Chapter 3

The guards closed in, heavy footsteps thudding against the carpeted runner.

"Wait, John."

Eira's soft voice sliced across the tension. She laid three manicured fingers against his arm, her expression carved into gentle concern.

"What now, Eira?" John bit out, his jaw knotted tight.

"What if she's telling the truth?" Eira tilted her head toward the crowd, pitching her voice so the nearby guests caught every word. "What if someone really broke into the suite? If we throw Ellie out without checking, the press will say you were reckless and cruel."

John's brow twitched. "You think I should indulge this fantasy?"

"I think you should see it with your own eyes," Eira murmured, squeezing his sleeve. "It takes two minutes. If the dress is destroyed like she swears, you have your answer. And if it isn't..." She left the sentence hanging, a sad sigh parting her lips.

Marcus waved a dismissive hand from behind John. "Don't waste your time on her nonsense, son."

"No," John muttered, his glare raking over my champagne-soaked clothes. "Let's go look. If you dragged my name through the mud over a fabrication, Elowen, you won't walk out of this parish in one piece."

"Fine," I shot back, rubbing my bruised knee as I stood tall. "Come see it. Look at the blade marks yourself."

Relief flared through my ribs, hot and sharp.

The shredded boning was still there. The severed silk ribbons were still strewn over the vanity rug. The crushed pearls were scattered across the floor like broken glass. One look at that mangled six-figure mess, and John would realize someone had orchestrated every second of this nightmare.

"Lead the way," John commanded, shoving past me toward the east hallway.

Eira followed right at his elbow, her emerald train gliding across the marble. I kept pace, wet champagne chilling my neck, but my spine was straight. The evidence was waiting behind that suite door.

We cut through the cloistered corridor away from the sanctuary murmurs. John stopped outside the heavy double doors of the private bridal dressing suite.

"Open it," he ordered.

"Open it yourself," I answered, stepping beside him. "See what someone did to my wedding day."

John grabbed the brass handles and yanked both doors wide.

The air rushed out of my lungs.

"What... what is this?" The whisper scratched out of my throat.

The bridal suite was spotless.

Sunlight poured through the stained-glass transom, washing over pristine hardwood. In the center of the room, mounted on the velvet dress mannequin, hung the custom ivory gown.

Every stitch was immaculate.

The micro-pearls caught the light in unbroken, gleaming rows along the corset. The lace fell in crisp, structured layers down to the hem without a single snag. There were no blade gashes. No severed threads. No shredded tulle spilling across the parquet floor.

The vanity table was clear. The rug was completely clean.

Not a single broken pearl remained.

"Where is it?" I stumbled forward, my sneakers squeaking against the polished floor. "Where are the scraps? Where did the cuts go?"

I reached out with shaking fingers, clutching the skirt's hem. The silk was smooth, cool, and whole.

"This isn't real," I gasped, spinning around to face the empty corners. "Someone swapped it. Someone cleaned up the floor! The boning was snapped in half an hour ago!"

"Shut up," John's voice came from the threshold, low and vibrating with raw fury.

He took two strides across the rug, closing the distance between us. His face was twisted, veins pulsing at his temples.

"John, look at me!" I cried out, stepping away from the mannequin. "Someone brought a duplicate! They hid the ruined one! Check the trash cans, check the laundry chute—"

*Crack.*

His open palm cracked across my left cheek with brutal, staggering force.

The blow whipped my head to the side. Pain exploded through my cheekbone, hot and ringing. My balance gave out, and I slammed against the edge of the vanity, knocking a crystal perfume bottle onto the floor.

"You filthy, lying bitch," John spat, standing over me with his fists clenched.

Tears sprang to my eyes from the raw sting on my skin, but I forced my head up. The metallic taste of blood touched my tongue where my inner lip had caught against my teeth.

"I am not lying," I said, every word shaking with outrage. "I saw it shredded with my own eyes!"

"It's hanging right there!" John roared, pointing an accusing finger at the gown. "Unbroken! Untouched! Hand-beaded for six months by four separate ateliers!"

"Someone set this up to frame me!"

"You think someone magically summoned a second one-of-a-kind custom gown in thirty minutes?" John sneered, leaning down until his spit flecked my forehead. "You think someone broke in, vacuumed the floor, and replaced it just to spite you?"

"Yes!" I shouted back. "Look at the timing! Look at the empty pews!"

"You never wanted to marry me," John snarled, disgust curling his mouth. "You wanted the money, you wanted the status, but when it came time to step up in front of the press, your gutter blood showed through. You panicked, threw on dirty rags, and made up an insane story to cover your cowardice!"

"Ellie..."

Eira walked into the room, pressing both hands against her collarbones. Her eyes were rimmed with theatrical moisture, swimming with sorrow.

"Why would you do this?" Eira asked, her voice cracking as she stared at me with crushed disappointment. "Why would you lie about something so sacred?"

"Eira, stop playing games," I gasped, holding my throbbing cheek. "You were here this morning!"

"I was helping the florists in the main hall," Eira replied quickly, stepping closer to John's side. "I believed you when you said it was ruined. I defended you out there! I told John to give you a chance! But to see this... to see you fabricate such an ugly, twisted lie just to humiliate him on national television..."

She buried her face against John's shoulder, letting out a small, choked sob.

"I trusted you, Ellie," Eira wept softly into his lapel. "How could you be so cruel to the man who saved you from nothing?"

"Get off him!" I lunged upright, gripping the edge of the table. "You're lying! You know exactly what happened!"

"Don't you dare touch her," John snapped, shielding Eira with his arm as he glared at me like I was a diseased rat. "Eira is the only person in this building with an ounce of dignity left."

"She's setting me up!" My chest heaved, air burning down my throat. "John, think for five seconds! What about my hair? What about my makeup? Where is Marta? Where is the glam team you hired from Milan?"

John stood rigid, his dark eyes freezing into cold stone.

"They vanished!" I yelled, stepping closer, refusing to back down despite the heat throbbing in my face. "Marta wasn't in the suite. The wardrobe assistants weren't here. My phone records show nine dropped calls to the agency!"

"You probably locked the door and refused to let them in," John countered flatly.

"And the car?" I pressed on, my voice cutting through his contempt. "The private driver sent by your family's company cancelled on me thirty minutes before the processional! He told me the office manager ordered him to stand down! Call the garage right now! Bring the driver in! Bring the stylists here and put them under the light! Let them tell you to your face that they were here, because they weren't!"
