Chapter 2

Dorian Quinn's residence was a sprawling estate in the most exclusive zip code of the city. The air inside smelled of expensive floral arrangements and old money.

Hannah sat on the edge of a velvet armchair in the grand parlor. Dorian sat opposite her, sipping Earl Grey tea from a bone china cup. Dorian's manicured nails tapped rhythmically against the saucer-a clear sign of her impatience.

Hannah slid a single sheet of paper across the glass coffee table.

Dorian picked it up, her eyes scanning the text. Her perfectly arched eyebrows shot up. She slammed the paper down.

"Thirty million dollars?" Dorian's voice was sharp, cutting through the quiet room. "Are you out of your mind, Hannah? What exactly have you contributed to the Cox family to demand this kind of money? This is extortion!"

Hannah's expression didn't change. Her stomach churned, the dull ache a constant reminder of the ticking clock inside her. She reached into her designer handbag and pulled out a small, silver USB drive. She placed it gently on the table.

"Inside this drive," Hannah said, her voice smooth and devoid of intimidation, "are bank records proving Branden transferred significant marital assets into an offshore account under Bailey Koch's name. There are also several internal emails detailing how the Cox Group handled the tax discrepancies on the Southside development project last year."

Dorian's face drained of color. The tapping of her nails stopped instantly. Her fingers gripped the armrests of her chair.

As a housewife, everyone assumed Hannah was stupid. They forgot she possessed an IQ that rivaled the top engineers in the country. She had noticed the discrepancies months ago when organizing Branden's home office, and she had quietly backed everything up.

"I only want what is legally mine, plus a little compensation for my emotional distress," Hannah continued, leaning back. "If you refuse, these files will be attached to my divorce filing. They will become public record. I imagine the media-and the IRS-would be very interested."

Dorian glared at her, her chest heaving. She realized she had severely underestimated the quiet, submissive woman sitting before her.

"You are a snake," Dorian hissed.

"I learned from the best," Hannah replied calmly.

Dorian gritted her teeth. The scandal would cost the Cox Group hundreds of millions in stock value. Thirty million was a drop in the bucket to make this problem disappear.

"Fine," Dorian spat. "But you sign a non-disclosure agreement. And you pack your bags and leave Branden's house immediately."

"Gladly," Hannah said. She pulled a pen from her purse, signed the NDA Dorian thrust at her, and stood up. "The money needs to be in my account within three days. Or the files automatically send."

Hannah walked out of the mansion, the heavy oak doors closing behind her. She got into her car, her hands shaking slightly from the adrenaline. She had done it. Her medical bills would be covered.

She drove straight to the sleek, glass-paneled headquarters of Vexel Dynamics.

Three years ago, Hannah had been one of the founding engineers of this tech firm, specializing in AI medical diagnostics. She had stepped down to be Branden's wife, a decision that now tasted like ash in her mouth.

She walked through the familiar corridors. The sterile, efficient environment was a stark contrast to the toxic drama of the Cox family.

She knocked on the door of Eleanor Fletcher, the Director of Operations.

Eleanor looked up, surprise registering on her face. "Hannah? What a surprise. Please, sit."

Hannah handed over a crisp, white envelope. "I'm officially stepping back from my non-executive duties on the board, Eleanor. I'll be transferring my voting rights temporarily."

Eleanor opened the letter, her frown deepening. "Hannah, your initial algorithms are still the backbone of our diagnostic software, and as a founding shareholder, your voice is irreplaceable. Why are you completely cutting ties? Is this because of Branden?"

"It's for health reasons, Eleanor," Hannah said softly. She didn't elaborate. "I need to take a step back and rest."

Eleanor sighed, signing the paperwork. "Your door here is always open, Hannah. You are a rare talent. Don't let the domestic life bury you."

"Thank you," Hannah said, feeling a genuine pang of gratitude.

She walked out of the office and headed toward the elevators. Just as the doors were about to close, a hand shot out, stopping them.

Cameron Reid stepped in. He was Branden's executive assistant, a man who mirrored his boss's arrogance.

"Well, if it isn't Mrs. Cox," Cameron sneered, looking her up and down. "What brings you to the office? Coming to check up on Branden? You know he hates when you act clingy."

Hannah's stomach cramped. She pressed her hand against her abdomen, forcing her breathing to remain steady.

"I came to finalize my board leave, Cameron," Hannah said coldly. "And from now on, address me as Ms. Compton."

Cameron blinked, then let out a barking laugh. "Board leave? Throwing another tantrum for attention? Does Branden even know you're playing this game?"

Hannah didn't look at him. She stared straight at the elevator doors. "That is none of your business."

The doors opened at the lobby. Hannah walked out, leaving Cameron staring after her, a mocking smirk on his face. He thought she was just a desperate housewife crying for attention.

Back in her car, Hannah opened her notebook. She crossed out Secure financial compensation. She put a checkmark next to Finalize divorce paperwork.

She wrote: Countdown to Freedom: 30 Days.

Her phone buzzed in the cup holder. It was a text from her cousin, Julian Frye.

Hey Hannah. My friend Aurelio is hosting a private dinner tonight. Come with me? It's been too long since you got out of that house.

Hannah stared at the screen. She was exhausted, her body aching from the tumor and the stress. But she needed to rebuild her network. She needed to remember who she was before Branden Cox.

Okay, she typed back. What time and where?

When Hannah returned to the Cox Mansion, the house was eerily quiet. Peggy McCoy, the older housekeeper who had always been kind to her, was dusting the hallway.

Peggy noticed Hannah's pale complexion. "Mrs. Cox, are you feeling unwell? You barely touched your dinner last night."

"Please, call me Hannah, Peggy," she said gently. "I'm fine. Just a little tired. Actually... I'll be moving out soon."

Peggy's eyes widened in distress. She wrung her dusting cloth in her hands. "Moving out? Oh, my dear... I'm so sorry." Peggy knew how Branden treated her. She knew about the late nights and the perfume.

"Don't be," Hannah smiled, a genuine, tired smile. "It's for the best."

Hannah walked upstairs to the guest room. She pulled out a suitcase and began packing. She purposefully left behind every expensive dress, every diamond necklace, and every designer bag Branden had ever bought her. She only packed the clothes she had bought with her own money.

She looked at the empty closet. For the first time in three years, she felt a sliver of anticipation for the future.

She sat on the edge of the bed and opened her laptop. She drafted an email to Byron Erickson, the CEO of Vexel Dynamics and her former mentor.

Byron, I am officially stepping away from my current obligations. Is there still room for me on the new AI diagnostic project we discussed last year?

She hit send. Less than two minutes later, her inbox chimed.

Hannah! Byron's reply read. We have been waiting for you. The project just got greenlit. We desperately need your algorithms. Let's meet.

Hannah closed the laptop. Her stomach gave a sharp, agonizing throb. She doubled over, gasping for air, her fingers digging into the mattress. She waited for the pain to pass, her forehead slick with sweat.

When the agony finally subsided to a dull ache, she sat up. She looked out the window at the setting sun.

"Goodbye, Branden," she whispered to the empty room.
