Chapter 2

Maya's pov

The alarms screamed through the ER like a nightmare I couldn’t escape. “Ethan!” I cried, my voice raw and desperate as I lunged toward the bed. Strong but gentle hands caught me,a nurse with kind eyes and a grave expression. “Let the team work, ma’am. Give them space.”

My legs buckled. I pressed my back against the cold wall, heart pounding so violently it felt like it might crack my ribs. The room erupted into controlled chaos. Doctors and nurses moved with urgent precision around my son’s tiny, fragile body. “Respiratory arrest,” one doctor barked. “Bag him now!”

They pressed a clear mask over Ethan’s face, connecting it to a resuscitation bag, squeezing it in steady rhythm to force air into his lungs. “Oxygen sats dropping fast,” another voice called. “Pulse is weak, focus on ventilation first. Prepare for compressions if it bottoms out.”

I stood frozen, tears streaming unchecked down my face. Just minutes ago, he had been playing with his red airplane, calling for me with that sweet, trusting voice. Now machines were fighting to keep him alive. “Please, baby,” I whispered, voice breaking. “Come back to Mommy. Fight like you always do. I’m right here.”

They kept the nebulizer going even now, pushing more albuterol mist into the bag while an IV delivered magnesium and steroids. “Push epinephrine if needed,” the lead doctor ordered. A nurse explained quickly amid the noise: “We’re opening his airways and supporting his heart. In severe asthma, the lungs trap air, making it hard for oxygen to get in. We’re doing everything possible.”

*Everything possible.* The words echoed hollowly as minutes stretched into an eternity. I replayed the frantic drive, the rain pounding the windshield like my panic, me talking nonstop about airplane adventures to keep him calm. His first smile in the hospital. His first steps across the playroom while Adrian was off with Vanessa again. I had cheered alone, filming it, hoping it would matter.

“Heart rate dropping,” a monitor warned. They adjusted the bag, checking for chest rise. “Possible tension pneumothorax, prep for decompression if needed.” The doctor made a split-second call. “Intubate. Tube him now.”

I covered my mouth, stifling a sob, as they carefully slid the breathing tube down Ethan’s throat. A ventilator took over with a mechanical whoosh, forcing air in and out. The beeps stabilized slightly, but his color remained terrifyingly pale, lips still tinged blue. I slid down the wall, knees to my chest, rocking like I used to during his thunderstorms, whispering prayers.

Time lost all meaning. More medications. Blood gases drawn from a tiny needle. Discussions of PICU transfer. Finally, after what felt like forever, the doctor approached me, scrubs wrinkled, eyes heavy with exhaustion but kind. “Mrs. Blackwood?”

I shot up, blanket falling. “How is he?”

He guided me to a quiet corner. “We followed every pediatric protocol, bronchodilators, steroids, magnesium, full ventilatory support. But the attack was too aggressive. His airways swelled shut too fast. Despite everything… Ethan passed a few minutes ago. I’m so very sorry.”

The floor tilted. I grabbed the wall. “No. No, that can’t be. The machine was breathing for him. You said you were fighting..”

“We did everything humanly possible,” he said gently. “Respiratory arrest led to cardiac failure. His little body was exhausted. We couldn’t bring him back.”

A guttural sob tore from my chest. I collapsed into a chair, wailing openly, the sound echoing down the hallway. Nurses rushed over with tissues and hugs, but nothing could fill the gaping wound where my heart used to be.

My baby.

My Ethan.

Gone.

The toy airplane is still on the playroom floor. The star blanket I’d wrapped him in. All the firsts and futures stolen in one cruel night.

I don’t know how long I cried. Time dissolved. Eventually, they let me see him. He looked peacefully asleep in the bed, tubes removed, face relaxed as if after a long day of play. I climbed up carefully and gathered him in my arms, rocking him like I had when he was newborn. “I’m so sorry, baby,” I whispered, kissing his forehead again and again, tears dripping onto his skin. “Mommy tried everything. I love you bigger than the sky. Wait for me somehow. Please.”

Grief crashed in relentless waves, anger at the storm, at the asthma, at myself for every possible misstep. But mostly fury at Adrian. Where was he? Why hadn’t he come?

Hours later, the PICU doors burst open. Adrian strode in, hair slightly disheveled, expensive coat over his suit. He looked like he’d come straight from the party, perhaps with a quick stop to change. His face was pale, but that familiar mask of control was firmly in place.

“Maya,” he said flatly. “What happened?”

I stood slowly, legs numb, in the private room they’d given us. “They couldn’t save him,” I whispered, voice hoarse. Fresh tears fell. “He stopped breathing in the ER. They did CPR, every medicine, a breathing tube… everything. He fought so hard, Adrian. But it was too late.”

Adrian stared at the small, still form. For a flicker of a second, something cracked, pain? Regret? Then the mask slammed back down. He turned to me. “You let this happen? How, Maya? You’re his mother. Why didn’t you call sooner or get him help faster?”

The words slapped harder than any blow. “I called you *repeatedly*!” I shouted, voice echoing. “Six times, maybe more. You were at Vanessa’s birthday. You said the doctors would handle it. You told me I exaggerated!”

“I was with important people,” he snapped, though his hands trembled slightly. “You know how these alliances work. The Blackwood name..”

“Our son is *dead*!” I screamed, stepping closer. “And you blame *me*? I drove through a storm with him in my arms. Gave him his inhaler. Begged you to come. Where were you when he called for help? When he said his chest hurt like a rock? You chose her. Again. Always her.”

Adrian paced, running a hand through his hair. “This is on you for not managing his condition better. We have the best doctors on retainer. You should have prevented the attack.”

I laughed bitterly through tears. “Prevented it? I lived with it every single day while you were gone. I tracked every trigger, loved him enough for both of us. Your neglect killed him as much as asthma.”

His eyes flashed with guilt and anger. “Don’t you dare. I provided the house, the money, the name. You stayed because it was convenient.”

“Convenient?” My voice dropped to a venomous whisper, shaking with rage and sorrow. “I stayed for Ethan. To give him a family. But you destroyed it. And now he’s gone.”

Silence fell, broken only by distant monitor beeps. Adrian looked at Ethan’s body for a long moment. A single tear escaped his eye,he wiped it away quickly. “This changes nothing between us,” he said coldly. “The funeral will be handled properly. The family name must be protected. Vanessa will help with arrangements.”

“Get out,” I said, turning back to my son. “Leave me with him.”

He hesitated, then left. The door clicked shut.

I held Ethan’s cold hand and cried until my body ached. Grief mixed with a dark, simmering resolve. The Blackwoods had taken everything. Something inside me had shifted forever. The forgiving wife was dead.

But the pain was still too raw. I whispered stories to him until nurses suggested rest. I refused. I stayed until dawn, memorizing every detail of his peaceful face. The world moved on outside, but mine had ended.

Adrian’s blame echoed in my head, fueling a fire I never knew I possessed. As they finally took Ethan for preparations, I made a silent vow through my tears.

This was not the end. Not for me.
