Chapter 1

Clara's POV

Everyone in Sterling Designs knew who built the company's reputation, but only my husband acted like my name on the building permit was a typo that should never have existed.

And yet, here I was, working on the master blueprint ever since I got home at four in the afternoon. It was the design that would restore the historic City Opera House—a $50 million contract that would make or break Sterling Designs. If any mistake were made, the fault would rest entirely on my shoulders and no one else's.

“Mommy?”

It was my son, Oliver. Right beside him stood his twin sister, Olive. They stood at the doorway, rubbing their eyes, having just woken up from a nap after hours of waiting for their father.

Seeing Oliver in his little black suit and Olive in her pink party dress—their shoes still buckled on their feet—a fresh wave of sadness washed over me.

“Is Daddy still coming today for our birthday?” Oliver asked softly.

My eyes instinctively drifted to the wall clock. It was exactly 9:30 PM. My heart ached, but I closed the gap between us and knelt down in front of them.

“Let's wait for Daddy a little bit longer,” I assured him gently. He gave a quiet nod.

Today was my twins' seventh birthday, as well as the firm’s tenth anniversary gala. Damian had promised me at the office that he would arrive by 7:00 PM to celebrate with them and publicly present me as the lead architect.

“It's okay if Daddy is busy again today,” Olive whispered. The dull sadness in her young eyes was unmistakable.

“It's okay,” I repeated, forcing a comforting smile. “I'm sure he wouldn't want to miss this for anything in the world.”

They nodded and walked back to the living room. I didn't know if I was trying to convince them or lie to myself. We had already been waiting two hours past the promise.

I sat back down at my desk and opened my phone. The screen displayed six unread text messages and a dozen unreturned calls—all sent by me.

I glanced toward the living room. Oliver sat near the window, quietly staring out into the driveway in his specialized noise-canceling headphones. Sitting on the table beside him was a birthday cake with melting candles.

My thumb hovered over Damian’s contact name, but my hands began to shake. A part of me wanted to believe his promises, but the rest of me remembered every single time he had done this since our children were born.

My children didn't deserve this. I didn't deserve it either. It was no longer just about unfulfilled promises.

A notification popped up at the top of my screen—an Instagram update from Sienna. Instinctively, I tapped on it.

The first image that hit my eyes was a photo of Damian personally adjusting a diamond necklace around Sienna’s neck at an exclusive rooftop lounge. But what broke my heart even more was her caption:

“Late nights with the best boss.”

Sienna was his personal secretary. Ever since she joined the firm, the boundaries between them had dissolved. Whenever I brought up their inappropriate closeness, Damian would brush it off, claiming he was simply "mentoring her to become a better version of herself."

Looking at the photograph now, it was abundantly clear that mentorship had nothing to do with it. My heart throbbed with a dull, heavy ache.

Twelve years ago, when we met at the university architectural showcase, Damian was an ambitious outsider struggling to land a single client. I turned down a prestigious fellowship at Vanguard Holdings just to stay by his side, marry him, and build Sterling Designs from scratch. Back then, he held my hand and swore in front of our families that marrying me was the luckiest day of his life—promising that as soon as he made it big, he would build me an empire.

He built the empire. But he forgot who drew the blueprints. Now, he acted like my very presence was a burden he was forced to carry.

Before I backed out of the app, my eyes caught his hand in the frame. His ring wasn't there. Our wedding ring was gone.

On our wedding day eight years ago, he had placed that silver band on his finger and vowed never to take it off—calling it a reminder of the woman who made his dreams possible. For nine years, I carried his company on my back to keep those dreams alive.

I remembered the last time I brought it up, his harsh response echoing in my mind: “Stop being paranoid, Clara. It's just a wedding ring. No one is taking me away from you.”

Those words stung deeper now than they had back then. No one was taking him away from me—he was giving himself away freely.

I lowered my phone and looked down at the $50 million City Opera House master file open on my laptop screen. My name was stamped into the encrypted metadata as the sole creator and license holder of the blueprint.

Slowly, without shedding a single tear, I clicked on the security administrative permissions, revoked Damian’s master access key, and transferred the local files onto an encrypted flash drive.

I watched the progress bar hit one hundred percent, permanently wiping the local cache from his shared cloud network. For nine years, I had poured my intellect, my late nights, and my career ambitions into his firm, letting him parade around as the visionary while I did the heavy lifting in the dark.

No more.

I safely ejected the flash drive and slipped it into my purse, right alongside the twins’ passports and birth certificates. Next, I reached into the bottom drawer of my desk and pulled out my custom drafting seal—the personal emblem required to legally validate any architectural document submitted to the City Board.

I closed my laptop with a quiet, decisive snap.

Walking into the living room, I gently unplugged Oliver’s headphones and smoothed down Olive’s pink dress.

“Come on, sweethearts,” I whispered, my voice steadier than it had been all night. “Let's go blow out the candles together. Just the three of us.”

Oliver looked up at me, his quiet eyes searching my face before giving a small nod. After we blew out the lingering flames, I unbuckled their dress shoes, packed their bags, and carried them to their rooms to get changed for our early morning train.

Tomorrow morning at the City Board review, Damian was planning to walk into that boardroom with Sienna by his side, ready to present my work as his own. He was expecting to bask in the applause, secure the $50 million contract, and return home to a quiet, compliant wife who would forgive him again.

But he was about to find out what happens when the architect officially leaves the building.
