Chapter 1

The groom was eleven minutes late.

I stood at the front of the Grand Lyle Ballroom in a dress I had paid for myself, holding a bouquet of white peonies, while three hundred guests whispered behind their programs.

"He's stuck in traffic," the wedding planner told me for the third time. Her smile had gone stiff.

"Sure," I said.

Then the giant screen behind the altar flickered.

It was supposed to show a slideshow. Torin and me at the beach. Torin and me at his company's anniversary gala. Our hands, our rings, our future.

Instead, a photo filled the screen.

Me, walking into the Marquette Hotel at night. A tall man in a dark coat had his hand on my lower back.

The room went dead silent.

Another photo. The same man and me in the elevator, his head bent toward mine.

Then a third. A hotel room door, closing.

Someone in the front row gasped. Someone else laughed.

"Oh my God." A woman in a red silk dress stood up from the family section. Sabine Rourke, Torin's childhood friend, the woman his mother had always wanted him to marry. She pressed her hand to her chest like she might faint. "Elara. How could you?"

"Turn it off," I said to the tech booth. My voice came out flat. "Now."

Nobody moved.

Sabine walked down the aisle, slow, letting every camera find her. "Three days before your wedding? Really? Torin gave you everything. A girl from nowhere, and he gave you his name."

"You don't know what you're looking at."

"I know a hotel when I see one."

The ballroom doors slammed open.

Torin Hale strode in, tuxedo jacket open, phone still in his fist. His face was white. Not hurt. Furious.

"Torin," I said. "Those photos are cut. There's a full video. Let me—"

He didn't slow down. He came straight up the altar steps and swung his hand.

The slap tore the veil out of my hair. Pins ripped at my scalp. The lace drifted down and landed on the floor at his feet.

My left ear rang, high and thin, like a wire pulled tight.

"I give you a wedding," Torin said, low and shaking, "and this is how you repay me?"

Three hundred people watched. Nobody said a word.

I touched my cheek. It burned. Strange, how calm my hands were.

"Are you done?" I asked.

His eyes narrowed. "Excuse me?"

I pulled my phone out from the hidden pocket in my dress. My fingers found the file without looking. "That man is a doctor. My father had a cardiac episode at the Marquette. I went to the room because—"

"Stop."

"Watch it. Thirty seconds. That's all I'm asking."

He knocked the phone out of my hand.

It skidded across the marble and smacked against the first pew. The screen spidered into cracks.

"I don't need to watch you lie," Torin said. He turned to the crowd and raised his voice. "The wedding is canceled. I'm sorry you all came for nothing."

Sabine let out a soft little sigh, like she'd been waiting her whole life for that sentence.

"Torin." A rough voice came from the third row. "That's enough."

My father pushed past the guests. Magnus wore the same gray suit he'd worn to my college graduation. His tie was crooked. His breathing was too heavy for someone who'd only walked ten feet.

"Dad, sit down," I said.

He didn't. He stepped between me and Torin and squared his shoulders. "You put your hand on my daughter again, son, and we're going to have a problem."

Torin almost laughed. "A problem. With you."

Sabine moved closer and wrinkled her nose at my father's shoes. "Isn't this the uncle from the farm? Or is it the father? I can never keep Elara's people straight." She turned to the guests with a sweet smile. "They showed up the day after the engagement. Funny timing, right? Poor relatives always know when there's money nearby."

A few people chuckled.

Dad's jaw went rigid. His hand curled into a fist at his side.

"You want to know who you're talking to?" he said to Torin. "My daughter is—"

"Dad."

I caught his wrist. His pulse slammed under my fingers.

He looked at me. "Ellie, they should know."

"No." I shook my head slowly. "Don't tell him who I am."

"Why not?"

"Because he never asked."

Something shifted in Torin's face. A flicker. Then it was gone.

I looked down at my left hand. The diamond Torin had picked out was too big for my finger. He'd said it was a statement. He'd said people needed to see it.

I twisted it off. It caught on my knuckle, then slid free.

I held it out to him. He didn't take it.

So I set it on the altar, next to the unlit unity candle.

"What is this?" Torin said. "Some kind of performance?"

I walked to the first pew and picked up my broken phone. The screen still worked, barely. I scrolled through the cracks to a number I hadn't called in three years.

It rang once.

"Miss Elara." A man's voice, crisp and careful. Gideon Larkspur, my family's attorney. "I wasn't expecting to hear from you today. Congratulations are—"

"Gideon, I need two things."

A pause. "Go ahead."

I put the call on speaker. Let them hear it.

"First, draw up divorce papers. We signed the marriage license at the courthouse on Monday. I want it undone."

The ballroom stirred. Sabine's smile slipped.

"Understood," Gideon said. "And the second?"

I looked straight at Torin.

"Pull every bit of support under my name from the Hale Group. All of it. Effective today."

Silence on the line. Then: "All of it, Miss Elara? You're certain?"

"I've never been more certain."

"It'll be done within the hour."

I ended the call.

For a second, nobody breathed.

Then Torin laughed. A real laugh, loud and ugly, bouncing off the chandeliers.

"Support," he said. "Your name. Elara, you work at a bookstore. You paid for that dress in installments. I saw the receipt."

"You did."

"So who was that? A friend from community theater?" He looked out at the crowd, inviting them in on the joke. "She's bluffing. She's embarrassed, so she's bluffing."

Sabine slipped her arm through his. "Honestly, it's a little sad."

Dad stepped toward them. I squeezed his wrist again, and he stopped.

"Let's go home, Dad," I said.

"You're not going anywhere until you explain yourself," Torin snapped. "You humiliated me in front of my investors, my board—"

The side door burst open.

A young man in a wrinkled gray suit ran in, tie flapping, tablet clutched to his chest. Owen Pryce, Torin's executive secretary. He nearly tripped on the runner.

"Mr. Hale!"

Torin spun around. "Not now, Owen."

"Sir, it can't wait." Owen was panting. His face had gone gray. "Northvale Capital just pulled out."

The color drained from Torin's cheeks.

"What did you say?"

"They withdrew. Everything. The Series C, the credit line, the bridge loan for the Harbor project." Owen held up the tablet with shaking hands. "The notice came in four minutes ago. Legal says it's already executed."

"That's impossible." Torin grabbed the tablet. "Northvale is our biggest investor. They don't just walk away."

"They did, sir. And the stock—" Owen swallowed. "The stock is already moving."

Torin stared at the screen.

Then, slowly, he lifted his head and looked at me.

I picked my veil up off the floor, folded it once, and tucked it under my arm.

"Elara," he said. His voice had changed. "What did you do?"

I took my father's arm and turned toward the doors.

"Ask Northvale," I said. "You'll find out who signs their checks."
