Chapter 5

I pinched the edges of the white cardstock. The black ink smeared slightly at the tail of the 'y', still fresh from whatever pen Victor had used to write the threat.

"Specify," I demanded, holding the card under the harsh glare of the overhead light. "What exactly is more than the money, Damian?"

Damian stared at the severed memory card resting on the metal floor. He did not move to pick it up.

"He ran a background check on my sister's medical debt," Damian said, his voice stripped of the smooth confidence he wore at the gallery. "Then he traced Lena Ortiz."

Nora stepped closer to the desk, her lawyer instincts flaring. "Who is Lena Ortiz?"

"She holds the physical evidence from a federal case I worked three years ago," Damian answered, keeping his eyes on me. "I buried her file to keep her safe. If Victor leaks her address to the men looking for her, they will kill her."

He was protecting someone. Victor had found the pressure point and pressed down hard.

I laid the business card flat on the dented metal desk. I raised my phone, snapped a clear photograph of the handwritten threat, and texted the image to Nora's secure server.

"We are partners in evidence gathering, Damian," I told him, dropping my phone back into my bag. "Nothing else. I am here for the files. I am not here to hear your confession."

Damian nodded once. He reached into his suit jacket, pulled out his own phone, and tapped in his passcode. He slid the unlocked device across the desk until it hit my knuckles.

"Fifty-two messages," Damian said. "Every directive he gave me since the gallery opening."

I picked up the device. The screen brightness stung my eyes in the dim office.

I scrolled to the top of the message thread. The contact name was simply a single period.

Oct 12, 9:15 PM: Spill the drink.

Oct 12, 9:18 PM: Offer the gray handkerchief.

Oct 12, 9:25 PM: Tell her she looks tired. Make her defend her work.

Oct 12, 9:40 PM: Move in at forty seconds of the slow dance.

My thumb hovered over the glass. Every accidental brush of his shoulder, every shared glance across the crowded room, every word that made me feel seen for the first time in two years—all of it was numbered. Cataloged. Orchestrated by my husband.

I scrolled down to the final messages.

Oct 12, 10:12 PM: Do not kiss unless she initiates.

The glass screen turned into a block of ice against my palm. The timestamp stared back at me. Ten-twelve. The exact minute I stood on the windy terrace and pulled his collar down.

I hated Victor for typing it.

I hated myself because my skin still remembered the exact weight of Damian's hands hovering over my waist, refusing to press down until I closed the distance.

Damian watched my face. "I should have walked away at the first text."

"Should have is not evidence," I said, tossing his phone back onto the desk. "And right now, this is not an absolution."

"There is a backup," Damian said, catching the phone. "A physical flash drive with the cloud keys."

"Where?" Nora asked, pulling out her notepad.

"Morgan House. The executive floor lockers." Damian checked his watch. "The passcode is Victor's contract tail number. One-eight-zero-zero-zero-zero."

"Victor knows you are moving," Nora warned, turning to me. "He will anticipate the hotel. You need to let me send a courier."

"A courier cannot verify the contents," I said, walking toward the door. "I am going."

The Morgan House lobby smelled of white lilies and industrial floor wax. The late-night quiet amplified the sound of our shoes against the marble tiles.

A waiter in a maroon vest paused near the brass luggage carts. He held a silver tray of empty champagne flutes. His eyes darted from my face to Damian's shoulder, then back to my face.

"Wait," the waiter said, reaching into his pocket for his phone. "Are you the two from the terrace—"

Damian shifted his weight instantly. He stepped directly into the waiter's line of sight, his broad shoulders completely blocking me from the man's view.

I sidestepped Damian's arm, refusing the shelter.

"Do not play my protector," I told Damian, my tone low and sharp. "Walk."

We bypassed the main desk and headed straight for the private corridors. The executive locker bay was lined with dark walnut doors and gold-plated keypads.

Damian stopped at locker number four. He punched the six digits into the keypad.

The lock clicked green. The heavy wood door swung open.

The interior was empty, except for a clear plastic tray resting on the bottom shelf.

In the tray sat a silver elevator access card and a heavy stock reservation pass.

I picked up the pass. The cursive font was neatly printed. Mara Ellison. Executive Lounge. 1:45 a.m.

"She took the drive," Damian said, scanning the empty shelf.

"She wants us to follow her," I corrected.

I grabbed the silver elevator card and turned toward the private lift at the end of the hall.

We stepped into the executive car. The brass doors slid shut, sealing us inside the mirrored box. I swiped the silver card against the reader and pressed the button for the top floor.

The mechanical hum of the cables vibrated through the floorboards.

The digital display above the door ticked past fourteen. Fifteen. Sixteen.

At eighteen, the car jerked violently, then stopped between floors before the doors could open.

My knees buckled slightly as the floor dropped an inch. The overhead halogens snapped off, plunging the small space into absolute, suffocating blackness.

The only illumination came from the emergency call button, flashing a weak, rhythmic red.

"I am in the back left corner," Damian stated immediately.

His voice cut through the dark.

"Both hands are flat against the steel paneling," he added.

"Keep talking," I ordered.

I needed the sound of his voice to map the narrow space. I needed to ensure the gap between us remained absolute. I despised the fact that his low, steady tone kept my pulse from racing.

"The emergency brake engaged," Damian said, his voice projecting from the exact spot he claimed. "This is not a mechanical failure. Someone cut the power from the control room."

A sharp burst of static hissed from the speaker above the door.

The frequency whined, adjusting to a live audio feed. The red emergency light pulsed twice, casting a brief, bloody glow over Damian's rigid jaw.

Victor's voice crackled through the speaker, thick with a smiling, arrogant ease.

"Good. Now make her need you."
