Chapter 2

"Make her sign. Now."

Victor's recorded voice rasped through the tiny speaker, thin and metallic.

The lounge went dead silent.

I pulled the earpiece away from my ear and dropped it squarely onto the center of the property waiver. It landed with a dull plastic click right over my typed name.

"Do you invoice my breathing too, Victor?" I asked. "Or is that already filed under standard family liquidity?"

Victor lunged across the glass coffee table, his hand shooting out for the receiver.

I yanked my iPhone from my clutch and snapped three clear photos before his fingers touched the glass. The camera flashed, capturing the black receiver resting over the signature line of the property waiver.

"Give me that phone," Victor snarled, his knuckles slamming onto the table.

"Don't sign," Damian said.

The words came from the shadows near the door. His voice was low, rough, and completely unprompted. It was the first time tonight he had spoken without a script buzzing in his ear.

I did not smile. I did not thank him. I turned my head and fixed my eyes on his face.

"Which minute did you stop acting?" I asked. "Was it outside the Carlyle at two in the morning, or when you told me my dress was untouched?"

Damian's jaw hardened. His gaze dropped to the floor, refusing to meet mine.

Victor straightened his cuffs, letting out a dry, dismissive chuckle.

"Don't flatter yourself, Sloane," Victor said, smoothing his tie. "You think this is some grand tragedy? You are confusing boring loneliness with grounds for divorce."

"Loneliness?" I reached into my clutch, pulled out the stiff black cardstock I had kept folded behind my lawyer's retainer agreement, and threw it against his chest. It fluttered down onto the glossy photos. "Read it out loud."

Victor glanced down at the neat, looped handwriting.

"It is an assistant's note," he said, flicking it aside with his thumb. "So what?"

"It was your fifth-anniversary gift," I said. "Eighteen months ago. A black box containing a reservation for one and a card that said Client dinner, apologies from V.K. You did not even bother to sign your own name."

"And you think that entitles you to half my holdings?" Victor tapped the heavy paper of the waiver, his signet ring clicking against Section 11. "Look at the clause. Marital infidelity nullifies your redemption rights to the Lake Geneva cottage. It freezes the one-point-seven-million-dollar joint investment account immediately. You leave with whatever fits in the trunk of your car."

He spoke with the flat cadence of an executive reading quarterly losses to a bored boardroom.

"Sign it," Victor repeated, sliding the gold-nibbed pen across the glass toward my fingers. "Or the board gets the Carlyle shots before breakfast."

I picked up the pen.

The cold metal felt heavy between my fingers.

I hovered the nib directly over the signature line.

Victor's mouth curved upward, the smug satisfaction already settling behind his eyes.

I pressed the nib down hard into the blank margin beside Section 11.

In bold, jagged strokes, I wrote: Coercion with hired surveillance.

Victor's smile vanished. "You stupid bitch."

Damian took a step toward the table, his hand reaching out. "Sloane, listen to me—"

He was still clutching the gray handkerchief he had used to shield my dress.

Under the overhead halogen lamp, a tiny glint caught my eye at the reinforced hem. A microscopic black aperture, no larger than the head of a pin, was embedded in the corner stitching.

My stomach turned to pure ice.

"You recorded the whole thing," I whispered, stepping back until my spine hit the wood paneling. "From the second the wine spilled."

Damian froze. He looked down at the handkerchief in his grip, his throat working silently.

"How much?" I demanded, my voice cutting through the room like a blade. "Tell me the number, Damian. What is the going rate for engineering a woman's ruin?"

Damian kept his eyes on mine, his lips parted, but no sound came out.

"A hundred and eighty thousand," Victor answered smoothly, stepping between us. "Cheaper than a lawsuit. And far more effective."

A laugh broke from my chest—short, sharp, sounding like shattered glass against concrete.

"A hundred and eighty thousand," I repeated. "You paid him four months of my studio's operating budget to hold a napkin."

Damian placed the gray handkerchief flat on the glass table, right next to the eight photographs.

"The raw files are not only on your server, Kline," Damian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.

Victor snapped his head toward him, veins bulging along his neck. "Shut your mouth, Cross. You work for me."

"I worked for you until five minutes ago," Damian said.

Victor sneered, pulling his phone from his suit pocket. "Mara is waiting outside that door with the press list. I have an email drafted to every member of the museum board, every partner in the art fund, and the local news desk."

He angled the screen toward me.

The subject line was already filled in: Sloane Hart Conduct Issue.

Attached were four high-resolution files from the Carlyle garage and the terrace.

"The clock is running," Victor said, his thumb hovering over the screen. "Six o'clock sharp. You sign this waiver, or your reputation in this city is incinerated before sunrise."

I did not look at the waiver. I did not look at the pen.

I scooped my phone off the table and slid it back into my clutch, keeping the photo of the earpiece locked in my secure storage.

"Send it," I said, meeting his glare without blinking. "The second that email hits an inbox, my lawyer files a criminal complaint for unlawful electronic surveillance and extortion. Let us see how the board likes funding a felon."

I turned toward the exit.

Victor let out a vicious bark of laughter and pressed his thumb against the glass screen.

A green banner flashed across the top of his phone: Scheduled: 6:00 a.m.

"Have fun with your lawyer, Sloane," Victor said.

I reached for the brass handle of the lounge door.

A heavy arm slammed against the wood frame right above my head, blocking my path.

Damian stood over me, his shadow cutting off the light from the hallway.

"I can prove the photos were a setup," Damian said.
