Chapter 3

Looking at the smug look on my mother-in-law's face, my mother and I looked at each other, both of us with confusion in our eyes, wondering what the so-called evidence my mother-in-law was talking about was.

“Ms. Day, please take a look at this first.”

The police frowned and showed me a screenshot, which clearly showed that the balance in the card was indeed 4 dollars.

What is going on?

Could it be that someone really touched this card?

Before I could explain, my mother-in-law sat down on the ground, slapping her hands and crying.

“Everyone, come and take a look. This is the life savings of my husband and I. We spent it all on marrying Leta and now she won't acknowledge it.

“My husband is lying in bed. At worst, we can just not get married. Just return the money and let my husband get treatment.

“My poor son, how could you be so foolish as to be fooled by this vixen?!”

Fredric's face was also filled with tears as he helped his mother to stand up. “Mom, please stop talking. I was wrong.”

The two of them sang the same tune and wanted to put the blame on me.

My mother nervously pulled my hand, afraid that I would really be accused of this crime.

I smiled at her soothingly and replied firmly, “Comrade police, a picture cannot be counted as evidence. I can edit a screenshot like this to show any balance I want. If you really want to know how much money was originally in this card, you should check the bank statement.”

Before the police said anything, Fredric had a humiliated expression on his face and looked at me with great sorrow. “Enough! Leta, is money really more important than me in your eyes?

“Even if you check the bank records, you will only find that I gave you 40,000 dollars as a betrothal gift.

“Leta, I always thought you were a very good girl. If you really made a mistake because of momentary confusion, it doesn't matter.

“As long as you are willing to return the money, I can forgive you.” He said this with such sincerity, as if I had really done something to let him down.

I was almost amused by this person's shamelessness. There was no point in talking if he did not agree with me.

I ignored his shouting and urged the police to check the bank transaction records. After all, I could not wait to see this shameless mother and son get slapped in the face.

When the bank transaction records were retrieved, I was dumbfounded.

The first income on this card was actually 40,000 dollars. However, after a few days, most of the money was transferred away, leaving only a ridiculous 4 dollars.

What was going on?

Did I really wrongly accuse Fredric?

But whether in the previous life or this life, I could be sure that I had never seen the 40,000 dollars, let alone taken the money out.

“Oh! What else do you have to say now?”

Seeing that the situation was in her favor, Fredric’s mother immediately jumped up and down, showing off her ability as a villain to the fullest.

She waved the transaction record exaggeratedly, wishing she could project it onto the big screen for every guest to see.

“My son really gave her 40,000 dollars as a betrothal gift, but this little bitch just refused to admit it. Now she's been slapped in the face!

“Everyone has seen it. She is acting in concert with her mother to defraud me of my life-saving money. She even had the nerve to call the police. She is really the thief crying thief!

“I checked online and found that the law supports the man in recovering the betrothal gift. There have been cases in which the woman was sentenced for refusing to return the money. Leta, you'd better return the money right now, or we'll send you to jail now!”
