Chapter 3

The heavy steel deadbolt slid back with a grinding screech just after dawn.

Adrian stepped into the safe room carrying a ceramic bowl of steaming oatmeal. His charcoal suit was pressed without a single wrinkle, his hair combed straight back. He looked like an executive stepping into a boardroom, completely detached from the cage he had built.

He stopped two paces from the cot, studying me.

I sat with my back pressed against the concrete wall, knees drawn to my chest, my hands resting calmly on my shins. My face was cold and still. I had listened to him and Corinne Hale on the floor above me for half the night, but I offered him no tears. No trembling lower lip. No desperate pleas for mercy.

Adrian shifted his weight, his jaw hardening at my silence.

"You heard us," he said, waiting for a crack in my composure. "Don't pretend you were asleep, Camille. I know you were awake for every minute of it."

I stared past his shoulder at the open steel doorway.

"Corinne knows how to make a man feel valued," he said, his voice tightening. "She doesn't freeze up when I touch her. She begs for it. Does that burn, Camille? Knowing how easily another woman stepped into your bed?"

I didn't blink. I didn't give him a single twitch of an eyebrow.

"Answer me!" he roared, his voice bouncing violently off the steel panels.

His composure shattered in an instant. He lunged forward, closing the distance between us, and reached down to dig his fingers into my jaw.

The moment his hand came within reach, I lunged forward.

I parted my teeth and clamped down onto his index finger with everything I had left.

My teeth sank deep into the joint, crushing through the flesh until I felt the hard resistance of bone.

Adrian let out an ear-splitting shriek. He yanked backward, but I bit down harder, locking my jaw like a vise. The warm, metallic taste of his blood flooded my mouth, sharp and thick on my tongue.

"Let go, you psycho!" he screamed.

He raised his free hand and swung hard.

The strike hit the side of my face with brutal force. My head snapped sideways, slamming against the plaster wall. Bright sparks exploded behind my eyes, and my grip gave way.

I slumped sideways onto the thin mattress, my vision swimming.

Adrian stumbled back against the steel frame of the door, clutching his mangled finger to his chest. Blood dripped steadily from his knuckle, staining the white cuff of his dress shirt.

"You feral bitch," he breathed, his chest heaving as he stared at the crimson running down his wrist.

He grabbed the bowl of oatmeal from the floor where he had dropped it and hurled it violently downward. The porcelain shattered against the concrete, splashing warm oats and jagged shards across my bare feet.

"Eat it," he snarled, trembling with rage. "Get on your knees and lick it off the floor. That's all you're worth now. You don't get another drop of water or a single crumb until you clean that up with your tongue."

I pushed myself upright against the wall, wiping a smear of his blood from my split lip with the back of my hand.

I looked at the mess, then shifted my gaze directly to his hazel eyes.

Slowly, deliberately, I stretched my right leg forward as far as the steel cuff allowed and kicked the largest cluster of broken ceramic.

The shards skidded across the floor, slamming against the far corner and spattering the baseboard with gray porridge.

"I'd rather starve," I said, my voice low and completely steady.

Adrian stared at the mess in the corner, his mouth open, humiliated and powerless to bend my will. Short-term hunger was nothing. I could endure an empty stomach, but I would not trade away the last shred of my dignity for a bowl of his slop.

"Then starve," he hissed, his face twisted in disgust. "Rot down here until your father forgets your name."

He spun on his heel and slammed the heavy door shut. The mechanical bolt thumped home, locking me once again into the muffled dark.

I leaned my head against the cold concrete, breathing through the dull throb in my cheekbone.

Ten minutes crawled by in heavy silence.

Then, faint and distant, the electronic chime of the front door keypad cut through the house.

Someone was punching in the entry code.

Footsteps crossed the foyer above, moving briskly toward the private study directly on the other side of my reinforced partition.

"Adrian?" a woman's voice called out.

It was not Corinne Hale's smooth, clinical drawl. It was lighter, hurried, and sharp with irritation.

Livia Grant. Adrian's executive secretary.

"Adrian, are you still here?" she muttered, the sound drifting faintly through the ventilation grate near the ceiling.

A desk drawer scraped open in the study.

"Unbelievable," Livia grumbled to herself, her voice carrying cleanly through the narrow acoustic duct. "He ships Camille off to her family estate, and her paperwork is still cluttering the entire desk. Why does he even keep her things in this house? Isn't having me and that therapist enough for him?"

She slammed a folder onto the mahogany desktop with a frustrated huff.

My pulse jumped.

I dragged myself toward the north corner of the cell, pulling the anchor chain taut until the steel bite of the cuff pressed hard into the bone of my ankle. I leaned my face close to the iron slats of the low-set ventilation return.

"Livia," I said.

The rustling in the study stopped instantly.

The room went dead silent.

"Livia," I called again, keeping my voice firm and low. "Look behind the third bookcase."

"Who's there?" Livia gasped, her voice tightening with immediate panic. "Adrian? Is someone in the house?"

"It's Camille."

"Camille?" A sharp intake of air rattled through the grate. "Stop it. Camille is in Switzerland. Adrian told the executive board she had a nervous breakdown and left the country."

"He lied to you, Livia," I said through the vent. "He locked me in a safe room behind his private study three days ago. The latch is on the third shelf. Press the release and open this door."

"Nice try," Livia scoffed, though the tremor in her tone betrayed her terror. "This is a trap. Adrian is testing me to see if I pry into his private files. I'm not touching anything."

"If this were a test, Livia, would I know about the two of you?" I asked quietly. "Would I know you've been staying late in the executive suite with him every Thursday since November?"

Silence answered from the room above.

"He won't leave me for you," I continued, pressing every word clearly through the metal grate. "And he won't leave Corinne Hale for you either. To Adrian, you're just a disposable convenience when he's stressed at the office. But if you open this door, everything changes."

"What are you talking about?" she whispered, her voice closer to the wall now.

"Adrian's logistics firm survives entirely on my father's distribution networks," I told her. "If I vanish or get locked in an asylum, Rowan Logistics terminates every single contract. Voss Logistics will collapse within six months. You'll be the secretary to a bankrupt felon who still spends his nights with Corinne."

I paused, listening to her shallow, erratic breathing on the other side of the partition.

"Unlock this door," I said. "I won't contest the divorce. I'll sign the residential deeds over to him and walk away from this marriage completely. You want his heart, Livia? You can have him all to yourself. But you have to get me out of this room right now."

The floorboards creaked as she moved toward the far wall.

"How do I open it?" she asked, her voice shaking violently.

"The third shelf from the window," I commanded. "Run your fingers along the bottom seam of the trim. There's a hidden magnetic catch."

A moment later, I heard the faint sound of wood shifting, followed by the soft click of an electronic release.

"There's a keypad behind the panel," Livia whispered nervously. "What's the code?"

"Try his master access code. His birthday, then our anniversary."

A sequence of rapid electronic beeps cut through the air.

A heavy mechanical clunk echoed through the reinforced frame.

The steel door swung outward, flooding my dim cell with the bright morning light of the study.

Livia stood in the opening, clutching a brass key ring she had snatched from Adrian's desk. Her eyes went wide with pure terror as she looked at me—at the dried blood on my chin, my torn clothes, and the heavy iron cuff anchoring my ankle to the floor.

"My God," she breathed, taking an involuntary step back. "He actually did this to you..."

"Give me the small chrome key," I said, pointing at the ring in her hand.

Her hands shook so badly that she dropped the keys onto the rug before scooping them up and pressing the chrome cylinder into my palm. I shoved it into the cuff's lock, twisted hard, and felt the mechanism snap open.

The steel band fell away.

I stood up. A wave of dizziness rushed through my head, but I forced my legs to hold my weight.

I walked into the study, feeling the soft wool carpet beneath my bare feet. Adrian's heavy black overcoat was draped over the back of the leather desk chair. I grabbed it and pulled it around my shoulders, buttoning it tightly over my bare skin.

"What do I do now?" Livia stammered, backing toward the hallway. "If he finds out I let you out—"

"Close the bookshelf," I told her, my voice cold and steady. "Act like you were never here."

I stepped out of the study and moved down the long hallway toward the front entrance, my bare soles silent against the hardwood.

I pushed open the heavy front door and stepped onto the damp stone porch. The brisk morning air hit my face like ice water, instantly clearing the lingering fog from my mind.

At the bottom of the porch steps, I stopped.

I turned back and looked up at the second-story study window, staring at the grand estate that had almost become my grave.

Adrian thought he had buried me.

He had left my blood on that concrete floor, my name in Corinne's falsified medical files, and his own fingerprints all over my skin. Every single mark, every scrap of paper, and every lock he had installed would become the evidence that tore his life apart.
