, you come straight back."

Toby nodded. "No fake sharing."

"Exactly."

He took Lacey's hand and disappeared down the hall.

I sat on the green velvet sofa facing the reception desk and watched the clock.

Eighteen minutes later, a child's scream cut through the west corridor.

My phone buzzed.

An automated alert filled the screen.

Your child has been moved to the Quiet Room for safety regulation.

I was running before I finished reading.

At the end of the corridor, Hudson stood outside the classroom swinging the broken halves of Toby's moonstone cord around one finger.

Lacey blocked a heavy wooden door with a narrow glass panel. Two teaching assistants stood beside her, both pale.

"He snapped," Lacey said. "He started growling and shaking. We had to isolate him before he hurt someone."

I looked through the glass.

Toby was not attacking anyone.

He was curled in the far corner of the padded room with his knees to his chest, rocking gently as he whispered the counting exercise I had taught him to control an involuntary shift.

One, two, three, breathe.

One, two, three, breathe.

His eyes lifted toward me.

Warm brown bled into bright, dangerous silver.

"Do not go in," Lacey warned. "He is highly overstimulated. We cannot risk him hurting staff."

I turned to her.

For the first time since we entered Arbor Crest, I stopped pretending to be completely human.

A thin edge of Luna power slipped free.

The hallway went cold.

"Open that door."
