The Substitute Heiress Leaves For Good

Chapter 2

Eleonore sat on the living room sofa all night, watching the city outside slowly be swallowed by the gray light of dawn. She didn't sleep. She didn't cry. She just sat there, like an ice sculpture, letting time tick away.

The sound of the key turning in the lock was unusually loud in the silent apartment.

Preston stumbled in, his tie loose, his hair disheveled. A stale stench of alcohol mingled with a cloying sweetness of perfume. The moment he saw her, he stopped abruptly, a flicker of surprise and guilt crossing his face.

He tried to brush it off with a familiar, charming smile, as if nothing had happened.

His voice was low, a soothing murmur. "Sorry, they went a little overboard last night. I got caught up and couldn't look after you."

Eleonore shifted slightly, making his embrace miss its mark. It was a subtle, almost imperceptible movement, yet as resolute as a door slamming shut.

This was nothing like the way she used to throw herself into his arms the moment she saw him.

There was something cold, something alien about her now.

Preston's arms hung frozen in midair. He looked embarrassed and confused. He probably thought she was just angry because he'd disappeared from the party.

She looked at him, her gaze flat and empty. "You smell like jasmine," she stated — not a question, but a fact. "I don't wear jasmine perfume."

A flicker of panic shot through his eyes, quickly concealed. "Oh, that's probably from Isabelle. You know how she loves to hug everyone."

A bitter, silent mockery echoed through Eleonore's mind. Isabelle Beaumont, the party's hostess, was notoriously allergic to jasmine — an old joke in their circle. His lie wasn't just a lie; it was lazy, careless, and so certain she wouldn't call him out on it.

And really — what would it change if she did?

Nothing. It would only humiliate her further.

She didn't expose him. There was no point. "Go take a shower," she said, her tone clipped and cold.

Preston seemed relieved. He mistook her coldness for a mere bad mood, an argument he could smooth over later with his charm.

"Alright, alright," he said, and disappeared into the bedroom.

The shower came on, water rhythmically beating against the tiles with a steady hiss. On the nightstand, his phone lit up.

Eleonore's gaze was pulled toward it. From across the room, she could read the message preview on the lock screen. It was from Vanessa Cole.

"That night was amazing. I miss you so much, P."

Right there. The final, brutal confirmation. The last nail hammered into the coffin of their relationship. She walked into the bedroom and picked up his phone. She didn't try to unlock it. She just stood there, holding that cold, irrefutable piece of evidence in her hand, those words searing into her retinas.

The water stopped. A few minutes later, Preston emerged from the bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist. The moment he saw Eleonore holding his phone, he froze, his face draining to a ghastly white.

He lunged forward and snatched the phone from her hand. "What are you doing? You know I hate it when people touch my phone." His voice was sharp, defensive.

Eleonore slowly raised her eyes to meet his. There was no anger in them, no tears — only a deep, weary emptiness, the kind that seemed to unsettle him. "I didn't touch it," she said quietly. "The screen lit up on its own."

He glanced at the screen, his thumb frantically swiping to delete messages. Then he turned to her, guilt curdling into aggression. "You're always so paranoid. Is this because I left early last night? I told you, I was with the guys."

She didn't argue. She didn't raise her voice. She simply turned and walked toward the walk-in closet. Her silence was more lethal than any accusation.

As if on cue, his phone rang. The screen lit up again. The caller ID displayed only a single letter: "V."

Preston's eyes darted from his phone to Eleonore's retreating figure. He hesitated for a beat, then answered the call, turning his back to her and speaking in a low voice as he walked toward the window.

Eleonore stood motionless beside the open closet door. Every word in his deep, gentle voice was perfectly audible to her.

"I know... I'll be there soon... Let me take care of things here first."

He hung up and turned to face her, his expression a mask of barely restrained patience. He dressed quickly, pulling on a clean shirt, his movements stiff.

"Vanessa's plane just landed," he said, awkwardly fastening his cufflinks, not meeting her eyes. "Her apartment isn't ready yet. I have to go pick her up and help her get settled into a hotel."

It wasn't a request for permission. It was a notification. He was informing her of his schedule, as if speaking to a roommate.

Though it was perfectly obvious they'd already seen each other the night before.

And had a very thorough exchange.

Eleonore leaned against the doorframe, watching him. Her voice was soft, barely more than a whisper. "Not coming back tonight?"

His hand paused on his tie. He finally met her eyes in the mirror, then looked away just as quickly. "Probably not. She's been through a lot. I need to be by her side."

He grabbed his wallet and car keys from the dressing table, brushing past her without another word, like a man fleeing a fire.

The front door clicked shut behind him.

In the sudden, deafening silence, Eleonore's last shred of composure crumbled — not into tears, but into something colder, a desolate, aching stillness. It was over. Truly, irrevocably, over.

She took out her phone, her fingers moving with a newfound purpose. She found a number she'd saved months ago, under a name that was formal and distant. A name that now represented her future.

Ford Trevino.

She composed a text message, her wording precise and professional.

"Mr. Trevino, this is Eleonore Sanford. I have settled my personal affairs in New York. I will return to Boston next week to discuss the specifics of our engagement."

She read it over once, then hit send.

A profound wave of relief washed over her, so intense it nearly made her dizzy. The false hope of the past three years, the crushing weight of being a substitute — it all lifted from her shoulders. She hadn't been cast aside.

She had simply — set herself free.
