Chapter 4

"Give me the routing key, Arthur," I ordered, balancing the heavy silver laptop on my thighs.

"You belong in a hospital bed, Evelyn, not a wheelchair." His voice crackled through the speaker of my burner phone resting on the metal desk.

"I am in a hospital bed. I just refused to stay under the covers. Read me the sequence."

The leather seat of the chair creaked as I shifted my weight. The medical binder wrapped tightly around my ribs dug into my skin, a sharp reminder of the ambulance ride. I ignored the sting and rested my fingers on the keyboard.

"Four-nine-alpha-tango," Arthur recited, his tone tight with disapproval. "Are you sure the backdoor still exists? The IT department overhauls the security grid every six months."

"I wrote the source code fifteen years ago in our garage," I replied, typing the sequence. "I embedded the admin portal into the foundational architecture. To remove it, they would have to delete the entire operating system and start from scratch. David never bothered to learn how the backend operates. He just liked spending the profits."

The screen flashed black, then green. The company administrator portal loaded instantly, bypassing the corporate two-factor authentication.

"I am in," I told him.

"Do you see the main ledger?"

"I see more than that. He is logged in right now."

"At two in the morning?" Arthur asked.

"He is a busy man. He has a mistress to fund." I watched the blinking cursor on the live dashboard. "He is in the emergency reserve accounts."

"He is liquidating the contingency fund," I said, leaning closer to the glowing monitor. "Seven point four million dollars. He is moving it all into a Cayman routing number."

"Let me run that number." Keys clacked on Arthur's end of the line. "That is the Vanguard Trust. Monica's holding company."

"If he empties the reserves, the company defaults on payroll by Monday morning."

"He doesn't care about payroll," Arthur pointed out. "He plans to bankrupt the original infrastructure, blame the collapse on your sudden death, and rebuild the assets under her new title."

A dry, sharp laugh escaped my throat. The sound jarred my chest, sending a spasm of pain through my collarbone.

"What is so funny?" Arthur demanded.

"He forgot who actually built this empire." I cracked my knuckles, the sound loud in the sterile room. "He thinks he can just strip the copper wire and burn the house down."

"You need to log out, Evelyn. If his IT department tracks your IP address, they will know you are alive."

"The IT director is a moron David hired because they play golf together," I countered. "He doesn't even know this hidden directory exists. He spends his days resetting passwords for the marketing team."

I clicked on the active transfer window. David's authorization code sat at the bottom, verifying the wire to Monica's account.

"Arthur, how long does an international corporate wire take to clear the final compliance check?"

"Ten hours. The clearing house opens at noon."

"Perfect."

I opened the command terminal. Lines of code reflected in my glasses as I typed a new override protocol.

"What are you doing?" Arthur asked, the rustle of papers stopping on his end.

"I am setting a freeze on that exact transaction." I hit the enter key. "The dashboard on his end will show a successful send. He will think the money is gone."

"But the clearing house will lock it."

"Exactly. At exactly twelve o'clock tomorrow, the transfer will bounce, and the funds will freeze in an administrative void. He won't have access to a single dime."

"Right in the middle of his press conference," Arthur noted, a hint of dark amusement slipping into his professional voice.

"He wants to play corporate raider," I said, my fingers flying across the keys. "Let him find out what happens when the vault is empty."

"Now for the real punishment," I murmured.

"Evelyn, do not destroy your own company."

"It stopped being my company the second he handed my mother's ring to his assistant."

I highlighted the three largest folders in the directory. The Japanese logistics firm. The German auto manufacturer. The Dubai shipping conglomerate.

"I am looking at the Tokyo, Munich, and Dubai contracts," I announced.

"That is forty percent of your annual revenue," Arthur warned. "If you touch those, the board of directors will panic."

"Let them." I pressed the delete key.

A prompt asked for confirmation. I typed my master password and hit enter again. The folders vanished.

"I just wiped the server backups," I said, watching the storage capacity jump back up. "The contracts are gone. The contact lists are gone. The pending invoices are gone."

Arthur let out a long exhale. "David is going to walk into a bloodbath tomorrow."

"I am not finished."

I navigated to the security settings. "I am setting a delayed alarm. The system will stay perfectly quiet until the wire transfer fails at noon. Then, every screen in the executive suite will lock down and flash a critical data loss warning."

"You are pulling the foundation out from under his feet while he smiles for the cameras."

"I spent twenty years building this life," I told him, my tone turning to ice. "I am going to make sure he doesn't get to keep a single brick."

A small blue notification box suddenly slid into the top right corner of my screen.

"Hold on," I said, stopping my hand over the mouse. "Someone just pushed a mass email to the entire corporate directory."

"Is it David? Did he spot you?"

"No." I narrowed my eyes at the sender name. "It is from Leo."

"Your son is sending corporate blasts at two in the morning?"

"He never uses his official company address." I clicked the envelope icon. "He only kept the email active for the employee discount on electronics."

The message loaded, filling the screen with a glossy, professionally designed graphic. Bold gold lettering stretched across a black background.

"What does it say?" Arthur pressed.

I stared at the image. The pain in my ribs completely vanished, replaced by a cold, hollow void in my stomach.

"It is an invitation," I answered, my voice devoid of any inflection.

"For what?"

"A charity event." I read the text aloud, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "You are cordially invited to the Maternal Memorial and Medical Foundation Launch Ceremony."

"A memorial?" Arthur sounded genuinely stunned. "It hasn't even been twenty-four hours."

"They are combining it with the annual gala tomorrow night." I scrolled down the page. "Leo is listed as the keynote speaker. He is asking all board members to bring their checkbooks to honor my tragic passing."

"They are using your death to solicit donations for Monica's new startup."

"Yes."

At the very bottom of the email, a high-resolution photograph sat centered above the RSVP button.

It was a picture of Leo standing between David and Monica. All three of them wore somber expressions, dressed in designer black clothing.

Monica's hand rested on Leo's shoulder.

The antique diamond ring caught the studio lighting, sparkling brightly against the dark fabric of my son's suit jacket.
