Chapter 4

From that day on, the family and I ran like two separate rivers that never touched. Everyone acted as if I wasn't there.

If anything, it made my life easier. When I came home, there was no pile of dishes waiting for me to wash. I only had to take care of myself.

Without me folded into it, the house was less harmonious than before.

One day my mother sprained her wrist. Out of habit, she left the dishes on the table.

That was how it always went. Someone who couldn't stand the sight of it would clean up, and that someone had always been me.

I used to feel for her. I kept thinking that every extra chore I took was one less for her to do.

But over time, she started treating those chores as simply mine by right.

So this time I did what all of them did. I acted like I hadn't seen.

That load of dishes sat in the sink from the night before all the way to noon the next day.

Adam finally couldn't take it. He turned to our mother and said, "Mom, can't you wash them sooner? The kitchen smells."

She held her medicated-taped wrist and opened her mouth, then said nothing.

In the end she went, sheepishly, and washed them all.

And my father came to find me at last, on the first day after my summer job ended.

In our house he had always been the stern head of the family. This was the first time he had ever bent first to break the ice in a fight with his children.

Something rigid in me began, faintly, to loosen.

My tone wasn't so cold either. I only asked, calmly, "Is something wrong?"

He pinched the space between his brows. "You made ten thousand from two months of summer work, didn't you? Times are hard right now, and what your brother and your older sister want is pretty expensive. Hand that money over first. Consider it a loan from your dad."

In that instant I felt like I'd dropped into a pit of ice.

I laughed, suddenly. So the budget for the graduation gifts was ten thousand.

Not because my parents had set aside ten thousand. Because I had earned ten thousand.

When I spoke again, my voice came out rough. "Didn't you tell me I'd have to figure out my own living expenses in college?"

His eyes went blank for a second, as if he'd only just remembered. "Oh, didn't you enroll at the college near home? You'll be living at home, so you won't need a living allowance. From now on the family will remember to save you food."

Save you food. Those words drove straight into the sore place in me. My eyes burned, frighteningly hot, and the next moment the tears fell.

His face darkened at once. "Fine. Keep your money. When we actually need our own son, there's really no counting on you."

With that he turned and walked away.

He didn't ask whether twelve-hour workdays had worn me out.

He didn't care why, all these days, I hadn't been eating at home.

Ignoring me the same as always, and still wanting me to give everything to this family.

That night I left no note for anyone, and said nothing to anyone.

I only picked up one very light suitcase and walked out the door, off to a life that belonged to me.

There I would never have to eat anyone's leftovers again, or clean up after anyone's table.

This wasn't running off in a fit of temper. After eighteen years of being ignored, I had finally found my way back to myself.

The first day after I left, the house was as calm as ever.

Only, now and then, my mother would sit holding her still-unhealed wrist, staring at nothing.

The second day after I left, Adam noticed something was off and brought me up at the table on his own.

"Where's my second brother? How come I haven't seen him lately?"

Before my mother could answer, my father spoke first. "Eat. He can do whatever the hell he wants."

My mother started to say something a few times, then in the end just lowered her head and picked at the rice in her bowl.

And when the day of my freshman check-in finally came around, my mother seemed to find her reason to break the ice.

For once she lowered herself, opened my door, and came to make peace with me on her own.

"You've thrown your little tantrum long enough now, haven't you?"

She pushed the door open, and the moment she took in the empty room, the color drained from her face. She screamed.
