Chapter 6

The call to the legal elder connected faster than I expected.

For years, I thought the moment I finally said the words would destroy me. That it would feel like tearing out something vital, something I had survived on even while it hurt me. But when the elder on the other end of the encrypted crystal asked, calm and procedural, “State your request,” my voice came out steady.

“I want to dissolve my marriage contract,” I said.

No hesitation. No shaking.

Just truth, finally spoken in a world built on contracts instead of vows.

The silence that followed wasn’t dramatic. It was brief—barely a breath.

But in that space, something inside me shifted.

Like a vault unlocking after years of pressure.

Like a chain I had mistaken for jewelry finally falling away.

For twenty-five years, I had lived inside the Devereux syndicate thinking endurance was loyalty. That staying silent meant strength. That surviving inside Viktor’s world meant I still belonged to it.

But when I said it out loud, I understood something simple.

I was never locked in.

I was just trained not to leave.

When I returned to the estate, it was already shifting into its nighttime rhythm. Guards rotated positions along the perimeter. Black cars came and went through the gates. Inside, the corridors were quiet in that controlled way syndicate houses always are—silence that isn’t peace, just security.

I walked past it all and went straight to the storage room.

Viktor always called it useless space.

“Why do you keep junk like this?” he used to say, stepping over crates without looking. “This house is not a museum for your habits, Vivienne.”

But it wasn’t junk.

It was evidence.

I knelt and opened the first crate.

Dust rose into the air.

Inside were canvases—carefully wrapped, preserved, hidden away like contraband.

My paintings.

Landscapes of territories I had never been allowed to visit alone. Coastal ports under moonlight. City skylines reflected in wet pavement after rain. Faces I had studied from a distance during negotiations I was never invited to join.

Before I became “Devereux’s wife,” I had been an artist who sold pieces through underground galleries and traveling brokers. Small exchanges. Cash deals. Anonymous transfers through middlemen who never asked questions.

Then Viktor decided I needed to stop “wasting time.”

Art doesn’t build empires, Vivienne.

So I stopped openly.

But I never truly stopped.

I just learned how to disappear while still creating.

I spread the canvases across the floor one by one.

Each one felt like meeting an older version of myself—someone who hadn’t yet learned to shrink.

My hands trembled slightly as I touched the edges of the paint.

Not because I was sad.

Because I had forgotten I was capable of this.

That afternoon, I called Alessandro.

He answered on the first ring.

“Vivienne?” His voice sharpened immediately. “Is something wrong?”

“I’m ready,” I said.

A pause.

Then his laugh came through, real and unfiltered.

“You’re serious.”

“Yes.”

“Finally.” There was a shift in his tone—excitement, disbelief, something like relief. “Vivienne, do you understand what this means? I’ve had collectors asking about your work for years. I’ve had syndicate patrons trying to trace your pieces through back channels. Your name already moves in circles you never stepped into.”

My throat tightened slightly.

Because that was the part Viktor never understood.

Influence doesn’t always sit at a dining table.

Sometimes it builds quietly in the background until people start recognizing your work before they recognize you.

“I want the gallery showing,” I said. “No hiding anymore.”

“You’ll have it,” Alessandro replied immediately. “And not as a favor. As an introduction.”

That word stayed with me long after the call ended.

Introduction.

Not permission.

Not approval.

Recognition.

By evening, I delivered my canvases personally to his gallery near the central district. The building wasn’t extravagant, but it carried weight—encrypted security locks, private viewing rooms, rotating patron access tied to syndicate families who preferred art as both investment and influence.

When I left, paint still stained my fingers.

It felt like proof.

That night, I sat alone in the estate bedroom scrolling through the public syndicate feed.

I shouldn’t have opened it.

But I did.

My son’s post appeared first.

Moon Tide Voyage.

Private syndicate vessel. Controlled waters. Restricted access routes used for alliance gatherings disguised as ceremonial events.

He stood in the image smiling beside Seraphina.

Viktor was there too.

So was my father.

All of them arranged like a finished negotiation.

And I wasn’t in it.

Not even on the edge.

Just absent.

The caption beneath it read:

Grateful for the people who have always supported me.

Support.

I stared at the word until it stopped meaning anything.

Because I had been support for twenty-five years.

Holding up systems that never once held me back.

I closed the tablet slowly.

And something inside me went still.

Not broken.

Not shattered.

Settled.

That night, I opened my wardrobe and pulled out the red dress Viktor once told me was “inappropriate for a woman in my position.”

Too visible.

Too loud.

Too much.

So I wore it.

Then I applied the cosmetics he said I had “outgrown.”

When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t look younger.

I didn’t look different.

I just looked like someone who had stopped asking for permission to exist.

Later, I went to a tavern in the lower district.

Not one of the syndicate lounges with private booths and guarded entrances.

Just a place where deals were whispered over music and nobody cared who you were unless you made yourself worth remembering.

No one looked at me like I belonged to someone else.

I ordered wine.

I drank it slowly.

For once, there was no schedule waiting for me, no estate demanding maintenance, no voice correcting how I held my life.

Halfway through the glass, my crystal comm device lit up.

Viktor.

Then again.

And again.

I didn’t answer.

More messages followed.

Where are you?

Answer me.

This is not how you behave.

The final one came colder.

I gave you space. Don’t make this difficult.

I stared at it for a moment.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Just aware.

Because that was always his language.

Space that still required reporting.

Freedom that still required permission.

I turned the device slightly and lifted my glass into the camera’s view.

Behind me, the tavern glowed—warm light, movement, life that didn’t wait for approval from powerful names.

I took a sip.

Then posted the image publicly.

No explanation.

No apology.

Just a caption beneath it:

What a wonderful night.
