Chapter 3

The grand ballroom of the Bellagio was bathed in ambient gold lighting, three dozen broadcast cameras tracking every movement on the floor.

It was the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Hart Media Group, streamed live to over ten million viewers across four networks.

My hand rested inside Luca’s arm as we stepped onto the black carpet leading toward the main stage. He wore a bespoke tuxedo, cut broad across the shoulders and tapered clean at the waist. He looked completely at ease under the glare of five-thousand-watt production lights, his gray eyes surveying the room with steady indifference.

A wall of reporters surged against the velvet ropes.

"Sloane! Over here!"

"Is it true? Are you legally married?"

I didn't slow down. I guided Luca straight to the primary broadcast position where the network anchor stood waiting with a microphone.

I turned toward the lens, Luca’s hand settling firmly against the small of my back.

"Good evening," I said, projecting the crisp, polished tone I had spent ten years perfecting on camera. "I know there has been plenty of speculation over the last twenty-four hours. So let me make it official."

I looked up at the man beside me, then back to the center camera.

"This is my husband."

A collective gasp swept through the VIP tables, followed by the rapid, deafening clatter of camera shutters.

My father, Richard Hart, stepped into my peripheral vision near the stage stairs. His jaw was locked tight, his face pale with suppressed rage. As the network cut to a thirty-second commercial bumper, he closed the distance between us.

"Have you lost your mind?" my father whispered through a forced smile, his voice vibrating with anger. "You turned our corporate anniversary into a cheap publicity stunt. Marriage isn't a weapon for you to fight your ex in the tabloids."

"It isn't a stunt, Dad," I said coolly. "It's a clean break."

"It's a disaster," my father snapped. "You brought an unvetted hired hand into our family brand."

I expected Asher to be lurking behind my father, ready to throw another hysterical tantrum like the one in my penthouse. But when I looked across the VIP lounge, Asher was standing near the champagne tower.

He wasn't angry. He wasn't yelling.

Asher was holding a glass of vintage champagne, wearing a calm, knowing smirk that sent a chill straight down my spine.

The red tally light on the primary camera flared back on. The live feed was back up.

Before the host could ask another question, Asher set his glass down on a passing waiter’s tray and walked directly into the center of the broadcast frame.

"Congratulations, Sloane," Asher said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly over the boom mics. "A truly brilliant move. But if you're going to introduce your new husband to the country, you should probably use his real name."

The ballroom went dead silent.

I frowned, glancing between Asher and the man beside me. "His name is Luca Reed."

Asher let out a short, mocking laugh, turning to face the main lens. "His name on the model roster was Luca Reed. But his legal name is Lucian Cole."

The name hit the room like a physical blow.

Several board members near the stage visibly stiffened. Two producers in the tech pit dropped their clipboards.

I froze.

The Cole family was one of the oldest real estate dynasties on the West Coast. Asher’s father had built an empire before passing it down to Asher and his mother. But there had always been a rumor—a carefully suppressed, multi-million-dollar rumor about an elder son born from a first, non-publicized marriage before the Cole patriarch married Asher's mother.

A son who had been paid off, erased from trust funds, and shipped away to Reno to keep the family bloodline pristine for Asher.

"Lucian Cole," Asher repeated, stepping closer, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction. "My estranged older brother. The dirty family secret my mother spent twenty years trying to bury."

My head began to spin. The air in the ballroom suddenly felt impossible to draw.

I looked up at Luca.

His face hadn't changed. His jaw remained set, his gray eyes staring straight through Asher with lethal coldness. He didn't deny it. He didn't blink.

The man I had handpicked from a lineup of twelve random agency models to ruin Asher's narrative wasn't a stranger. He was the one person in the world Asher despised more than me.

The press pit erupted into chaos, but Asher wasn't finished.

He stepped directly into my personal space, ignoring the red broadcast lights, and looked down at me with pure poison in his eyes.

"Tell me something, Sloane," Asher asked, loud enough for every live microphone to pick up the audio. "Did you know before or after you slept with him?"

The question hung in the air like a blade.

Before I could speak, Luca stepped smoothly in front of me, his broad frame cutting off Asher’s line of sight and shielding me completely from the wall of flashing cameras.

Luca looked down at Asher, his voice low, deep, and absolutely steady. "She didn't know anything about me. She hired an ambassador for a campaign."

Asher’s smile widened, sharp and victorious. He took half a step back, locking eyes with his brother.

"I know she didn't know," Asher said softly, delivering the final, fatal blow. "She didn't know. *You* did."

The words echoed in the sudden quiet of the ballroom.

*You did.*

My stomach dropped into a bottomless void.

The live director began shouting frantically through his headset, frantically waving his arms to cut the broadcast feed. "Cut the live! Cut to commercial! Kill the audio now!"

The bright studio lights on the stage dimmed instantly as the feed went dark, but the silence between the three of us remained absolute.

I stepped out from behind Luca's shoulder.

My heart was hammering against my ribs, each beat heavy and sickening. I looked at the man I had signed a legally binding marriage certificate with just over a day ago.

I remembered him walking into my suite late with boxing tape on his hands. I remembered the effortless way he had passed every test, the lack of hesitation when he kissed me, and the unyielding grip on my waist in the hotel lobby.

He hadn't been an applicant answering a last-minute casting call.

He had walked through that door knowing exactly who was waiting on the other side.

"Sloane," Luca said quietly, turning to face me. For the first time since I met him, there was a flicker of something guarded in his gray eyes.

I took one step back, putting distance between us on the polished carpet.

"You knew," I whispered. My voice was tight, stripped of every ounce of performance. "You knew who I was. You knew Asher was my fiancé."

He didn't offer a rehearsed excuse. He just looked at me.

"When you walked into my interview," I said, my gaze locking onto his with absolute clarity, "were you already planning to get into my bed?"

Luca stood motionless under the dimming lights, his silence heavier than any confession.
