Chapter 4

The red confirmation code flashed 9:00 AM on my phone screen, illuminating the sterile hallway of the federal immigration building.

"Put that away," Daniel said, walking past me without breaking his stride.

We stepped into Review Room 4B. The space smelled of floor wax and stale coffee. A long metal table dominated the center, flanked by cheap plastic chairs.

I pulled out the center chair. Daniel bypassed the empty seat next to me and sat two chairs down. He placed his leather briefcase on the floor, leaving a vast, empty gap between us. The physical distance felt like a calculated statement.

Officer Davis entered through a side door, carrying a thick manila folder. He sat across from us and clicked his pen.

"Let us start with the daily household routine," Officer Davis said, opening the file. "Mr. Miller, who prepares the minor's meals?"

"My son handles his own breakfast," Daniel replied smoothly. "And he buys his lunch at school."

I turned my head toward him. "I wake up at six-ten every morning to pack Owen's lunch. I have done it since he was nine years old."

Daniel kept his eyes locked on the officer. "I have no knowledge of that. Owen uses his allowance at the cafeteria."

"You have no knowledge of the turkey sandwiches and sliced apples sitting on the kitchen counter every single morning for the past eight years?" I asked. "Or the thermoses of hot soup during the winter?"

"Like I said," Daniel answered flatly. "I am unaware of any such routine. If you left food out, it was for your own consumption."

I looked at the man I had called my husband. He sat still, erasing thousands of mornings of care with a single sentence.

Officer Davis made a quick note on his legal pad. He flipped a page in the folder.

"Let us move to financial co-mingling," Officer Davis continued. "Mrs. Lin, you claim you provided seventy-two thousand dollars to fund the initial servers for Mr. Miller's software startup."

"I wired it directly from my personal savings account," I said. "I liquidated my retirement fund to cover that invoice because his credit cards were maxed out. The transaction history from the bank is in exhibit four."

Daniel adjusted his tie. "That money was a corporate loan from a third-party vendor. Grace had nothing to do with the infrastructure capital."

"The vendor was listed under my maiden name," I said.

"A clerical error by my old accountant," Daniel countered.

Beside me, he sat wearing the charcoal suit I picked up from the dry cleaners yesterday, casually rewriting my financial ruin into a corporate footnote.

The heavy oak door swung open. Owen walked in, carrying a plastic binder. He dropped it onto the metal table and slid into the chair right next to his father.

"These are the family records," Owen said.

Officer Davis opened the binder. He spread three glossy photographs across the table. Thanksgiving dinner. A summer trip to the Grand Canyon. Owen's middle school graduation.

I looked closely at the edges of the photos. A sliver of my blue dress remained in the Thanksgiving shot. Half of my left arm appeared in the graduation picture. The Grand Canyon shot ended abruptly at Daniel's shoulder. They had literally taken scissors to the memories. I could see the jagged, uneven lines where the blade had sliced through the photo paper, cutting me out of the frame before scanning the images into the official record.

"Mrs. Lin is absent from these family milestones," Officer Davis noted, tapping the glossy paper.

"She rarely participated," Owen said. His voice carried that familiar, arrogant drawl. "She mostly just tried to isolate me."

"Isolate you?" I asked.

"Exhibit B," Owen said, pulling a thick stack of permission slips from the back of the binder. He pushed them toward the officer. "She signed all my school bus and field trip forms instead of letting my dad do it. She was controlling my social life to make herself look like a necessary guardian. She even showed up to my soccer games to monitor who I talked to."

My chest tightened. "Your father was locked in the garage coding for fourteen hours a day. If I did not sign those forms, you would have missed every single field trip. I brought orange slices to those games because you complained you were thirsty."

"Please address your answers to me, Mrs. Lin," Officer Davis interrupted, raising a hand. "Do you deny signing these documents?"

"I signed them," I said. "I also paid the field trip fees."

"To assert dominance over my schedule," Owen added, leaning back in his chair. "You isolated me from my real dad."

I did not elaborate. I did not try to cover up their contradictions or defend my actions further. I answered the remaining questions factually, letting their rehearsed fiction clash against the reality of the documents.

Officer Davis leaned back in his chair, lacing his fingers together. He looked directly at Daniel.

"Mr. Miller, you claim this marriage was a fraudulent arrangement from the start. You state that Mrs. Lin only married you to secure her residency."

"Yes," Daniel said.

"You have been married for thirteen years," Officer Davis said, narrowing his eyes. "Why wait thirteen years to report it?"

Daniel reached into his suit jacket. He pulled out a folded document and pushed it across the table.

"I recently discovered the extent of her deceit," Daniel said. "I felt a moral obligation to correct the record before my company enters the public sector."

Officer Davis unfolded the paper. I recognized the letterhead immediately. It was the unreleased IPO schedule from Daniel's lead underwriter.

"This is a timeline for a public stock offering," Officer Davis said, frowning at the dense columns of text. "How does this relate to your marriage?"

I leaned forward, reading the bold dates printed on the page. The dates lined up with the sudden shift in Daniel's behavior.

"Look at the bottom row," I told the officer.

Davis dragged his finger down the page. "Equity freeze date: October fourteenth. Fraud report filed: October twenty-fifth."

Eleven days.

Daniel reported me to immigration exactly eleven days after the corporate lawyers locked his shares. He needed to eliminate my spousal claim to the stock before the company went public.

"The dates are a coincidence," Daniel said, his face a mask of indifference.

"Are they?" I asked. "You realized a divorce would split your founder shares in half, so you decided to have me deported instead."

"We are here to discuss your immigration status, Grace, not my company," Daniel snapped.

"The timeline speaks for itself," I said, looking back at Officer Davis. "He is using this federal agency to protect his valuation. If I am deported for fraud, our marriage is annulled. The marital assets vanish. He keeps one hundred percent of the stock."

Daniel finally glared at me, the neutral mask slipping for a fraction of a second. "Do not put words in my mouth."

Officer Davis closed the folder. He tapped his pen against the metal table.

"I have enough for the preliminary review," Officer Davis said, standing up. "We will verify the financial documents and the timeline. You will receive a mailed notice regarding the next steps."

I stood up. My chair scraped loudly against the linoleum floor. I grabbed my purse and walked out of Review Room 4B without waiting for them to move.

The hallway felt colder than the room. I pressed the elevator button. The metal doors reflected my exhausted posture. Thirteen years of building a family, reduced to a stack of cropped photos and a calculated stock strategy.

Footsteps echoed behind me.

Daniel stepped up to the elevator bank. He stood close, invading my personal space for the first time all morning.

"Give up your marital equity claim, and I will tell them you are not a fraud," Daniel said.

The elevator chime rang.

The metal doors slid open.

"Do you choose the company, or do you choose this country?" Daniel asked.
