Chapter 3

Jackson stood at the floor-to-ceiling window, his back to the chaos in the conference room. Below him, the traffic of Manhattan flowed like a silent, indifferent river. He had ripped his tie loose, the silk hanging askew, a rare crack in his impeccable facade.

The heavy glass door swung open. Elias Yates hurried to his side, his footsteps quick and anxious. He held out a tablet.

The screen displayed a complex web of bouncing nodes and firewalls, a digital map of a ghost's journey. A single red dot pulsed erratically.

"Sir, they're using a multi-layered dark web encryption," Elias reported, his voice tight. "Our team can't get a precise location. The best they can do is narrow it down to a twenty-block radius on the Upper East Side."

Jackson snatched the tablet from his hands. His finger stabbed at the red circle on the screen, a territory of wealth and privilege that now harbored his enemy.

"All resources," he commanded, his voice a low, dangerous growl. "I don't care if you have to knock on every door. I want the person who did this dragged out into the street."

Miles away, Kennedy glanced at the clock on the wall. She shrugged on her trench coat, the familiar weight a small comfort.

She navigated the building's underground garage and pulled her rented black sedan out into the city's afternoon traffic.

The car moved through the congested streets, a slow, frustrating crawl, finally coming to a stop in front of an expensive international private school.

She got out and stood under the shade of a large plane tree, her eyes scanning the flood of uniformed children pouring out of the main gates.

Then she saw them. Aiden, his black backpack looking too big for his small frame, holding the hand of his sister, Ava, who was dressed in a plaid skirt.

Ava spotted her first. She let go of her brother's hand and launched herself at Kennedy, a tiny, giggling cannonball of affection, wrapping her arms around her mother's leg.

Kennedy smiled, the tension in her shoulders easing for the first time all day. She bent down, ruffled Ava's hair, and took Aiden's heavy backpack from him.

They walked back to the car. Kennedy opened the back door, watching as the twins clambered into their booster seats.

She settled back into the driver's seat. As she reached for the ignition, a frantic movement in the rearview mirror caught her eye.

It was Aiden. His face was pale, his expression tight with a tension that didn't belong on a five-year-old. He was furiously tapping at the screen of a custom-made watch on his wrist.

A cold premonition washed over Kennedy. She turned in her seat, her hand shooting out and closing around his small wrist.

"What is that?" she asked, her voice sharp.

Aiden tried to pull away, but her grip was like steel. She pushed up his sleeve, revealing the miniature smart device.

The screen was flashing a single, terrifying message in red: ANTI-TRACKING PROTOCOL FAILURE. BRUTE FORCE ATTACK DETECTED.

The blood drained from Kennedy's face. Her hand, moving on its own, shot to his backpack on the seat between them. She ripped open the zipper and pulled out his ultra-thin laptop.

She flipped it open.

The screen displayed the internal network architecture of Clements Global. In the corner, minimized but still visible, was the source code for a cartoon pig.

The world tilted on its axis. Kennedy felt the air leave her lungs, her fingers gripping the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles turned white. All the blood in her body seemed to rush to her head, making her dizzy.

She turned to her son, her voice a choked whisper, laced with a terror she hadn't felt in five years.

"Aiden. What did you do? Do you have any idea who you just provoked?"

Aiden looked up at her, his lower lip trembling, but his eyes were defiant. "He hurt you, Mommy. He's a bad man. I just wanted to teach him a lesson."

Ava, sensing the sudden, terrifying shift in the atmosphere, shrank back in her seat. Her big eyes filled with tears as she clutched her seatbelt.

The word 'bad man' pierced Kennedy's heart, a painful echo of a past she had fought so hard to escape. The humiliation, the fear, the cold command to "get rid of it"-it all came rushing back.

She closed her eyes, taking a single, shuddering breath. Calm. She had to be calm.

She snapped the laptop shut and shoved it back into the bag.

Without another word, she slammed the car into gear and peeled away from the curb, the tires squealing in protest.

Her eyes darted frantically to the rearview mirror, checking for any sign of a tail. She fumbled in her purse for her phone, her hands shaking.

She speed-dialed Anjelica.

The moment her friend picked up, Kennedy's voice was a low, urgent hiss. "It's happening. He's found me. We have a problem."

The car took a sharp, sudden right turn, diving into a narrow one-way street, trying to disappear into the labyrinth of the city.
