Chapter 2

The heavy metal doors of the ambulance slammed shut, cutting off the damp night air.

David and Leo had stepped out into the hospice parking lot. They left the paramedic alone in the back of the vehicle to finish the job. Through the small rectangular window, I watched my husband pat our son on the shoulder, already comforting the boy over a death that had not yet happened.

Grant, the paramedic, turned his attention back to me. His rubber-gloved hands reached for the main oxygen valve connected to my ventilator.

My fingers locked around his wrist.

Grant yelled, stumbling backward in absolute terror. His shoulder clipped the metal utility tray. Stainless steel instruments crashed onto the ribbed floorboards in a chaotic clatter, scattering syringes and gauze pads across the tight space.

I yanked my arm up, tearing the plastic oxygen mask and the feeding tube away from my face. The medical tape ripped my skin.

A violent coughing fit seized my chest. Blood and bile coated my tongue. I choked, gasping for the sterile air of the cabin, my shattered ribs screaming with every spasm.

"You are awake," Grant stammered, pressing his back against the storage cabinets. His eyes darted to the heart monitor, which now beeped in a rapid, frantic rhythm.

"The paper," I croaked. My throat felt like ground glass.

"Give me the DNR form." I extended a trembling hand.

He fumbled for the clipboard he had just placed on the counter. He held it out like a shield. I snatched it from his grip, my eyes scanning Leo’s messy signature at the bottom. The ink was still fresh. My own son had signed away my life for tuition money.

"Get back in the driver's seat," I commanded, my voice gaining a fraction of its normal steel.

"Ma'am, your husband is right outside." Grant pointed a shaking finger toward the rear doors. "I need to alert them."

"My husband just ordered my murder. And you agreed to execute it." I leaned forward, ignoring the searing pain in my torso. "Drive. Now. Take me to St. Jude Medical Center across the state line."

"I cannot just kidnap you."

"You were about to kill me. Kidnapping is a step down." I leveled a cold glare at him, refusing to blink. "If you open those doors and let them in, I will ensure you spend the rest of your life in federal prison for attempted homicide. Get behind the wheel."

Grant swallowed hard. He looked at the doors, then back at my unblinking stare. The authority in my tone left no room for negotiation.

He scrambled through the partition into the front cab and threw the vehicle into drive. The ambulance lurched forward. Tires screeched against the asphalt as we sped away from my family.

The drive took two agonizing hours. The tires finally hit the smooth pavement of St. Jude Medical Center's emergency bay just past midnight. The cross-state private facility operated with absolute discretion, catering to clients who valued secrecy over standard protocol.

"I need a phone," I told the triage doctor, swatting away a syringe filled with pain medication. "Right now."

"Bring me a phone, or I walk out of here."

A young nurse quickly handed me her personal cell. I punched in a number I had memorized a decade ago, praying the private line still worked.

"Pendleton Legal," a crisp voice answered on the second ring.

"Arthur. It is Evelyn."

"I am calling the authorities immediately." The sound of a chair scraping against a hardwood floor echoed through the receiver. "I will have the police meet you at the hospital."

"No. Stop right there." I gripped the plastic phone case. "I need you to activate Policy Number 9928."

Papers rustled in the background. "The ten-million-dollar medical contingency? Evelyn, you bought that ten years ago. If I trigger this, it bypasses your entire current estate."

"That is the point," I said, watching a nurse connect a new, clean IV to my bruised arm. "I want my legal identity frozen immediately. No one gets access to my accounts. Not David. Not Leo."

"Freezing your assets is simple enough," Arthur countered, pacing on his end of the line. "But David holds your medical proxy. If he finds out you are alive, he will challenge the freeze in court. He will claim you are not mentally competent."

"He will not find out." I stared at the flat-screen TV mounted in the corner of the private ER suite. The local news channel played on mute. "I need you to forge my cremation records."

"I have ten million dollars in a blind trust that says you can make it happen." I leaned back against the crisp hospital pillows. "David signed a DNR. As far as the state is concerned, I flatlined in that ambulance. Buy a body if you have to. Bribe a mortician. I want an urn delivered to my husband by the end of the week."

"Evelyn, this is madness. Just have him arrested."

"And prove what?" I asked, my grip tightening on the phone. "He has legal proxy. He will claim he was following medical advice. The doctors said I was vegetative. He will walk away clean, and I will be tied up in litigation for years while he drains my accounts to fund his mistress."

On the television, the news anchor gave way to a live press conference.

"This is a difficult time for our family," David’s voice filled the hospital room.

Beside him stood Monica. She wore a tailored white dress, her hand resting gently on David’s forearm. She looked solemn, playing the part of the grieving assistant perfectly. Her fingers stroked his sleeve in a way that screamed ownership.

"My wife, Evelyn, built an incredible foundation," David told the flashing cameras. His expression held a flawless mask of sorrow. "But in light of her tragic accident, we must look to the future. Effective immediately, I am restructuring Sterling Technology."

My jaw clenched. Sterling Technology was my company. I built it from a cramped garage office while David was out losing money on failed real estate ventures.

"Monica will be stepping up as the new Vice President of Operations," David continued, flashing a brave, tragic smile to the reporters. "Together, we will carry Evelyn’s legacy forward."

Monica leaned into the microphone. "Evelyn was a mentor to me. I will not let her down."

I scoffed. The sound scraped my raw throat. They were not even waiting for my body to go cold. They were dividing my empire on live television while my son planned his next spending spree.

"Evelyn?" Arthur’s voice called out from the phone. "Are you watching the broadcast?"

"I am."

"If I file these cremation papers, there is no undoing this," Arthur warned. The clicking of his keyboard echoed through the receiver. "You will lose your name. Your company. Your marriage. Everything you spent the last twenty years building."

"You sure you want to erase the existence of Evelyn Vance?" Arthur asked.

"She already died in the ambulance."
